Representational Status Of Minority Students In Special Education In The State Of Rhode Island, Megan O'Reilly Foran Jan 2007

Representational Status Of Minority Students In Special Education In The State Of Rhode Island, Megan O'Reilly Foran

Open Access Dissertations

The issue of overrepresentation of certain ethnic groups in special education has been a documented problem for decades. Several variables are hypothesized to be related to the overrepresentation of minority groups in special education including economic, demographic, and academic variables, as well as biases in the special education referral and placement process. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze characteristics of minority and non-minority children in special education in the state of Rhode Island to determine if there was a disproportionality problem in special education. Specifically, the study examined if there was a disproportionate representation of students of specific …

Using Spelling Performance To Study Literacy Acquisition In English For Spanish-Speaking Students In The Seventh Grade, Ivy E. Rollins Jan 2007

Using Spelling Performance To Study Literacy Acquisition In English For Spanish-Speaking Students In The Seventh Grade, Ivy E. Rollins

Open Access Dissertations

The U.S. educational system is undergoing dramatic increases in the rates of English Language Learners (ELLS), particularly those who speak Spanish as their first language (Kindler, 2002). The rising enrollment of ELL children highlights the importance of determining how to best meet the instructional needs of these students. One of the central issues pertains to whether literacy instruction should occur in Spanish or English. The prevailing recommendation is that Spanish-speaking ELL students first should learn to read in Spanish and subsequently learn to read in English. The purpose of the current study was to examine spelling development when this approach …

Computerized, Tailored, Theory-Based Interventions For Health Behavior Change: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, Paul M. Krebs Jan 2007

Computerized, Tailored, Theory-Based Interventions For Health Behavior Change: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, Paul M. Krebs

Open Access Dissertations

Personal behavior accounts for much of the risk associated with chronic disease, thereby providing incentive for development of interventions that offer effective prevention on a large scale. Computer tailored interventions have become increasingly common for facilitating behavior change for a number of health concerns associated with chronic disease. Systematic reviews of tailoring have been completed but a sufficient number of outcomes are now available to facilitate the quantitative analysis of overall effect sizes for this type of intervention. The present study employs meta-analytic techniques to assess the mean effect for tailored interventions focusing on four health behaviors: smoking cessation, increase …

Teacher-Written Feedback: Student Perceptions, Teacher Self-Assessment, And Actual Teacher Performance, Wendy Baker, Julie L. Montgomery Jan 2007

Teacher-Written Feedback: Student Perceptions, Teacher Self-Assessment, And Actual Teacher Performance, Wendy Baker, Julie L. Montgomery

Faculty Publications

Most research in second language (L2) writing has focused on students’ perceptions more than teachers’ self-assessment of teacher-written feedback. This study’s purpose was to investigate: (1) how much local and global written feedback teachers give, (2) how their self-assessments and students’ perceptions of this feedback coordinate, and (3) how well teachers’ self-assessments match their actual performance. Teachers and students in an intensive English as a second language (ESL) program were surveyed about their perceptions of teacher written feedback on compositions. These surveys were compared to teachers’ actual written feedback. Results indicated that teachers’ self-assessments and student perceptions of teacher-written feedback …

Why Learning French First Is Better Than Learning German First, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Laura Catharine Smith Jan 2007

Why Learning French First Is Better Than Learning German First, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Laura Catharine Smith

Faculty Publications

This study investigated whether differences in cross-language similarity between English-French and English-German vowels would translate into differences in accurately identifying and discriminating French and German vowels (i.e., Iii, /y/, and /u/). In addition, this study investigated whether these same differences in cross-language perception would also translate into differences in accurately identifying and discriminating vowels in a novel third language. The results suggest that learners exposed to a language with a greater perceived difference with the LI are more able to generalize their perception of their L2 vowels to a novel L3.

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson Jan 2007

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Scholars have generally ignored the Crusades from the Byzantine perspective with the majority of scholarship focusing on the Western, and more recently, Arabic viewpoints. Western sources from the period such as the Gesta Francorum and the account of Fulcher of Chartres typically portray Alexius I, the Byzantine emperor during the First Crusade, as anti-Western. It is this study’s position that Alexius’s actions derived from a need to protect his people and empire rather than a desire to see the crusaders’ mission fail. By studying the Byzantine perspective, we gain a fuller understanding of the First Crusade and the Crusades as …

Protecting Constitutionalism In Treacherous Times: Why 'Rights' Don't Matter, W. Wesley Pue Jan 2007

Protecting Constitutionalism In Treacherous Times: Why 'Rights' Don't Matter, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

Common lawyers have focused too much on rights talk and especially on constitutionally entrenched Bills of Rights in critiquing Anti-Terrorism legislation enacted by democratic common law countries since September 11, 2001. This paper illustrates the ways in which rights talk acts as a distraction from fundamental principles of legality when Anti-Terrorism laws are considered, arguing that embedded rights play three roles antithetical to sustaining governance in accordance with fundamental principles of legality: the roles of paper tiger, Trojan horse, and narcotic.

