Modified Active Site Coordination In A Clinical Mutant Of Sulfite Oxidase, Christian J. Doonan, Heather L. Wilson, K. V. Rajagopalan, Robert M. Garrett, Brian Bennett, Roger C. Prince, Graham N. George

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The molybdenum site of the Arginine 160 → Glutamine clinical mutant of the physiologically vital enzyme sulfite oxidase has been investigated by a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. We conclude that the mutant enzyme has a six-coordinate pseudo-octahedral active site with coordination of Glutamine Oε to molybdenum. This contrasts with the wild-type enzyme which is five-coordinate with approximately square-based pyramidal geometry. This difference in the structure of the molybdenum site explains many of the properties of the mutant enzyme which have previously been reported.

Reflecting On Teaching Practices Using Digital Video Representation In Teacher Education, C Paul Newhouse, Jenny Lane, Claire Brown Aug 2007

Reflecting On Teaching Practices Using Digital Video Representation In Teacher Education, C Paul Newhouse, Jenny Lane, Claire Brown

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on the perceptions of teacher education student of the value of using digital tools to analyse video-based information on the practice of teachers in classrooms. This strategy was employed to address a dilemma in providing sufficient exposure to real examples of good classroom teaching to link theory with practice. The use of video of teachers in action could augment their practicum experience in schools but this required efficient and effective access to appropriate video material. For this purpose, the use of digital tools in a system called LessonLab was successfully implemented in an introductory unit focussed on …

We present the result of a wide-field survey of globular clusters (GCs) in M31 covering a 3o x 3o field centered on M31.We have searched for GCs on CCD images taken with Washington CMT1 filters at the KPNO 0.9 m telescope using the following steps: (1) inspection of morphological parameters given by the SExtractor package such as stellarity, full width at half-maximum, and ellipticity; (2) consulting the spectral types and radial velocities obtained from spectra taken with the Hydra spectrograph at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope; and (3) visual inspection of the images of each object. We …

Testing Lorentz Symmetry With Gravity, Quentin G. Bailey Aug 2007

Testing Lorentz Symmetry With Gravity, Quentin G. Bailey

Publications

In this talk, results from the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) are discussed. The weak-field phenomenology of the resulting modified gravitational field equations is explored. The application of the results to a variety of modern gravity experiments, including lunar laser ranging, Gravity Probe B, binary pulsars, and Earth-laboratory tests, shows promising sensitivity to gravitational coefficients for Lorentz violation in the SME.

Cone Beam Computed Tomographic Simulation Of Panoramic Radiology : Third Molar Assessment And Mandibular Canal., Ryan L. Snyder Aug 2007

Cone Beam Computed Tomographic Simulation Of Panoramic Radiology : Third Molar Assessment And Mandibular Canal., Ryan L. Snyder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the research is to determine if cone beam computerized tomography reconstructed panoramic radiography viewed in two different focal trough shapes, and three different focal trough widths changes the ability to identify high risk radiologic signs associated with an intimate anatomic relationship between third molars and the Inferior Alveolar Nerve. The basic assumption of this research is that a customized focal trough shape with a wider focal trough width at the third molar region will produce more high risk radiologic signs present when there is a relation between the third molar and the Inferior Alveolar Canal. A retrospective …

Impact Of An Exotic Parasitoid On Plutella Xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Population Dynamics, Damage And Indigenous Natural Enemies In Kenya, B. Löhr, R. Gathu, C. Kariuki, J. Obiero, G. Gichini Aug 2007

Impact Of An Exotic Parasitoid On Plutella Xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Population Dynamics, Damage And Indigenous Natural Enemies In Kenya, B. Löhr, R. Gathu, C. Kariuki, J. Obiero, G. Gichini

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Diadegma semiclausum (Hellén) (Hymenoptera: lchneumonidae), an exotic diamondback moth parasitoid, was released in two pilot areas (Werugha in Coast Region and Tharuni in Central Province) in Kenya. Fifteen month before release, observations on the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus), and local natural enemy population dynamics and pest damage were initiated in both areas and continued for three years after release. The P. xylostella population was bimodal with higher records during dry seasons. At Werugha, the peak population of P. xylostella was 16.8 per plant (October 2001); at Tharuni it was 12.8 (February 2002). Populations at Werugha declined from three months …
