The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane Jan 2007

The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane

Articles

There is a wealth of international research on the transition from preschool to school from a range of perspectives. Following on from such research, the issue of transition is emerging as an important new construct in early childhood care and education (ECCE), with a transition-to-school framework replacing the construct of school readiness as a focus of research interest. There has been limited research into transition practices in Ireland and this study is the first comprehensive research looking at this area from an Irish perspective1. Phase I of this study involved conducting a questionnaire on the transition from preschool to formal …

Content Analysis Of Computer Conferencing Transcripts, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2007

Content Analysis Of Computer Conferencing Transcripts, Roisin Donnelly

Papers, presentations and other resources

As conferencing tools become an increasingly common feature in students’ experience, tutors need to have an understanding of how these tools facilitate the formation and maintenance of collaborative learning communities. Inevitably the pursuit of this understanding requires some form of analysis of the interactions involved. This analysis of the written transcripts, created by students during computer mediated conferencing (CMC), invariably takes the form of a systematic content analysis. For small-scale work the analysis can be undertaken manually but when the volume is large, as might arise from courses delivered wholly online or in a blended learning approach for example, some …

Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone Jan 2007

Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to design an early childhood social studies curriculum that integrated the use of children's literature, to be used in early childhood classrooms. Listening to and reading stories about social studies topics helps students to see the importance of various social studies issues and will allow them to connect personally with the theme by completing a wide range of related activities. National and state standards require students to understand many social studies concepts and using children's literature as a vehicle for learning the required standards can help students see the idea that social studies relates …

María Lugone's Work As A Human Rights Idea(L), Berta E. Hernández-Truyol, Mariana Ribeiro

UF Law Faculty Publications

The work of Maria Lugones can be utilized to focus on the same ideas of human reality articulated in the human rights framework. She engages the complexity of humans -- the indivisibility of their identity components -- through her concepts of hybridity/multidimensionality. Similarly, Lugones captures the human need for self-determination -- a right embedded in the human rights framework -- in her work on autonomy, agency, and self-care. Finally, her quest for an antisubordination ideal, like the human rights mandate for equality and nondiscrimination, comes to life in her call for the recognition of and respect for the equality of …

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2007

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article argues for a phenomenological and theological perspective of psychosis. It draws especially upon Levinas’ philosophy as a way of looking at psychosis and responding with compassion. It aims to show that the world of psychosis parallels the Levinas’ negative characterisation of both ontology and the categories of objectivity, presence and Being. This suggests that the language of ontology itself holds insights into the experience of psychosis and perhaps further that the language of alterity (otherness) could be a possible response to it. Psychosis should not be understood as a ‘psychological problem’, but rather as an altered state of …

Quiet, Do Not Disturb: Prying Open The Door To Examine Our Worlds Of Testing And Assessment, Amma Akrofi, Carole Janisch, Mellinee Lesley, Robin Griffith, Xiaoming Liu

Essays in Education

Teacher educators recount their personal experiences related to testing and assessment. Through the examination of these experiences stemming from collegial conversations, the individuals have come to better understand the issues and challenges their university students, preservice and inservice teachers, will face in their classroom settings. Along with theory and research, the realities encountered by these individuals become “course capital.” The content of their current and future university literacy courses and assessment courses reflects their renewed emphasis on responsive and child-centered instruction as opposed to the untoward focus on testing.

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor Jan 2007

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor

Theses and Dissertations

In reaction to criticisms of existing strain theories, Agnew (1992) developed General Strain Theory, and in doing so moved toward micro-level conceptions of strain. A return to the cultural concepts found in traditional strain theories may provide a more complete examination of delinquency/criminality, as it would incorporate the influence that culture has on rates of delinquency/criminality among certain groups in American society. This thesis adds to the knowledge base of criminological thought through the creation of a new strain theory. Sociocultural Strain Theory (SST) may provide a better explanation of delinquency/criminality, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities, by taking into consideration cultural …

Electronic Media And The Novice-Level Esl Textbook, Jacob Selz Brown Jan 2007

Electronic Media And The Novice-Level Esl Textbook, Jacob Selz Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The past decade had seen a re-evaluation in both foreign language, and English as a Second/Foreign Language, instruction methods due to the new technology available to aide in this instruction. While different institutions have access to different levels of technology, the adoption of basic technology for the classroom will eventually happen in the entire developed world. The purpose of this thesis is to wed the new technology available to a traditional textbook. It offers guided instruction to help a facilitator who may have never taught English as a Second/Foreign Language before, along with the actual electronic media needed to supplement …

