Information And Inventory In Distribution Channels, Rakesh Kumar Niraj Aug 2007

Information And Inventory In Distribution Channels, Rakesh Kumar Niraj

Faculty Scholarship

We examine the trade-offs between demand information and inventory in a distribution channel. While better demand information has a positive direct effect for the manufacturer in improving the efficiency of holding inventory in a channel, it can also have the strategic effect of increasing retail prices and limiting the extraction of retail profits. Having inventory in the channel can help the manufacturer to manage retail pricing behavior while better extracting retail surplus. Thus, even if the information system is perfectly reliable, the manufacturer might not always want to institute an information-enabled channel over a channel with inventory. We show this …

Cognitive Styles In Student Use, Perception, And Satisfaction With Online Learning, Glenn E. Cockerline Aug 2007

Cognitive Styles In Student Use, Perception, And Satisfaction With Online Learning, Glenn E. Cockerline

Theses and Dissertations

The current trend toward online learning significantly changes the paradigm for teaching and learning. While instructors structure and sequence how they teach in a traditional face-to-face classroom, the very nature of online learning shifts the locus of control from the instructor to the learner, as the student picks and chooses how and when they access the course, what aspects they dwell on, and for how long. As a result, a need exists to investigate how different students respond to the online interface. This study conducted at a small Canadian mid-western university was designed to investigate whether a relationship existed between …

Diffusive Compression Acceleration Of Energetic Particles With An Application To Shock Acceleration Near Injection Energies, Ming Zhang Aug 2007

Diffusive Compression Acceleration Of Energetic Particles With An Application To Shock Acceleration Near Injection Energies, Ming Zhang

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The behavior of energetic charged particles accelerated by a continuous plasma compression profile is explored in the framework of diffusion. At high enough energies, the accelerated particles have a power-law spectrum with a slope generally steeper than a shock spectrum with the same compression ratio. The spectral slope depends on the ratio of the diffusion coefficient to the product of the upstream plasma speed and the thickness of the compression region. In the limit of large diffusion, the spectrum becomes identical to that of diffusive shock acceleration, and when diffusion is small enough, it is consistent with adiabatic acceleration by …

Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber Aug 2007

Evaluation Of Two Washington State Department Of Transportation Stormwater Facilities Along State Route 18 Highway, Sherry L. Weber

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In 1987 the Clean Water Act (CWA) was amended to address non-point sources through the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program, which was divided into Phase I and Phase II. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a NPDES Phase I permit applicant, which requires them to monitor their facilities for specific water quality parameters. Effective and affordable treatment of highway runoff is a significant concern, because various pollutants found in non-point source runoff can impact the overall health of a watershed. Furthermore, many factors influence the types and concentrations of pollutants found in stormwater and the various types …

Risk Assessment In Early Software Design Based On The Software Function-Failure Design Method, Jayson P. Vucovich, Robert B. Stone, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Irem Y. Tumer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Potential software failures present a sizable risk element in the design and development of many systems. In this paper, we augment the Software Function-Failure Design method, which is capable of predicting potential software failures in the very early stages of design, with the Risk in Early Design technique. This synergistic combination allows a risk assessment to be conducted at an early time in the software development process when traditional techniques are not applicable. The results are concise risk statements regarding the potential failure of functionalities with likelihood and consequence quantifications that can be used as part of a risk management …

Effects Of Aggregates On Properties And Performance Of Mastics And Superpave Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures, Francisco Aragão Aug 2007

Effects Of Aggregates On Properties And Performance Of Mastics And Superpave Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures, Francisco Aragão

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Superpave, a set of advancements in testing devices and specifications for asphalt binders and mixtures, was limited to address the effects of aggregates. Because aggregates represent around 95% in mass of the asphalt mixtures, it is important to understand how these materials affect properties and performance of such mixtures. This research focus on how different types and contents of aggregates affect properties of mastics and asphalt mixtures, and their performance considering the viscoelastic nature of the asphalt material.

