Leadership Through Collaborative Strategic Planning: One School’S Journey, Sally Lewis, Sylvia Imler

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Educational administrators, school board members, and policy makers have been mandated to account for the learning and performance of the highly diverse students that comprise today’s classrooms. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) have presented a set of challenges for educating all children using data-driven decisions in a standards-based curriculum with culturally responsive practices. These mandates from federal and state legislation demand a change in administrative culture. These challenges require school personnel to develop plans to adjust their practices to meet the academic and behavioral needs of …

The photophysical and electrochemical properties of a platinum(II) diimine complex bearing the bidentate diacetylide ligand tolan-2,2'-diacetylide (tda), Pt(dbbpy)(tda) [dbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine] (1), are compared with two reference compounds, Pt(dbbpy)(C CPh)(2) (2) and Pt(dppp)tda [dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane] (3), respectively, The X-ray crystal structure of 1 is reported, which illustrates the nearly perfect square planarity exhibited by this metallacycle. Chromophore 2 possesses low-lying charge-transfer excited states analogous to 1, whereas structure 3 lacks such excited states but features a low-lying platinum-perturbed tda intraligand triplet manifold. In CH2Cl2, 1 exhibits a broad emission centered at 562 nm at ambient temperature, similar to 2, …

Ultrafast Dynamics Of Triplet Excitons In Alq3-Bridge-Pt(Ii)Porphyrin Electroluminescent Materials, Victor A. Montes, Cesar Perez-Bolivar, Leandro A. Estrada, Joseph Shinar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Oct 2007

Ultrafast Dynamics Of Triplet Excitons In Alq3-Bridge-Pt(Ii)Porphyrin Electroluminescent Materials, Victor A. Montes, Cesar Perez-Bolivar, Leandro A. Estrada, Joseph Shinar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Excited-state dynamics are crucial for maximizing the performance of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Because electron-hole recombination yields singlet and triplet excited states in a 3:1 ratio, it is important to harvest the energy of triplets in light-emitting processes. Self-assembled multichromophore electroluminescent materials consisting of a trisquinolinolate aluminum(III) (Alq(3)) donor, fluorene-based conjugated oligomers; as a bridge, and Pt(II)tetraphenylporphyrin as an acceptor and phosphorescent emitter are described. In these materials, the energy of singlet as well as triplet states is harvested and emitted as red phosphorescence from the porphyrin acceptor. Attention was devoted to the triplet exciton dynamics, which was …

We update and reevaluate the scientific information on the distribution, history, and causes of continental shelf hypoxia that supports the 2001 Action Plan for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force 2001), incorporating data, publications, and research results produced since the 1999 integrated assessment. The metric of mid-summer hypoxic area on the Louisiana-Texas shelf is an adequate and suitable measure for continued efforts to reduce nutrients loads from the Mississippi River and hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico as outlined in the Action Plan. More frequent measurements …

Public School Choice And Integration: Evidence From Durham, North Carolina, Robert Bifulco, Helen F. Ladd, Stephen Ross Oct 2007

Public School Choice And Integration: Evidence From Durham, North Carolina, Robert Bifulco, Helen F. Ladd, Stephen Ross

Economics Working Papers

Using evidence from Durham, North Carolina, we examine the impact of school choice programs on racial and class-based segregation across schools. Theoretical considerations suggest that how choice programs affect segregation will depend not only on the family preferences emphasized in the sociology literature but also on the linkages between student composition, school quality and student achievement emphasized in the economics literature, and on the availability of schools of different types. Reasonable assumptions about how these factors differ for students of different races and socio-economic status suggest that the segregating choices of students from advantaged backgrounds are likely to outweigh any …

We describe the design optimization process and performance characterization of a next generation neutron telescope, with imaging and energy measurement capabilities, sensitive to neutrons in the 1-20 MeV energy range. The response of the Fast Neutron Imaging Telescope (FNIT), its efficiency in neutron detection, energy resolution and imaging capabilities were characterized through a combination of lab tests and Monte Carlo simulations. Monte Carlo simulations, together with experimental data, are also being used in the development and testing of the image reconstruction algorithm. FNIT was initially conceived to study solar neutrons as a candidate instrument for the Inner Heliosphere Sentinel (IHS) …

Analysis Of Two-Dimensional High-Energy Photoelectron Momentum Distributions In The Single Ionization Of Atoms By Intense Laser Pulses, Zhangjin Chen, Toru Morishita, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin Oct 2007

Analysis Of Two-Dimensional High-Energy Photoelectron Momentum Distributions In The Single Ionization Of Atoms By Intense Laser Pulses, Zhangjin Chen, Toru Morishita, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We analyzed the two-dimensional (2D) electron momentum distributions of high-energy photoelectrons of atoms in an intense laser field using the second-order strong field approximation (SFA2). The SFA2 accounts for the rescattering of the returning electron with the target ion to first order and its validity is established by comparing with results obtained by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for short pulses. By analyzing the SFA2 theory, we confirmed that the yield along the back rescattered ridge in the 2D momentum spectra can be interpreted as due to the elastic scattering in the backward directions by the returning electron wave packet. …

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Displays As Optical Sensors Of Barbiturate Binding, R. Carlisle Chambers, Elissa J. Bell, Tauni M. Records, Anna Cherian, Karen Ragan, Bonnie Swartout Oct 2007

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Displays As Optical Sensors Of Barbiturate Binding, R. Carlisle Chambers, Elissa J. Bell, Tauni M. Records, Anna Cherian, Karen Ragan, Bonnie Swartout

