A Hyperbolic Two -Step Model Based Finite Difference Method For Studying Thermal Deformation In A Micro Thin Film Heated By Ultrashort -Pulsed Lasers, Tianchan Niu

Doctoral Dissertations

Heat transport through micro thin films plays a very important role in microtechnology applications. Many microelectronic devices have metal thin films as their key components. Microscale heat transfer is also important for the thermal processing of materials, including laser micromachining, laser patterning, laser synthesis and laser surface hardening. Hence, studying the thermal behavior of thin films is essential for predicting the performance of a microelectronic device or for obtaining the desired microstructure. Recently, it has become very popular to use ultrashort-pulsed lasers in thermal processing, which lasers have pulse durations of the order of subpicoseconds to femtoseconds, and these kinds …

We have used positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the introduction and recovery of point defects introduced by 0.45 and 2 MeV electron irradiation at room temperature in n-type GaN. Isochronal annealings were performed up to 1220 K. We observe vacancy defects with specific lifetime of τV=190±15 ps that we tentatively identify as N vacancies or related complexes in the neutral charge state in the samples irradiated with 0.45 MeV electrons. The N vacancies are produced at a rate ΣN0.45≃0.25 cm−1. The irradiation with 2 MeV electrons produces negatively charged Ga vacancies and negative …

MARGINS has been awarded an NSF Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) grant to bring MARGINS research into widespread use in undergraduate teaching in ways that showcase the integrated, multidisciplinary approach that is characteristic of modern, front-line geoscience research. In collaboration with the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College, the project is developing a web-based collection of teaching materials referred to as “Mini-Lessons” (http://serc.carleton.edu/margins). Mini-Lessons range in scope from something as simple as the use of MARGINS science to illustrate a lecture to multi-day lab projects that capitalize on the MARGINS Data Repository. An exciting aspect of this …

Downregulation Of Rap1gap Contributes To Ras Transformation, Oxana Tsygankova, Gregory V. Prendergast, Kanchan Puttaswamy, Yan Wang, Michael D. Feldman, Hongbin Wang, Marcia S. Brose, Judy L. Meinkoth Oct 2007

Downregulation Of Rap1gap Contributes To Ras Transformation, Oxana Tsygankova, Gregory V. Prendergast, Kanchan Puttaswamy, Yan Wang, Michael D. Feldman, Hongbin Wang, Marcia S. Brose, Judy L. Meinkoth

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Although abundant in well-differentiated rat thyroid cells, Rap1GAP expression was extinguished in a subset of human thyroid tumor-derived cell lines. Intriguingly, Rap1GAP was downregulated selectively in tumor cell lines that had acquired a mesenchymal morphology. Restoring Rap1GAP expression to these cells inhibited cell migration and invasion, effects that were correlated with the inhibition of Rap1 and Rac1 activity. The reexpression of Rap1GAP also inhibited DNA synthesis and anchorage-independent proliferation. Conversely, eliminating Rap1GAP expression in rat thyroid cells induced a transient increase in cell number. Strikingly, Rap1GAP expression was abolished by Ras transformation. The downregulation of Rap1GAP by Ras required the …

"Children love to explore the world around them. In doing so they are not aware of disciplinary boundaries or even of disciplines. They move freely from watching ants (biology) to building structures (engineering) to counting rocks (mathematics and geology) to seeing what things dissolve in water (chemistry). Only as they go to school do they learn that humans divide up the way we learn about the universe and start to think within disciplinary boundaries. In doing so, those children, who are now us, lose the ability to think broadly and use the insights of various ways of thinking to solve …

Probabilistic neural networks (PNN) and general regression neural networks (GRNN) represent knowledge by simple but interpretable models that approximate the optimal classifier or predictor in the sense of expected value of the accuracy. These models require the specification of an important smoothing parameter, which is usually chosen by crossvalidation or clustering. In this article, we demonstrate the problems with the cross-validation and clustering approaches to specify the smoothing parameter, discuss the relationship between this parameter and some of © 2007 Massachusetts Institute of Technology the data statistics, and attempt to develop a fast approach to determine the optimal value of …

Implementing Uganda’S National Wetlands Policy: A Case Study Of Kabale District, Sophie Glass Oct 2007

Implementing Uganda’S National Wetlands Policy: A Case Study Of Kabale District, Sophie Glass

