Decadal Variation Of The Southwest U.S. Summer Monsoon Circulation And Rainfall In A Regional Model, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng Jan 2007

Decadal Variation Of The Southwest U.S. Summer Monsoon Circulation And Rainfall In A Regional Model, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have identified several major causes for summer rainfall variations over the southwest United States, for example, land memory (i.e., relationships between antecedent winter season precipitation and snow cover anomalies and subsequent summer rainfall anomalies over the southwest United States; these anomalies are likely most important in the northwest United States, although antecedent anomalies in the southwest United States also may be important in determining summer rainfall variations) and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Pacific. Atmospheric responses to these “boundary forces” interact with moisture flows from the Gulf of Mexico and from the Gulf of California …

Damping Controllers For Power System Oscillations Using A Static Var Compensator, Sandhya R. Jetti Jan 2007

Damping Controllers For Power System Oscillations Using A Static Var Compensator, Sandhya R. Jetti

Masters Theses

"Damping of power system plays an important role in not only increasing the transmission capacity but also in stabilizing the power system, especially after critical faults. Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a shunt FACTS device which has capability of fast and continuous capacitive and inductive reactive power supply to the power system. SVCs are widely used for voltage stability but studies show that they are also effective in providing damping to the system. In this thesis, three types of SVC damping controllers are designed. The first damping controller is an optimal linear controller in which the parameters of a damping …

Florida Wireless Implantable Recording Electrodes (Fwire) For Brain Machine Interfaces, Rizwan Bashirullah, John G. Harris, Justin C. Sanchez, Toshikazu Nishida, Jose C. Principe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reviews on-going efforts towards the development of the Florida Wireless Implantable Recording Electrodes (FWIRE). The FWIRE microsystem platform is a fully implantable flexible substrate microelectrode array that employs state-of-the-art integrate-and-fire (IF) signal representation and wireless interface circuitry for recording neural activity from behaving rodents. The modular nature of the implantable neural recording electrode allows future enhancements to be seamlessly added to improve functionality including but not limited to rechargeability through inductive coupling, custom microelectrode arrays, higher capacity batteries, and more advanced integrated circuit technologies. This paper concentrates on custom integrated circuits such as neural interfacing amplifiers, baseband signal …

The Missing Theory Of Variable Selection In The Economic Analysis Of Tort Law, James M. Anderson Jan 2007

The Missing Theory Of Variable Selection In The Economic Analysis Of Tort Law, James M. Anderson

Utah Law Review

This Article raises an issue that has only been tangentially addressed in the economic literature on tort law: which accident inputs should a court examine when determining liability and which should it take as given? Economic theory yields no a priori answer to this question. Without an answer to this question, the economic analysis of tort law yields indeterminate prescriptions. This Article proposes an analytical framework-a continuum from long-run to short-run accident inputs-to help understand the problem. Many conventional doctrines of tort law map onto this continuum, and it helps make clear the tradeoffs a court faces in choosing tIle …

Method And Madness In Copyright Law, Dan L. Burk Jan 2007

Method And Madness In Copyright Law, Dan L. Burk

Utah Law Review

Copyright law is a source of nearly endless scholarly fascination because of the paradoxes, the absurdities, the contradictions in its doctrines. Lewis Carroll's White Queen had nothing on copyright law. Copyright asks us to accept far more than six impossible, almost nonsensical assertions as part of its standard doctrine. Copyright asks us to believe, for example, that creative works have an existence independent of their embodiment that corporations, rather than people, can author documents that computer code is a literary work, like poetry or novels that artists have a special propensity to bungle their business affairs. The list seems nearly …

Hierarchical Linear Modeling In Organizational Research: Longitudinal Data Outside The Context Of Growth Modeling, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Rindskopf Jan 2007

Hierarchical Linear Modeling In Organizational Research: Longitudinal Data Outside The Context Of Growth Modeling, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Rindskopf