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

The influence on the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal displays (LCDs) was examined for neutral molecule binding by mesogen/receptors in the mesomorphic phase. The motivation was to prepare neutral molecule sensors that use a colour change to signal analyte binding. A receptor that binds barbiturate analytes was modified with two or one cholesteryl groups to yield compounds 2 and 3, respectively. LCDs were prepared by incorporating one of the receptor/mesogen compounds into a cholesteric LC blend along with a potential Hbonding guest. The optical properties of the LCDs were then determined by measuring the absorbance of the displays. For …

Case Study: Applying A Regional Cge Model For Estimation Of Indirect Economic Losses Due To Damaged Highway Bridges, Chakkaphan Tirasirichai, David Lee Enke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Destruction from natural and man-made disasters can result in extensive damage to the affected area's infrastructure. While the destruction results in costs that are necessary to restore the physical destruction and repair of existing infrastructure, a wider economic impact is often indirectly measured and felt. Policymakers generally focus only on losses that are directly caused by the destruction, such as the replacement of roads and bridges, yet tend to overlook the consequences from indirect economic losses. This study proposes a framework to estimate the indirect economic loss due to damaged bridges within the highway system of a major metropolitan area. …

An Extraordinary Patch Of Feral Hog Damage In Florida Before And After Initiating Hog Removal, Richard M. Engeman, John Woolard, Henry T. Smith, Jean Bourassa, Bernice U. Constantin, Daniel Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Feral hogs (Sus scrofa) are a particularly destructive exotic species in the United States (U.S. Department of Agriculture 1999), including Florida, which, along with Hawaii, is one of 2 states cited as having the most severe invasive species problems (U.S. Congress 1993) in the country. First introduced to North America by the European colonists (Conover 2007) hogs were one of the first invasive exotic species to take hold in Florida. They can transmit disease to livestock (Hartin et al. 2007) and humans (Conover and Vail 2007). They impose a variety of negative environmental impacts, including habitat degradation and …

Their Work, Identity, And Entry To The Profession, Youlanda C. Washington, Stephen K. Miller, Jeanne R. Fiene

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This qualitative multi-site case study examines Kentucky's female superintendents: their professional work, identity, and entry to the role. Data sources were extensive interviews from twelve districts-superintendents, central office administrators, and school board members, plus questionnaires and district documents. Results revealed a web-like organizational structure with collegial, caring empowerment from the center. A child-centered vision of increasing achievement for all students guided their instructional leadership. Generalizability regarding feminine leadership theory is extended to Kentucky, a rural traditional state with comprehensive reform and high-stakes accountability. The feminine sty Ie of these superintendents parallels studies of effective district- level instructional leadership.

Study Of Contra-Rotating Coaxial Rotors In Hover: A Performance Model Based On Blade Element Theory Including Swirl Velocity, Florent Lucas Oct 2007

Study Of Contra-Rotating Coaxial Rotors In Hover: A Performance Model Based On Blade Element Theory Including Swirl Velocity, Florent Lucas

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study is to create a simple model to evaluate the performance of a counter-rotating coaxial rotor system. As it is based on the blade element theory, it could be used as a design tool where the engineer can modify all parameters - rotor radius, blade pitch distribution, tip velocity, rotor spacing, number of blades, blade chord, and airfoil's shape through its lift coefficient versus angle of attack slope. Different blade pitch distributions are tried and are assessed based on the power required to hover at the same weight. Also, the impact of the swirl velocity induced …

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

This manual is intended as a reference for people investigating wildlife mortality events or illness. Its primary objective is to ensure that appropriate samples are collected in the field, and that these reach a diagnostic laboratory in suitable condition for detailed examination. This will ensure an optimal chance to determine the cause and nature of the disease and to assess significance.

It is impossible to provide detailed guidelines that will be appropriate for all circumstances; our intent is to provide general directions that can be modified to fit the circumstances. Whenever possible, the laboratory that will be examining the specimens …

Demonstrating In The Classroom Ideas Of Frequency Response, Mark A. Hopkins Oct 2007

Demonstrating In The Classroom Ideas Of Frequency Response, Mark A. Hopkins

Presentations and other scholarship

One of the most persistently difficult concepts to communicate to students is that of “frequency response”, because it spans both the frequency-domain and the time-domain. This paper presents a Matlab®-based graphical method of demonstrating several important relationships among pole/zero locations, Bode plot (i.e., Fourier transform), and time-domain sinusoidal response. The author has been using this method successfully for several years in a variety of systemsrelated courses to help students understand these relationships. The software is also easily available to students, so they may reconstruct classroom demonstrations, and do much more. In the demonstrations, Bode magnitude and phase plots are programmatically …

Benthic Mapping For Habitat Classification In The Peconic Estuary: Phase I Groundtruth Studies, Robert M. Cerrato, Nicole P. Maher

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Benthic habitat maps of the estuary seafloor will increase our knowledge of range and variability in benthic habitats, will assist managers in their efforts to protect and/or restore commercially and recreationally important finfish and shellfish, will link land usage (e.g. developed vs. undeveloped areas) and water quality data to benthic habitat quality, and will make it possible to utilize faunal data as a long-term indicator of the overall “health” of the estuary. We are developing benthic habitat maps by combining high-resolution remote sensing techniques with detailed study of the physical and faunal characteristics at point locations in different seafloor environments. …