The Practice Of Law In The Peaceable Kingdom, Robert P. Burns Jan 2007

The Practice Of Law In The Peaceable Kingdom, Robert P. Burns

Georgia Law Review

Milner Ball would be the last person to claim to have constructed a system. After all, he writes in the essay form, one that is "tentative, reflective, suggestive, contradictory, and incomplete."' It is a style that suggests there is more afoot than any science or philosophy is likely to conceive and that much of what is most important has to be shown, not stated. Surely, the notion of a system, as in "the legal system," reflects many of the qualities that, as we will see, he is most at pains to criticize. However, there are definitely themes in his work …

Agglomeration, Spatio-Economic Clustering And Competitive Performance: Methodological Approaches And Empirical Evidence From The U.S., Gashawbeza W. Bekele Jan 2007

Agglomeration, Spatio-Economic Clustering And Competitive Performance: Methodological Approaches And Empirical Evidence From The U.S., Gashawbeza W. Bekele

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this dissertation is two fold. Firstly, the dissertation tests how well econometric and spatial analysis can be integrated for conducting industrial cluster analysis. Based on input-output and spatial autocorrelation based multivariate techniques, the dissertation develops a methodological approach for detecting spatially and economically linked industries. The dissertation then operationalizes this methodololigcal framework and applies tit to identify clusters in the U.S. at different geographical scales. The dissertation shows that the application of the methodological frameworks provides an objective mechanism to identify economically, and spatially, and spatio-economically related industries. Secondly, the dissertations empirically examines the extent to which …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the focus in special education shifts to a response to intervention model of early and intensive reading instruction, special emphasis is given to given to the explicit teaching of word structure knowledge in the various research-validated reading programs and reading strategies used in the classroom. The current research, a mixed-methods study, examined the word structure knowledge infused in four teacher preparation programs. Preservice teachers in general education and special education completed tests of word structure knowledge tests designed by Dr. Spear-Swerling. Additionally, course syllabi were analyzed and faculty interviewed regarding the nature and extent of specific word structure knowledge …

A Decision Making Model For Evaluating Suppliers By Multi-Layer Feed Forward Neural Networks., Davood Golmohammadi Jan 2007

A Decision Making Model For Evaluating Suppliers By Multi-Layer Feed Forward Neural Networks., Davood Golmohammadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An efficient decision making model was developed to select suppliers using Multi-Layer Feed Forward Neural Networks. Both types of criteria: qualitative and quantitative, were considered in the model. Fuzzy techniques were applied to convert qualitative data to quantitative data. The model structure was designed and tested. The results of the neural network model indicated that the proper structure of the model had a crucial effect on its performance. The selection of appropriate initial weights, learning rate and momentum were critical in improving the model performance. The applied genetic algorithm showed better performance in comparison with backpropagation. The genetic algorithm was …

[Introduction To] The Latino Body: Crisis Identities In American Literary And Cultural Memory, LáZaro Lima Jan 2007

[Introduction To] The Latino Body: Crisis Identities In American Literary And Cultural Memory, LáZaro Lima

Bookshelf

The Latino Body tells the story of the United States Latino body politic and its relation to the state: how the state configures Latino subjects and how Latino subjects have in turn altered the state. Lázaro Lima charts the interrelated groups that define themselves as Latinos and examines how these groups have responded to calls for unity and nationally shared conceptions of American cultural identity. He contends that their responses, in times of cultural or political crisis, have given rise to profound cultural transformations, enabling the so-called “Latino subject“ to emerge.

Analyzing a variety of cultural, literary, artistic, and popular …

An Image Processing Technique For The Improvement Of Sign2 Using A Dual Camera Approach, Kanthi Sarella Jan 2007

An Image Processing Technique For The Improvement Of Sign2 Using A Dual Camera Approach, Kanthi Sarella

Theses

A non-intrusive translation system to transform American Sign Language to digital text forms the pivotal point of discussion in the following thesis. With so many techniques which are being introduced for the same purpose in the present technological arena, this study lays claim to that relatively less trodden path of developing an unobtrusive, user-friendly and straightforward solution. The phase 1 of the Sign2 Project dealt with a single camera approach to achieve the same end of creating a translation system and my present investigation endeavors to develop a solution to improve the accuracy of results employing the methodology pursued in …

The Effectiveness Of Using Communication-Centered Intervention To Facilitate Phonological Learning In Young Children, Sharon Blodgett Hart Jan 2007

The Effectiveness Of Using Communication-Centered Intervention To Facilitate Phonological Learning In Young Children, Sharon Blodgett Hart

