Experiences Of Sacramental Marriage, James Patrick O'Brien Edd May 2007

Experiences Of Sacramental Marriage, James Patrick O'Brien Edd

Dissertations

This study interprets the stories told by eight couples about their experiences approaching marriage as a religious sacrament. The eight couples represented a purposeful sample selected using the following criteria: (a) They self-identified as having a sacramental marriage within the Roman Catholic tradition; (b) they appeared to be information rich sources who could provide an emic, i.e., an insider, view of the sacramental marriage experience; (c) they participated in the Catholic Cursillo movement; (d) they engaged in observable religious practices; and (e) they parented children. Research methods included guided conversation, participant observation, and a timeline activity that asked participants to …

Effect Of Computer-Aided Instruction On Grades In Middle School Algebra, Patricia A. Taepke Edd May 2007

Effect Of Computer-Aided Instruction On Grades In Middle School Algebra, Patricia A. Taepke Edd

Dissertations

Computers and targeted software are increasingly common in the middle school algebra classroom, but the efficacy of computer-aided instruction on classroom achievement in middle school algebra remains unclear. Participants were 1452 middle-school algebra students who were seldom, occasionally, or often exposed to the algebra modules of Destination Math, an interactive mathematics software designed to be appropriate for in-school use. Data were collected over three years (2002–04) and included the cooperation of the algebra teachers, who were subsequently interviewed. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, ANCOVA, and multiple regression. Statistically significant effects were localized using pairwise tests with Bonferroni correction for multiple …

Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd May 2007

Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd

Dissertations

As our world grows increasingly complicated at an intensified pace, leaders must be facile managers of complexity if organizations and society are to productively and peacefully evolve. Today’s global corporations are microcosms of complexity and have the potential to affect life for almost all other species. However, many organizations have not yet become aware of themselves as “living” and still operate as industrial age institutions with rationalist thinking traditionally dominating management practice. Many factors impact an organization’s overall effectiveness. Yet, executive leaders are seen as having the ability to influence change and play a vital role in helping people navigate …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Health-Related Socioeconomic Well-Being In Persons With A Cancer Diagnosis., Barbara Anderson Head May 2007

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Measure Health-Related Socioeconomic Well-Being In Persons With A Cancer Diagnosis., Barbara Anderson Head

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The impact of socioeconomic status on the diagnosis, treatment, survival, and overall quality of life in persons with cancer has been well documented. Yet, many studies overlook the relevance of socioeconomic factors when measuring the impact of cancer care. A multitude of tools exist for the measuring of health-related quality of life (QOL) in oncology, but the majority do not recognize socioeconomic well-being as a relevant domain. The FACT-G, perhaps the most often used measure of QOL in oncology, measures the domains of physical, functional, social/family, and emotional well-being as core measures with optional instruments available to address spiritual well-being …

Ethical Strategies That Make 'Good' Business Sense: Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Products, Bambi Thompson May 2007

Ethical Strategies That Make 'Good' Business Sense: Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Prescription Products, Bambi Thompson

All Theses

The increased use of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription pharmaceuticals has caused everyone from physicians and patients to congressmen and professionals to question the ethics of the practice. Although the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulates advertising content, healthcare professionals often criticize the practice on the basis of weakening the doctor-patient relationship and jeopardizing patient well-being. Pharmaceutical companies have found print and broadcast ads in DTC campaigns to greatly increase the sales of their products. However, because of the impact of DTC on patient lives and health, the ethics of the practice need examination. The purpose of this thesis is to …

The Centrality Of Metaphor In Legal Analysis And Communication: An Introduction, David T. Ritchie May 2007

The Centrality Of Metaphor In Legal Analysis And Communication: An Introduction, David T. Ritchie

Mercer Law Review

Law, as a domain of human enterprise, is fundamentally discursive in nature. As such, understanding the elements of legal discourse, both analytical and communicative, is vital to understanding the nature of the enterprise. Metaphorical reasoning, and the communication of that reasoning, is one such element. Perhaps metaphor is one among many elements of legal discourse. In this view, metaphor theory would take its place alongside logic, narrative theory, rhetoric, and so on.

Who Is On The Outside Looking In, And What Do They See?: Metaphors Of Exclusion In Legal Education, David T. Ritchie May 2007

Who Is On The Outside Looking In, And What Do They See?: Metaphors Of Exclusion In Legal Education, David T. Ritchie

Mercer Law Review

Many people might assume that metaphors are linguistic devices that pithily play on associations between unrelated kinds of things. These associations, many might further assume, show how deft an author can be at using a turn of phrase or how agile a speaker might be using widely known imagery to illustrate a point. Such assumptions are not completely arbitrary, as metaphors do indeed have important literary aspects. This device, though, is often presumed to be a mere literary or rhetorical trope designed to enliven one's language or show intellectual dexterity in discourse. Metaphor is, in this view, a mere trick …

[Re]Engaging The Urban Poverty Challenge, Jeremy A. Emerson May 2007

[Re]Engaging The Urban Poverty Challenge, Jeremy A. Emerson

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Today about 1 billion people, one in every six human beings, live in what the western world calls “slums.” Nations such as Mexico face an incredible challenge: millions of people don’t have a decent place to live. But the problem is more than just a housing shortage; urban poverty is exacerbated by residential segregation within cities. Designers must engage the challenge to create extremely low-cost housing that can be a real means of overcoming geographic isolation.