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Uganda’s “National Policy for the Conservation and Management of Wetland Resources” was launched in 1995 to promote the protection of Uganda’s wetlands in order to sustain their ecological and socioeconomic functions. Despite the formal policy, wetlands continue to be drained and converted. This report examines factors that account for the divide between the National Wetlands Policy and reality. Six weeks were spent researching the challenges associated with implementing the National Wetlands Policy. Kabale District was used as a case-study to better understand the issues that institutions and stakeholders face when trying to abide by the precepts of the policy. Rapid …

Distribution Of Ultraviolet-Absorbing Sunscreen Compounds Across The Body Surface Of Two Species Of Scaridae, Elizabeth Cerny-Chipman Oct 2007

Distribution Of Ultraviolet-Absorbing Sunscreen Compounds Across The Body Surface Of Two Species Of Scaridae, Elizabeth Cerny-Chipman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Ultraviolet radiation has far-reaching effects in marine ecosystems, but many marine organisms have UV-absorbing compounds that protect them from sun-induced damage. The mucus of coral reef fish has been found to contain mycosporine-like amino acids that absorb UV light from 309-360 nm. Using UV spectrophotometry, we examined whether fish are able to allocate these MAA sunscreen compounds to areas of the body that receive the most UV radiation. We compared absorbance spectra of mucus from the body surface of dorsal, ventral, caudal and head areas in two species of Scaridae (Scarus schlegeli and Chlorurus sordidus) from Coral Bay, Western Australia. …

The Microcredit Impact: The Evaluation And Effects Of Microloans On Caboclos Communities Of The Tapajós River, Robert Chew

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2002, Projeto Saúde e Alegria, an NGO dedicated to improving the health, education and socio-economic situation of rural caboclos communities of the greater Santarém region of Pará, began a microcredit program to facilitate the creation of alternative sources of income and poverty reduction within the communities. Three years later in 2005, the program was cancelled indefinitely due to low repayment rates. The following study attempts to identify and analyze what problems occurred within the microcredit program that led to the project’s eventual failure. Additionally, speculation into whether the program helped certain communities reduce poverty will also be investigated to …

Desarrollo Turístico Y Sustentabilidad: Caso Villa Pehuenia Y La Comunidad Mapuche Puel, Sasha Shahidi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

With limited resources and overpopulation on a global level, sustainable development is the only way that human beings will be able to survive on this earth. The problem is that the dominant model of development stresses the importance of economic profits in the short term and far too often exploits natural resources and less powerful cultural groups. This creates dangerous long-term affects as natural resources and indigenous cultures that depend on them continue to disappear with no plan, or possibility, to replace them. Sustainability seeks the least negative impacts possible on the natural environment and indigenous cultures in order to …

Thin-Film Evolution Equation For A Strained Solid Film On A Deformable Substrate: Numerical Steady States, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Brian J. Spencer Oct 2007

Thin-Film Evolution Equation For A Strained Solid Film On A Deformable Substrate: Numerical Steady States, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Brian J. Spencer

Articles

We consider the nonlinear behavior of the thin-film evolution equation for a strained solid film on a substrate. The evolution equation describes morphological changes to the film by surface diffusion in response to elastic energy, surface energy, and wetting energy. Due to the thin-film approximation, the elastic response of the film is determined analytically, resulting in a self-contained evolution equation which does not require separate numerical solution of the full three-dimensional elasticity problem. Using a pseudospectral predictor-corrector method we numerically determine the family of steady state solutions to this evolution equation which correspond to quantum dot and quantum ridge morphologies.

The Constitutionality Of Open Space Requirements And Minimum Lot Sizes, Matthew Weiss Oct 2007

The Constitutionality Of Open Space Requirements And Minimum Lot Sizes, Matthew Weiss

Land Use Clinic

The United States Supreme Court and other federal and state courts have consistently dismissed challenges against open space requirements and reductions in minimum lot sizes similar to those that exist within ordinances regulating conservation subdivisions. Although some precedent exists for finding open space requirements and minimum lot sizes unconstitutional, courts have only reached such conclusions in limited situations where the challenged regulations destroy the entire economic value of a plaintiff’s property, where there is no rational basis for the regulations, or where the land use regulation is found to substantially interfere with the property owner’s use and enjoyment of their …