Five different types of aggregates and hydrated lime were used for sample fabrication together with two different binders. Several different tests were …

Wind Effects On Monosloped And Sawtooth Roofs, Bo Cui Aug 2007

Wind Effects On Monosloped And Sawtooth Roofs, Bo Cui

All Dissertations

Wind is one of the significant forces of nature that must be considered in the design of buildings. The actual behavior of wind is influenced not only by the surface (or boundary-layer) conditions, but also by the geometry of the building. All sorts of turbulent effects occur, especially at building corners, edges, roof eaves. Some of these effects are accounted for by the wind pressure coefficient. Wind pressure coefficients used in practice have usually been obtained from experimentally by testing models of different type of structures in wind tunnels.
In this study, a series of wind tunnel tests with scale …

Investigation Of Proton-Proton Short-Range Correlations Via The (12)C(E,E′Pp) Reaction, R. Shneor, Timothy Holmstrom, Jefferson Hall Lab A Collaboration Aug 2007

Investigation Of Proton-Proton Short-Range Correlations Via The (12)C(E,E′Pp) Reaction, R. Shneor, Timothy Holmstrom, Jefferson Hall Lab A Collaboration

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

We investigated simultaneously the 12C(e,e′p) and 12C(e,e′pp) reactions at Q2=2  (GeV/c)2, xB=1.2, and in an (e, e′p) missing-momentum range from 300 to 600  MeV/c. At these kinematics, with a missing momentum greater than the Fermi momentum of nucleons in a nucleus and far from the delta excitation, short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations are predicted to dominate the reaction. For (9.5±2)% of the 12C(e,e′p) events, a recoiling partner proton was observed back-to-back to the 12C(e,e′p) missing-momentum vector, an experimental signature of correlations.

Coherent Excitation Of The Optic Phonon In Si: Transiently Stimulated Raman Scattering With Afinite-Lifetime Electronic Excitation, D. Mark Riffe, A. J. Sabbah Aug 2007

Coherent Excitation Of The Optic Phonon In Si: Transiently Stimulated Raman Scattering With Afinite-Lifetime Electronic Excitation, D. Mark Riffe, A. J. Sabbah

All Physics Faculty Publications

Using 28-fs, 800-nm laser pulses we have coherently excited and subsequently probed, with time-dependent reflectivity, the Si zone-center optic phonon. The phonon-induced reflectivity change ΔR∕R is well described by the response of an underdamped oscillator: ΔR∕R∝ exp(−t∕τph) cos(2πt∕Tph+ϕ). The measured phase ϕ indicates that transiently stimulated Raman scattering (TSRS) is responsible for the coherent-phonon generation: our results are in good agreement with a recent theory of TSRS for opaque materials [ T. E. Stevens et al. Phys. Rev. B 65 144304 (2002)] when we extend the theory to include the finite lifetime of the excited charge …

Stochastic Reconstruction Of Snow Microstructure From X-Ray Microtomography Images, Hongyan Yuan Aug 2007

Stochastic Reconstruction Of Snow Microstructure From X-Ray Microtomography Images, Hongyan Yuan

Engineering

The three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution digitized snow microstructure (pixel size 6 micron) was obtained by X-ray microtomography. The experimental result was verified by measuring the density of the snow sample. Statistical characteristics (porosity, local porosity, two-point correlation function) were extracted from cross-sectional images. The one-level-cut Gaussian random field model was used to stochastically reconstruct snow microstructure from X-ray microtomography images. Efficient computer programs were developed in MATLAB for the whole stochastic reconstruction procedure, including the numerical inversion of the correlation function and the generation of 3D large-scale Gaussian random fields by 3D inverse fast Fourier transform. The quality of the reconstruction …

Thermophysical Properties Measurements And Numerical Modeling Of Nanofluids, Praveen Krishna Namburu Aug 2007

Thermophysical Properties Measurements And Numerical Modeling Of Nanofluids, Praveen Krishna Namburu