Publications and Research

Organizational researchers, including those carrying out occupational stress research, often conduct longitudinal studies. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM; also known as multilevel modeling and random regression) can efficiently organize analyses of longitudinal data by including within- and between-person levels of analysis. A great deal of longitudinal research has been conducted in the context of growth studies in which change in the dependent variable is examined in relation to the passage of time. HLM can treat longitudinal data, including data outside the context of the growth study, as nested data, reducing the problem of censoring. Within-person equation coefficients can represent the impact …

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin Jan 2007

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Programs that process streams of information are commonly built by assembling reusable information-flow components. In some systems the components must be chosen from a pre-defined set of primitives; in others the programmer can create new custom components using a general-purpose programming language. Neither approach is ideal: restricting programmers to a set of primitive components limits the expressivity of the system, while allowing programmers to define new components in a general-purpose language makes it difficult or impossible to reason about the composite system. We advocate defining information-flow components in a domain-specific language (DSL) that enables us to infer the properties of …

Why Don’T People Use Refactoring Tools?, Andrew P. Black, Emerson Murphy-Hill Jan 2007

Why Don’T People Use Refactoring Tools?, Andrew P. Black, Emerson Murphy-Hill

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Tools that perform refactoring are currently under-utilized by programmers. As more advanced refactoring tools are designed, a great chasm widens between how the tools must be used and how programmers want to use them. In this position paper, we characterize the dominant process of refactoring, demonstrate that many research tools do not support this process, and initiate a call to action for designers of future refactoring tools.

Cache Coherence Protocol Verification Using Ωmega, Ki Yung Ahn Jan 2007

Cache Coherence Protocol Verification Using Ωmega, Ki Yung Ahn

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We verify some correctness properties of the DASH cache coherence protocol using Ωmega. Ωmega is a language with a rich type system featuring GADTs, type functions, and user-guided type checking rules. Cache coherence protocols have both safety properties and liveness properties. We show how to describe some of the safety properties of DASH cache coherence protocol in mega. Since liveness properties are not easily expressed by types, we investigate invariants sufficient to imply some of the liveness properties of concern, and assert those invariants as well in the type system of Ωmega. Using Ωmega, we can have both a working …

Protecting The Internet With Public Work, Ed Kaiser, Wu-Chang Feng Jan 2007

Protecting The Internet With Public Work, Ed Kaiser, Wu-Chang Feng

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Distributed denial-of-service attacks represent a growing problem for networked systems. To tackle this problem, this paper explores the addition of a public work function to the service advertisement mechanisms used by such systems. When under attack, services advertise this function along with their location information and clients must attach a solution to the function with subsequent requests. The function, which can be made specific to the source of traffic, is publicly verifiable, allowing arbitrary network devices at the edges of the network to quickly verify that subsequent communication from the source will be accepted by the destination. We describe a …

Vortices And Chaos In The Quantum Fluid, D. A. Wisniacki, E. R. Pujals, F. Borondo Jan 2007

Vortices And Chaos In The Quantum Fluid, D. A. Wisniacki, E. R. Pujals, F. Borondo

Publications and Research

The motion of a single vortex originates chaos in the quantum fluid defined in Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics. Here we analize this situation in a very simple case: one single vortex in a rectangular billiard.

Stochastic Comparisons Of Parallel Systems When Component Have Proportional Hazard Rates, Subhash C. Kochar, Maochao Xu Jan 2007

Stochastic Comparisons Of Parallel Systems When Component Have Proportional Hazard Rates, Subhash C. Kochar, Maochao Xu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let Χ1, … Χn be independent random variables with Χᵢ having survival function Fλᵢ, i=1, … , n, and let Y₁, … , Yn be a random sample with common population survival distribution Fλ, where λ = Σᵢ=₁nλᵢl n. Let Χn:n and Yn:n denote the lifetimes of the parallel systems consisting of these components, respectively. It is shown that Xn:n is greater than Yn:n in terms of likelihood ratio order. It is also proved that the sample range Χn:n - Χ₁:n is larger than Yn n:n - Y₁:n according to reverse hazard rate ordering. These two results …