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A phonological disorder is a communication disorder of the speech sound system characterized by an impaired ability to use developmentally expected speech sounds and sound patterns to communicate with others (Bauman-Waengler, 2004). This impairment affects the clarity of a child's speech and how easily a child's speech can be understood. As stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), difficulties with speech sound production may interfere with academic achievement, social communication, or future occupational achievement. Children with phonological impairments are generally viewed as being at risk for reading difficulties (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2001).Clinicians …

The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley Jan 2007

The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

While this analysis of the Old, Middle, and Early Modern English translations of De Consolatione Philosophiandamp;aelig; provides a brief reception history and an overview of the critical tradition surrounding each version, its focus is upon how these renderings present particular moments that offer the consolation of eternity, especially since such passages typify the work as a whole. For Boethius, confused and conflicting views on fame, fortune, happiness, good and evil, fate, free will, necessity, foreknowledge, and providence are only capable of clarity and resolution to the degree that one attains to knowledge of the divine mind and especially to knowledge …

The Argument From Justice, Or How Not To Reply To Legal Positivism, Joseph Raz Jan 2007

The Argument From Justice, Or How Not To Reply To Legal Positivism, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Robert Alexy wrote a book whose avowed purpose is to refute the basic tenets of a type of legal theory which 'has long since been obsolete in legal science and practice'. The quotation is from the German Federal Constitutional Court in 1968. The fact that Prof Alexy himself mentions no writings in the legal positivist tradition [in English] later than Hart's The Concept of Law (1961) may suggest that he shares the court's view. The book itself may be evidence to the contrary. After all why flog a dead horse? Why write a book to refute a totally discredited …

Can There Be A Theory Of Law?, Joseph Raz Jan 2007

Can There Be A Theory Of Law?, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

The paper deals with the possibility of a theory of the nature of law as such, a theory which will be necessarily true of all law. It explores the relations between explanations of concepts and of the things they are concepts of, the possibility that the law has essential properties, and the possibility that the law changes its nature over time, and that what is law at a given place and time depends on the culture and concepts of that place and time. It also considers the possibility of understanding the institutions, such as the law, of cultures whose concepts …

“Out From Gens Romulum Into The Weal-Kin”: Re-Locating Modernist Poetics In David Jones’ AnathéMata And Basil Bunting’S Briggflatts, Lucie Boukalova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the decades following its publication in 1922, T.S. Eliot's Waste Land has become an epitome of the modernist sensibility and situation. This thesis challenges the poem's dominance and dictate over the canon of modernist poetry persisting in the academic discourse and general cultural awareness. Focusing on two post-WWII sequences by Eliot's younger contemporaries, David Jones' s Anathemata (1952) and Basil Bunting's Briggflatts (1966), this study explores alternative models and inspirative sources of the modernist poetic sequence. Through the constant comparison and contrast with Eliot's earlier articulation of the modern historico-cultural circumstance, Jones' and Bunting's specific foci and methods emerge …

Motor Learning And Its Application To Accent Modification, Lindsey Nicole Clark Jan 2007

Motor Learning And Its Application To Accent Modification, Lindsey Nicole Clark

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As the numbers of immigrants and non-native speakers of English continue to be high in the United States, there will also continue to be those who wish to alter their manner of speaking. Currently, there is little research discussing the effectiveness of traditional therapy techniques (i.e. auditory training, drill, and phonetic placement; Schmidt and Meyers, 1995). However, in recent years, research has shown high success rates in therapies based on motor learning principles ( e.g. Backer, 2003; Mueller, 2004; Nelson, 2004). By definition, motor learning is "a set of processes associated with practice or experience leading to relatively permanent changes …

Applications leveraging network presence in next-generation cellular networks have so far focused on subscription queries, where "presence" information is extracted from specific devices and sent to entities who have subscribed to such presence information. In this article we present BusinessFinder, a service that leverages the underlying cellular presence substrate to provide efficient, on-demand, context-aware matching of customer requests to nomadic micro businesses as well as small and medium businesses having a mobile workforce. Presence, in the context of BusinessFinder, is not simply limited to phone location and device status, but also encompasses dynamic attributes of vendors (both "mobile" and "static"), …

Changing Transitions To Adulthood In Vietnam's Remote Northern Uplands: A Focus On Ethnic Minority Youth And Their Families, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Hac Van Vinh, Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Vietnam’s rapid economic growth has provided young Vietnamese new opportunities unheard of in their parents’ generation. This is, however, not the case for ethnic minority youth. Many of them are among the poorest, least healthy, and least educated. Ethnic minorities, who tend to live in remote mountainous areas, account for 15 percent of Vietnam’s 84 million total population and, according to a recent estimate, 61 percent of them are poor. Evidence suggests that despite recent efforts of the Government of Vietnam in promoting poverty reduction in remote areas, a majority of ethnic minorities have not yet experienced positive change, contrary …
