Linux And The Spacecraft Flight Software Environment , Edward Birrane, Kathryn Bechtold, Christopher Krupiarz, Andrew Harris, Alan Mick, Stephen Williams

Small Satellite Conference

Flight software development must evolve as the operational characteristics of spacecraft evolve. Flight development typically makes use of a monolithic architecture comprised of custom-built, tightly coupled software. This dense coupling precludes the development agility desired by small spacecraft software efforts. Specifically, mission requirements are becoming aligned with re-use centered, highly decoupled, distributed architectures otherwise popular in desktop and web development. To meet the engineering challenge of matching the needs of these missions, the software environment must be modernized and the software architecture decoupled. The use of Linux in a flight environment promises to fill this need while significantly lowering the …

Model-Based Anomaly Management For Small Spacecraft Missions, Christopher Kitts, Richard Rasay Aug 2007

Model-Based Anomaly Management For Small Spacecraft Missions, Christopher Kitts, Richard Rasay

Small Satellite Conference

Space missions produce value through the production of mission data products and services. In doing so, however, significant resources are expended in order to maintain system health and to manage anomalies as they occur. These tasks are costly in terms of the expertise, personnel, and time required to detect, diagnose and resolve problems. Our recent work in model-based reasoning (MBR) techniques has demonstrated the applicability of this technology to the small satellite domain. MBR uses fundamental design knowledge of a system in order to compute reasoning conjectures relating to the existence of symptoms, diagnosis estimates, and resolution control actions. In …

Distributed Plug-And-Play Software Architecture, Christopher Monaco, Mark Reid

Small Satellite Conference

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) developed a flight software system which has been used for multiple NASA missions. One fundamental component of this software system is a centralized command executive that has been successfully demonstrated on four ongoing missions: Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED), MErcury Surface Space ENvironment GEochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER), New Horizons, and most recently Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO). Through the development and operations of these missions, developers and operations personnel gained a significant amount of experience with this flight software system. This system provides all of the command capabilities required to …

A Database Centered Approach To Satellite Engineering Data Storage, Access, And Display, Patrick Cruce, Bryce Roberts, Manfred Bester, Timothy Quinn

Small Satellite Conference

Many of the tools available today for processing and displaying engineering telemetry data of small satellite missions are limited by a real-time software design. Data access is often accomplished via sequential (linear) search, and interfaces are constrained to snap screen shots or batch processing views. To promote greater accessibility and improve data retention, we have developed the Berkeley Trending and Plotting System (BTAPS). BTAPS is a general purpose software suite that provides a record of all spacecraft engineering data over the course of the mission via a MYSQL 5.0 database and includes an interface to generate multiple simultaneous time ordered …

Inference For Survival Curves With Informatively Coarsened Discrete Event-Time Data: Application To Alive, Michelle Shardell, Daniel O. Scharfstein, David Vlahov, Noya Galai

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In many prospective studies, including AIDS Link to the Intravenous Experience (ALIVE), researchers are interested in comparing event-time distributions (e.g.,for human immunodeficiency virus seroconversion) between a small number of groups (e.g., risk behavior categories). However, these comparisons are complicated by participants missing visits or attending visits off schedule and seroconverting during this absence. Such data are interval-censored, or more generally, coarsened. Most analysis procedures rely on the assumption of non-informative censoring, a special case of coarsening at random that may produce biased results if not valid. Our goal is to perform inference for estimated survival functions across a small number of …

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Small-scale (less than 15 km horizontal wavelength) wavelike structures known as ripples are a common occurrence in OH airglow images. Recent case studies attribute their origin to the presence of either convective or dynamical instabilities. However, little is known about their frequency of occurrence and period. The Maui-MALT Observatory, located at Mt. Haleakala, is instrumented with a Na wind/temperature lidar, which allows the determination of whether the atmosphere is dynamically or convectively unstable, and a fast OH airglow camera which takes images every 3 s with a sensitivity high enough to see the ripples. This study reports on 2 months …

Bose-Einstein correlations of charged and neutral kaons have been measured in e ± p deep inelastic scattering with an integrated luminosity of 121 pb -1 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The two-particle correlation function was studied as a function of the four-momentum difference of the kaon pairs, Q 12 = sqrt(- (p 1 - p 2) 2), assuming a Gaussian shape for the particle source. The values of the radius of the production volume, r, and of the correlation strength, λ, were obtained for both neutral and charged kaons. The radii for charged and neutral kaons are similar and …

Autonomous Proximity Operations Of Small Satellites With Minimum Numbers Of Actuators , Jason Hall, Marcello Romano Aug 2007

Autonomous Proximity Operations Of Small Satellites With Minimum Numbers Of Actuators , Jason Hall, Marcello Romano

Small Satellite Conference

A novel testbed is introduced to examine the problem of multiple spacecraft interacting in close proximity in a laboratory setting. This testbed enables validation of guidance, navigation and control (GNC) algorithms by combining six-degrees of freedom (DoF) computer simulation and three-degrees of freedom hardware-in-the-loop experimentation. The 3-DOF spacecraft simulator enables real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing of GNC algorithms by employing the principle of air-flotation along a flat floor to duplicate the frictionless and weightlessness inherent to orbital flight. This 3-DoF spacecraft simulator fuses sensor data from pseudo-GPS and a fiber-optic gyroscope in order to provide precise state estimation while employing a novel …

Orbit/Attitude Determination And Control For The Umr Sat Mission, Michael Dancer, Jason Searcy

Small Satellite Conference

As satellite missions become increasingly complex, a need for accurate determination and control systems using low cost hardware arises. This is especially true for university satellite programs such as the University of Missouri - Rolla satellite design team, or UMR SAT. With limited resources, mission success relies on creative and innovative hardware and software designs. This paper describes the development of control algorithms that will be used onboard the UMR SAT satellite pair. Using novel attitude and orbit control techniques and magnetometer-only attitude determination, the mission can be accomplished with low cost COTS hardware. The UMR developed θ-D controller will …

The Distributed Sensing Experiment (DSE) program demonstrates the technology of using micro satellites to perform target acquisition, tracking, and three-dimensional track development using a visible camera payload. DSE is a concept demonstration to show how micro satellites, working singly and as a group, can perform a large part of the missile defense function at a much lower cost than traditional systems. A key design parameter of the program is incorporating commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software to reduce risk and cost, while maintaining performance. Having completed a successful Critical Design Review, the program is currently in fabrication, integration, and test phase. …

Efficient Angular Dispersion Compensation In Holographic Generation Of Intense Ultrashort Paraxial Beam Modes, James Strohaber, C. Petersen, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal Aug 2007

Efficient Angular Dispersion Compensation In Holographic Generation Of Intense Ultrashort Paraxial Beam Modes, James Strohaber, C. Petersen, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

We experimentally demonstrate that small misalignments of the pulse stretcher or compressor of our chirped-pulse-amplification laser can precompensate for angular chirp when producing ultrashort paraxial beam modes with holographic gratings. Using this approach we can eliminate one of the two gratings needed in our 2f–2f setup [Mariyenko et al., Opt. Express 13, 7599 (2005)]. This allows for up to an order of magnitude more output power. We see our method as the next step in the production of intense exotic forms of ultrashort pulses, which can be used in the investigation of intense laser–matter interactions. In addition, …
