Health Perceptions Of Low-Income, Immigrant Spanish-Speaking Latinas In The United States., Donna Hartweg, Christina Isabelli Jan 2007

Health Perceptions Of Low-Income, Immigrant Spanish-Speaking Latinas In The United States., Donna Hartweg, Christina Isabelli

Scholarship

The health outcomes and health practices of immigrant Latinas tend to decrease with acculturation to U.S. culture. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate health perceptions of first- and second generation, low-income, Spanish-speaking women from Mexico and Central America to learn their views of health and also to identify any differences between subcultures. This investigation was the first phase of a larger study to understand the relationship of physical activity to health, as Latinas define it. Seven focus groups were conducted in Spanish with women, ages 25 to 64, by country of origin. Fifteen themes emerged, with more …

Reducing The Social Exclusion Of Girls, Kelly Hallman, Eva Roca Jan 2007

Reducing The Social Exclusion Of Girls, Kelly Hallman, Eva Roca

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Across the globe, girls are systematically excluded from participation in social, economic, and political life. The absence of girls in these arenas has implications not only for the young women themselves but also for society as a whole, exacerbating poverty and perpetuating disparities in health, education, and economic achievement. Internationally, this marginalization makes it difficult or impossible for some countries to achieve society-wide goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals identified by the United Nations as benchmarks to reduce poverty. For a number of years, the Population Council has been studying the causes and effects of girls’ social exclusion in …

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Eyes Open, Sharon G. Feldman Jan 2007

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Eyes Open, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The last time I saw Agustin Gómez-Arcos was July of 1997. He was in the midst of an extended summer sojourn at the home of his friends Miguel and Pilar in Tarragona. I remember wandering with him through the streets of this Catalan coastal city, accompanied by Miguel and Pilar's young sons. With Agustín as our guide we toured the city's Roman ruins, and he showed us his favorite mosaics at the local archeological museum. Agustín, as I remember him, was filled with vitality, delighting in the everyday activities of summer, buying fresh strawberries and tomatoes at an outdoor market …

Exploring The Role Of Technology In The Educational Resilience Of African American Male Students, Reginald Dennis Leseane Jan 2007

Exploring The Role Of Technology In The Educational Resilience Of African American Male Students, Reginald Dennis Leseane

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

African American males, as a group, are labeled at-risk of not acquiring the basic academic and social skills needed to function in todays society. Many of these students simply drop out of school and later find themselves incarcerated in the prison system of America. Educational resilience has been identified as a key component of students that stay in school and participate in their learning. This mixed method study explores what role technology, used in educational setting, plays in the educational resilience and community formation of African American males. The study revolves around a technology infused, three phase intervention for twenty …

The Role Of Meaning In Past-Tense Inflection: Evidence From Polysemy And Denominal Derivation, Shoba Bandi-Rao, Gregory L. Murphy Jan 2007

The Role Of Meaning In Past-Tense Inflection: Evidence From Polysemy And Denominal Derivation, Shoba Bandi-Rao, Gregory L. Murphy

Publications and Research

Although English verbs can be either regular (walk-walked) or irregular (sing-sang), “denominal verbs” that are derived from nouns, such as the use of the verb ring derived from the noun a ring, take the regular form even if they are homophonous with an existing irregular verb: The soldiers ringed the city rather than *The soldiers rang the city. Is this regularization due to a semantic difference from the usual verb, or is it due to the application of the default rule, namely VERB + -ed suffix? To gain a new source of insight into …

Anasazi (Pre-Columbian Native-American) Migrations During The Middle-12th And Late-13th Centuries – Were They Drought Induced?, Larry Benson, Kenneth Petersen, John Stein

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Severe droughts in the middle-12th and late-13th centuries appear to have affected Anasazi (pre-Columbian Native American) populations. During the first drought most of the great houses in the central San Juan Basin were vacated; the second drought resulted in the abandonment of the Four Corners region. During the first drought, villages may not have been completely abandoned. The multi-year drought periods probably were characterized by reductions in both winter and summer precipitation. Maize is dependent on winter precipitation for its germination and initial growth and on summer (monsoonal) precipitation for its continued growth. Reductions in precipitation are hypothesized to have …

Nathalie Sarraute: Tropisms And The Drama Of Logos, Nipaporn Tirasait Jan 2007

Nathalie Sarraute: Tropisms And The Drama Of Logos, Nipaporn Tirasait

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Nathalie Sarraute created a new style of writing, renouncing the accepted literary forms by discarding conventional ideas about plot, chronology, and characterization. Research in this area has consistently shown that, in Sarraute, language is at the heart of her drama. However, this essay emphasizes that she played with the power of words and silences to make us hear far beyond the social surface of discourse and grasp what is really going on in the minds of the interlocutors. Against the structural linguistics of her time, Sarraute concentrated on every phoneme, every syllable of a word or an expression, testing and …

Areal Typology Of Mainland Southeast Asia: What We Learn From The Wals Maps, Bernard Comrie Jan 2007

Areal Typology Of Mainland Southeast Asia: What We Learn From The Wals Maps, Bernard Comrie

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Mainland Southeast Asia has long been recognized as a classic example of a linguistic area, but earlier characterizations of this language area have typically been intuitive, for instance providing seemingly impressive lists of features known to be shared by Mainland Southeast Asian languages but without considering a list of features on which these languages differ, without explicitly considering the extent to which the features in question are common or rare across the world as a whole. By using the maps in the World Atlas of Language Structures, it is possible to build up a more structured assessment of the extent …