Web-Based Language Portfolios And The Five C'S: Implementation In Intermediate- And Advanced-Level Foreign Language College Classrooms, Jane Blyth Warren

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Web-based portfolios serve as authentic assessment in the foreign language curriculum when organized around the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning. Portfolios align curriculum and assessment with the standards, ensuring that student learning and progress follow these standards. Web-based portfolios enhance student learning by integrating the learning of culture with the learning of the target language. In web-based language portfolios, students create individual web pages for each of the standards. These standards were developed as guidelines for the teaching of foreign language and culture in the United States. Questions for this study included whether students perceived that web-based language portfolios …

Ditcall-Slow: Slowing Native Speech For Language Learners, Dermot Campbell, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Yi Wang, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson, Charles Pritchard

Conference papers

It is a common experience of many learners of a foreign language that native speakers (NSs) of that language speak too quickly for them to understand or imitate. Slowing down a segment of speech with older technology results in the familiar deepening of the voice as the pitch drops as well. The result is unpleasant and not particularly instructive. The DITCall-Slow tool slows recorded speech without tonal distortion, so that the learner has – literally – more time to hear what was said by the NS and, especially at slower playback speeds, can attend to the manner in which the …

Toward Salvation: Italo Calvino’S Wakeful Phenomenology, May C. Peckham May 2007

Toward Salvation: Italo Calvino’S Wakeful Phenomenology, May C. Peckham

Senior Honors Projects

“Lightness.” The word remains inescapable when attending to the mysterious work of Italo Calvino. It appears elusively in the texts of his novels and acts as a catalyst to many of his critical endeavors. Calvino addresses most explicitly this concept of lightness in his collection of lectures entitled Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Although these lectures were never delivered, they exist as a testament to the idea that “the boundless universe of literature” contains “new avenues to be explored, both very recent and very ancient, styles and forms that can change our image of the world” (Six Memos 7-8). …

Corticospinal Excitability During A Perspective-Taking Task : Implications For Self Vs. Other Processing, Elizabeth M. Murray

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Only by understanding the uniquely human ability to take a first- second- and third-person perspective, can we begin to elucidate the neural processes responsible for one’s inimitable conscious experience. The current study examined differences in hemispheric laterality during a first-person perspective (1PP) and third-person perspective (3PP) taking task, using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Subjects were asked to take either the 1PP or 3PP in identifying the number of spheres in a virtual scene. During this task, single- pulse TMS was delivered to the motor cortex of both the left and right hemispheres of 10 healthy volunteers. Measures of TMS-induced motor-evoked …

Class Indifference - A Divided Nation : Finding Common Ground Through American Pragmatism And Democratic Principles In The Composition Classroom, Stacey L. Morrison May 2007

Class Indifference - A Divided Nation : Finding Common Ground Through American Pragmatism And Democratic Principles In The Composition Classroom, Stacey L. Morrison

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Social class plays a significant but often silent part in American politics, lives, and education. As the events of Hurricane Katrina clearly illustrate, the poor and working class often suffer discrimination that leaves them completely powerless. Their position in life shapes not only how they are seen and treated, but also how they see their world. Their cultures differ markedly from middle and upper class cultures, further alienating them from possible greater personal achievement in a system that champions middle-class values. Education, being a microcosm of our society, mirrors our class conflicts, often failing to teach working-class students in an …

Collectionner Et Narrer : Deux Exemples Littéraires Chez Marguerite De Navarre Et Françoise De Graffigny, Diane E. Peyser May 2007

Collectionner Et Narrer : Deux Exemples Littéraires Chez Marguerite De Navarre Et Françoise De Graffigny, Diane E. Peyser

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This project analyzes how the act of storytelling, which is comparable to collecting, bears upon the structure of narrative. The connection between the narrative voice of women, their points of view, and how they obtain the power of their voices will be explored in this thesis on the basis of L ’Heptaméron by Marguerite de Navarre and Lettres d ’une Péruvienne by Françoise de Graffigny.

Chapter 1 introduces a theory that the act of collecting is also a way of telling stories. This analysis will introduce how Marguerite de Navarre and Françoise de Graffigny utilize this method to tell their …

Musical Mystique : How Today’S Pop Music Can Be Interpreted By Young Audiences, Amy Melissa Young May 2007

Musical Mystique : How Today’S Pop Music Can Be Interpreted By Young Audiences, Amy Melissa Young

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Music is everywhere and so is its influence. Like all media, music can help us express ourselves, but it also can impact our lives. The following study investigates pop music by female artists and how this genre impacts the lives of young audiences. The research asks what images of women and relational scripts are offered through this genre, but this study also asks what audiences are doing with it.

Media studies have taken us from “The Magic Bullet” to “Uses and Gratifications” and almost everywhere in between. Somewhere in the middle of all of these theories lies Hall’s view of …

What Good Is The Social Model Of Disability?, Adam M. Samaha May 2007

What Good Is The Social Model Of Disability?, Adam M. Samaha

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

A social model of disability relates a person’s disadvantage to the combination of personal traits and social setting. The model appears to have had a profound impact on academics, politics, and law since the 1970s. Scholars have debated the model’s force but its limitations are more severe than have been recognized. This Article claims that the model, like all social construction accounts, has essentially no policy implications. Its impact depends on normative commitments developed by some other logic, such as membership in the disability rights movement or adherence to versions of libertarian, utilitarian, or egalitarian theory that are triggered by …

Bimodality Revisited, Thomas R. Knapp May 2007

Bimodality Revisited, Thomas R. Knapp

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Degree of bimodality is an important feature of a frequency distribution, because it could suggest heterogeneity, such as polarization or two underlying distributions combined into one. The literature contains several measures of bimodality. This article attempts to summarize most of those measures, with their attendant advantages and disadvantages.