Engineering

This thesis covers measurements of the thermo physical properties of various nanofluids containing copper oxide (CuO), silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) nanoparticles and numerical investigation on the fluid dynamic and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. Nanofluids are dispersions of nanometer-sized particles (<100 nm) in heat transfer liquids such as water, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. An ethylene glycol and water (60:40 by mass) mixture was used as a base fluid in which various volume concentrations of nanofluids were dispersed. These nanofluids will be useful in the sub-arctic and arctic environments. Experiments were performed to investigate the rheological properties of CuO, SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ nanofluids. New viscosity correlations for different nanofluids as a function of volume concentration and temperature were developed. Using these correlations heat transfer performance of nanofluids as compared to the base fluid was numerically analyzed for laminar as well as for turbulent flows. Developing laminar flows in a parallel plate duct were computed for Reynolds number ranging from 100 to 2000 for various concentrations of CuO nanofluids. Turbulent convective heat transfer in circular tube geometry under a prescribed heat flux was numerically analyzed for Reynolds numbers ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁵. Heat transfer enhancement of various nanofluids over the base fluid was evaluated. The numerical results show enhanced heat transfer with increase in the volume concentration of nanoparticles.

Observation Of Type-I And Type-Ii Excitons In Strained Si/Sige Quantum-Well Structures, K. Y. Wang, W. P. Huang, H. H. Cheng, Greg Sun, R. A. Soref, R. J. Nicholas, Y. W. Suen Aug 2007

Observation Of Type-I And Type-Ii Excitons In Strained Si/Sige Quantum-Well Structures, K. Y. Wang, W. P. Huang, H. H. Cheng, Greg Sun, R. A. Soref, R. J. Nicholas, Y. W. Suen

Physics Faculty Publications

The authors report photoluminescence (PL) measurement on a series of Si/SiGequantum-well structures that had different internal strain distributions. When each sample was placed in a high magnetic field, the field-dependent energy shift of the relevant PL peaks revealed either type-I or type-II exciton formation depending on the strain distribution. This observation is in agreement with theoretical modeling. The present investigation shows that type-I band alignment—desired for electroluminescent devices—can be achieved by strain engineering.

Nevada's Textbook Adoption Process: The State Perspective, Mitch Bishop, Katie Bliven, Scott Hess Aug 2007

Nevada's Textbook Adoption Process: The State Perspective, Mitch Bishop, Katie Bliven, Scott Hess

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The process in Nevada used to select textbooks, the main tools for classroom instruction, is a complex web of various stakeholders and interactions. Ensuring that quality textbooks get into the hands of Nevada's teachers and students is the goal of the selection process. The main impediments affecting the selection process may be found in the structure of the process and how the stakeholders interact. In most cases, these interactions and responsibilities are dictated by state law and were established gradually over several years. While the current process functions to place textbooks in schools, it also shows great potential for improvement …

A Supply Chain Design Model With Unreliable Supply, Lian Qi, Zuo-Jun Max Shen Aug 2007

A Supply Chain Design Model With Unreliable Supply, Lian Qi, Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Uncertainties abound within a supply chain and have big impacts on its performance. We propose an integrated model for a three-tiered supply chain network with one supplier, one or more facilities and retailers. This model takes into consideration the unreliable aspects of a supply chain. the properties of the optimal solution to the model are analyzed to reveal the impacts of supply uncertainty on supply chain design decisions. We also propose a general solution algorithm for this model. Computational experience is presented and discussed.

Ontology Aware Software Service Agents: Meeting Ordinary User Needs On The Semantic Web, Muhammed Jassem Al Muhammed Aug 2007

Ontology Aware Software Service Agents: Meeting Ordinary User Needs On The Semantic Web, Muhammed Jassem Al Muhammed

Theses and Dissertations

To achieve the dream of the semantic web, it must be possible for ordinary users to invoke services. It is clear that users need simple-to-invoke-and-use services. This dissertation offers an ontological approach to declaratively create services that users can invoke using free-form, natural-language-like specifications. Our approach uses task ontologies as foundational knowledge. A task ontology consists of a domain ontology and a process ontology. The domain ontology encodes domain information such as possible constraints and instances in terms of object sets, relationship sets among these object sets, and operations over values in object sets and relationship sets. The process ontology …

Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst Aug 2007

Headwater Stream Invertebrate Communities: A Comparison Across Ecoregions And Logging Histories, R. Bruce Medhurst