Looking Forward: Toward An Understanding Of The Nature And Definition Of It Acceptance, Andrew Schwarz, Wynn Chin Jan 2007

Looking Forward: Toward An Understanding Of The Nature And Definition Of It Acceptance, Andrew Schwarz, Wynn Chin

Faculty Publications

In the past two decades the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has successfully catalyzed a large number of studies related to IT usage or intentions toward that usage. However, we argue that the focus of these studies has been on a narrow aspect of usage (typically, extent or frequency of use). Moreover, we suggest that, these studies implicitly include the notion that "IT acceptance" be construed as simply the relationship between antecedent factors such as perceived usefulness and ease of use that target or predict that particular type of intention connected to amount of IT usage. Rather than continuing studies for …

Estimating Guard Labor, Arjun Jayadev Jan 2007

Estimating Guard Labor, Arjun Jayadev

Economics Faculty Publication Series

As a background paper to Jayadev and Bowles (2006), this paper provides details on our measure of guard labor as we measure these in labor units. Data from the United States indicate a significant increase in its extent in the U.S. over the period 1890 to the present. Cross-national comparisons show a significant statistical association between income inequality and the fraction of the labor force that is constituted by guard labor, as well as with measures of political legitimacy (inversely) and political conflict.

The Institutional Entrepreneur As Modern Prince: The Strategic Face Of Power In Contested Fields, David Levy, Maureen A. Scully Jan 2007

The Institutional Entrepreneur As Modern Prince: The Strategic Face Of Power In Contested Fields, David Levy, Maureen A. Scully

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

This paper develops a theoretical framework that situates institutional entrepreneurship by drawing from Gramsci’s concept of hegemony to understand the contingent stabilization of organizational fields, and by employing his discussion of the Modern Prince as the collective agent who organizes and strategizes counter-hegemonic challenges. Our framework makes three contributions. First, we characterize the interlaced material, discursive, and organizational dimensions of field structure. Second, we argue that strategy must be examined more rigorously as the mode of action by which institutional entrepreneurs engage with field structures. Third, we argue that institutional entrepreneurship, in challenging the position of incumbent actors and stable …

Cultivating Cultural Workers Through Service Learning In Teacher Education, Melanie Williams Thornton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is the study of cultivating cultural workers through service learning in teacher education. The five participants Kathy (European American), Denise (African American), Alberto (Hispanic American), McKenzie (African American), and Zena (African American) were pre-service teachers enrolled in a developmental reading program at a college in Southwest Georgia where service learning was the major conceptual framework. The five participants were born in the mid 1980s, attended high schools in Georgia in the U. S., and entered colleges in the Fall of 2004. My passion for this inquiry is driven by my desire to foster a sense of agency for social …

Showing What We See: Psychoanalytic Vision, Transparency, And Linguistic Pragmatics, Scott Bortle Jan 2007

Showing What We See: Psychoanalytic Vision, Transparency, And Linguistic Pragmatics, Scott Bortle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the possibilities that pragmatic linguistic analytic methods might have for psychoanalysis, both in the latter's attempts to establish itself as an empirically grounded endeavor and in its understanding of its own theoretical constructs. I begin with a discussion of some of the troubles psychoanalysis has had in legitimizing itself in the eyes of its peers since in inception, suggesting that a closer relationship with already-established sociolinguistic sciences (i.e. pragmatic analysis of linguistic interaction) may aid in its promotion.

I then describe how these methods have already been taken up within the field of psychology in the study …

The purpose of this study is to determine if there are increased benefits in a looping instructional delivery system, as it pertains to academic progress, retention rates, and special education placements. Specifically, the study determined if there was a significant difference between students involved in a looping instructional model as compared to those not participating in a looping model. The target population of this study consisted of students looping and non-looping in third, fifth, and eighth grades, who attended rural elementary schools located in central Pennsylvania. The students would have attended the districts between the years of 1999-2005. PSSA scaled …

Utilizing Environmental Factors And Basic Principles Of Pragmaticism To Establish A Theoretical Framework For Integrating Learning Object Based Instruction (Lobi) Into K-12 Instructional Practice, Alex Stone Jan 2007

Utilizing Environmental Factors And Basic Principles Of Pragmaticism To Establish A Theoretical Framework For Integrating Learning Object Based Instruction (Lobi) Into K-12 Instructional Practice, Alex Stone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is a critical theoretical analysis. Its basic premise is that several seemingly intractable issues exist that interfere with the implementation of learning object based instruction (LOBI) in the K-12 online learning environment. The purpose of this study is to identify these issues, and then critique each one individually in order to initiate a discourse that will ultimately facilitate the implementation of LOBI into K-12 public schools. Twelve issues are identified and then individually critiqued. The overriding philosophical influence that drives this study is pragmaticism as presented by C.S. Peirce and basic principles of that particular philosophy are utilized …

Situating The Word: The Significance Of Christian Space For Evangelism, Laceye Warner Jan 2007

Situating The Word: The Significance Of Christian Space For Evangelism, Laceye Warner

The Asbury Journal

With Protestant denominational membership declining steadily, and at times dramatically, since the 1960s, numerous local churches eagerly search for ways to attract new members. In efforts to reverse this trend, or at least slow it down, many have turned to techniques more informed by market logic and capitalist ideologies than the triune God revealed in biblical texts. One such technique insists upon creating "gathering spaces" with little if any evidence of Christian identity. Not even the nomenclature (e.g. "gathering space" instead of "worship space" or "sanctuary") indicates the nature of the purposes intended for these spaces. Many conclude the more …
