Beyond The Classroom Walls: A Study Of Out-Of-Class English Use By Adult Community College Esl Students, Tracey Louise Knight Oct 2007

Beyond The Classroom Walls: A Study Of Out-Of-Class English Use By Adult Community College Esl Students, Tracey Louise Knight

Dissertations and Theses

Research in Second Language Acquisition indicates that using English outside of the classroom is an important part of the language learning process. However, studies done on university level ESL and EFL students indicate that students use English minimally when outside of the classroom. This thesis furthers the research on English use outside of the classroom in order to more fully understand all types of language learners and the link between language proficiency and out-of-class English use.

Reframing School Dropout As A Public Health Issue, Nicholas Freudenberg, Jessica Ruglis Oct 2007

Reframing School Dropout As A Public Health Issue, Nicholas Freudenberg, Jessica Ruglis

Publications and Research

Good education predicts good health, and disparities in health and in educational achievement are closely linked. Despite these connections, public health professionals rarely make reducing the number of students who drop out of school a priority, although nearly one-third of all students in the United States and half of black, Latino, and American Indian students do not graduate from high school on time. In this article, we summarize knowledge on the health benefits of high school graduation and discuss the pathways by which graduating from high school contributes to good health. We examine strategies for reducing school dropout rates with …

Poverty Reduction In Nepal: A Clinical Economics Approach, Gyan Pradhan, Rabindra Bhandari Oct 2007

Poverty Reduction In Nepal: A Clinical Economics Approach, Gyan Pradhan, Rabindra Bhandari

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Following Sachs (2005), this paper adopts a clinical economics approach and attempts to undertake a systematic “differential diagnosis” of the nature and scope of poverty in Nepal. Subsequently, we will examine the causes of poverty and the determinants of household per capita income in Nepal. Ultimately, we hope to propose programs and institutions to address the critical barriers to poverty reduction that are identified through the differential diagnosis.

Inter- And Intra-Subject Variability: A Palatometric Study, Marybeth Corey Sanders Oct 2007

Inter- And Intra-Subject Variability: A Palatometric Study, Marybeth Corey Sanders

Theses and Dissertations

Electropalatometry (EPM) has proven to be a useful clinical and research tool for measuring tongue-to-palate contact. The goal of this study was to determine whether the development of a database of standardized palatometric articulation files is feasible by examining the variability which exists within and between speakers. Twenty standard American English dialect speakers were fitted with palatometer pseudopalates. Test stimuli were VCV nonsense words using a schwa in the initial position, the 15 palatal consonants, and three corner vowels, /a/, /i/, /u/. From these palatometric recordings a variability index was created to examine intra- and interspeaker variability. Different aspects of …

Putting Money Where The Mouth Is: Does Aid To Nepal Finance What The Donors Say They Want To Finance?, Sailesh Tiwari Oct 2007

Putting Money Where The Mouth Is: Does Aid To Nepal Finance What The Donors Say They Want To Finance?, Sailesh Tiwari

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper replicates and extends a well known model of quantifying categorical fungibility of foreign aid to study the effect of aid on government consumption, magnitude and composition of government investment and revenue mobilization in Nepal. I find that aid intended for a particular sector has, by and large, been spent within that sector and, in fact, induced the government to augment its spending on that particular sector for most categories studied. This broadly corroborates the evidence on the “flypaper effect” of aid not just at the aggregate level but also at the sectoral level. I also find that aid …

Adtrees For Sequential Data And N-Gram Counting, Robert Van Dam, Dan A. Ventura Oct 2007

Adtrees For Sequential Data And N-Gram Counting, Robert Van Dam, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of efficiently storing n-gram counts for large n over very large corpora. In such cases, the efficient storage of sufficient statistics can have a dramatic impact on system performance. One popular model for storing such data derived from tabular data sets with many attributes is the ADtree. Here, we adapt the ADtree to benefit from the sequential structure of corpora-type data. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach on a portion of the well-known Wall Street Journal corpus from the Penn Treebank and show that our approach is exponentially more efficient than the naïve approach to …