Biological Sciences

Monitoring stream condition is not always conducted with understanding how climate may influence anthropogenic disturbances. Stream monitoring has traditionally been accomplished through sampling benthic invertebrates, while sampling drifting invertebrates as a potential monitoring tool has received little attention, in spite of drift often being easier and less expensive to sample. The objectives of this study were to understand how logging influences headwater stream invertebrate communities (benthic and drift) across two ecoregions in the Cascade Range, central Washington, and to determine whether drift samples might serve as a replacement for benthic samples in assessing headwater stream condition. Benthic and drifting invertebrates …

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers Aug 2007

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers

Biological Sciences

We examined the role of scale and sex in habitat selection by radiocollared Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) on the Yakutat forelands, Alaska, USA. We used conditional logistic regression to quantify differences in habitats selected between sexes and seasons at 3 different spatial scales (250, 500, and 1000 m), and multi-response permutation procedure (MRPP) to test for differences in spatial distribution between the sexes. Sexes selected for habitats similarly during the mating season, when sexes generally were aggregated, whereas sexes exhibited differential habitat selection during the non-mating season when sexes were segregated. Both sexes selected habitats at the 1000 m …

Regional Climate, Federal Land Management, And The Social-Ecological Resilience Of Southeastern Alaska, Colin Mitchell Beier Aug 2007

Regional Climate, Federal Land Management, And The Social-Ecological Resilience Of Southeastern Alaska, Colin Mitchell Beier

Biological Sciences

Complex systems of humans and nature often experience rapid and unpredictable change that results in undesirable outcomes for both ecosystems and society. In circumpolar regions, where multiple converging drivers of change are reshaping both human and natural communities, there is uncertainty about future dynamics and the capacity to sustain the important interactions of social-ecological systems in the face of rapid change. This research addresses this uncertainty in the region of Southeast Alaska, where lessons learned from other circumpolar regions may not be applicable because of unique social and ecological conditions. Southeast Alaska contains the most productive and diverse ecosystems at …

Ground Penetrating Radar Forward And Backward Modeling For Layered Snow, Wei Wang Aug 2007

Ground Penetrating Radar Forward And Backward Modeling For Layered Snow, Wei Wang

Engineering

Forward and Backward Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) modeling can provide the information that is useful for geometric and electromagnetic interpretation of layered materials. Given the depth and dielectric constant of snow, one can simulate the GPR signal. This is called forward modeling. On the other hand, given the GPR signal, the determination of depth and dielectric constant is called backward modeling. In this thesis, we briefly discuss a computational GPR forward modeling approach, based on two pieces of software with different principles. The software GPRMAX is able to model snow layers with the Finite Difference Time Domain method; this method …

The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer Aug 2007

The Ecology Of Vertebrate Pests And Integrated Pest Management (Ipm), Gary W. Witmer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Across the world, vertebrates cause considerable annual damage to agriculture, property, human health and safety, and natural resources. Although some species of all vertebrate groups have been implicated in damage, the species most often involved in serious amounts of damage are birds and mammals. Agroecosystems have provided many new opportunities for vertebrates to exploit, resulting in their becoming serious "pests" with humans taking various steps to protect their agricultural resources. This conflict has intensified as the human population has increased, efforts to get more production out of traditional croplands have intensified, and marginal lands have been placed into crop production. …

A Simple Multi-Mission Flight Control Software For Cubesat , Warren Soh Aug 2007

A Simple Multi-Mission Flight Control Software For Cubesat , Warren Soh

Small Satellite Conference

One of the challenges to date for operational spacecrafts is to satisfy high attitude pointing accuracy missions using picosatellites. This is due to the limitations of putting a capable spacecraft attitude control subsystem into an extremely small volume. To overcome this design constraint, Micro Electrical Mechanical subsystem (MEMS) for attitude sensors and actuators are used. However MEMS are still limited in accuracy and performance compared to conventional sensors and actuators. Given these hardware limitations, the trade off is to increase the software capabilities of the Flight Control Software (FCS) without compromising on a simple architecture concept.