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington Jan 2007

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington

Publications

Considerable attention has been paid in the CA literature to the glossing practices through which participants in conversation formulate who they are, what they are talking about, where the things they are talking about are located, and so forth. There are, of course, gestural glossing practices as well. For any concept or category presented gesturally, however, there is a range of possibilities from which a particular formulation may be adopted on any actual occasion of use. Identifying alternative formulations serves as a useful analytic exercise for exploring the pragmatic consequences of a produced gesture. In our own research, we have …

The Ties That Bind: Asian American Communities Without ''Ethnic Spaces" In Southeast Michigan, Barbara W. Kim Jan 2007

The Ties That Bind: Asian American Communities Without ''Ethnic Spaces" In Southeast Michigan, Barbara W. Kim

Ethnic Studies Review

According to the 2000 census, over 12 million Asian Americans, almost 70 percent of them either immigrants who came to the U.S. after 1970 or their children, comprised an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population that was more regionally dispersed throughout the U.S. than ever before. (Lai and Arguelles, 2003). Despite these transitions and increasing heterogeneity, discourses about Asian American communities have focused on ethnic enclaves such as Chinatowns, Koreatowns, and Little Saigons where coethnic residents, businesses, services, institutions and organizations exist and interact in urban or suburban physical spaces of the bicoastal United States (Fong, 1994; Li, 1999; Zhou and …

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander Jan 2007

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Writing is a complex cognitive skill, a technology for capturing speech whose forms and conventions began in the dawn of civilization and were in place and stable by the Middle Ages. Writing and reading are the foundation of literacy, fundamental to success in school and in the adult world. No comprehensive theory of composition guides the teaching of writing, although historically two approaches have been favored: writing as a skill acquired through the memorization and recognition of principles of grammar and usage, and more recently, writing as a process of recursive strategies of pi arming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. …

An Analysis Of The Stereotypes Of Preacher’S Kids And Its Application On Their Spouses, Tara J. Allman Jan 2007

An Analysis Of The Stereotypes Of Preacher’S Kids And Its Application On Their Spouses, Tara J. Allman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to discover the results of the effects of stereotypes and under what conditions certain stereotypes occur. The focus of this study is to examine stereotypes connected to the children of a Protestant minister and the spouses of those children. Ethnographic interviews and surveys show that the stereotype does exist in two distinct ways. Children of ministers are expected to either be rebellious hellions or they are expected to be perfect role models. The stereotypes affect the respondents more as children and teenagers than as adults unless as an adult the child still attends the …

Discovering The Logic Of Legal Reasoning, Vern R. Walker Jan 2007

Discovering The Logic Of Legal Reasoning, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Review

The rule of law rests on the quality of legal reasoning. The rule of law requires that similar cases should be decided similarly, that each case should be decided on its merits, and that decision-making processes should comply with applicable rules of procedure and evidence. Making the reasoning behind such decision-making transparent and open to scrutiny shifts the decisions away from mere subjective preference and toward objective rationale. An important means, therefore, of achieving the rule of law is articulating and evaluating the various elements of legal reasoning-the reasoning involved in interpreting constitutions, statutes, and regulations, in balancing fundamental principles …

The Effect Of Celebrity-Status On Juror Decision-Making, Mark Skowronski Jan 2007

The Effect Of Celebrity-Status On Juror Decision-Making, Mark Skowronski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Reported frequently in the popular press is a public perception that juries hold celebrities to a different legal standard. This study tested this hypothesis by presenting paiticipants with a trial transcript of a personal injury lawsuit in which the defendant was either a famous male actor or a comparable non-celebrity. Also tested was the hypothesis that the presence of a celebrity would render “jurors” more susceptible to heuristic- processing of trial information. Some participants were informed that the location of the accident was the estate of a famous male actor while for others the estate had non- celebrity ownership. It …

"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring Jan 2007

"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

David Mamet's ’style is remarkably minimal; there is little in the way of stage direction and his dialogue is often a staccato vernacular. At the same time, within the apparently loose frameworks of his plays lie the seeds of their own destruction: Mamet makes up for the lack of obvious, literal stage direction with the subtle downward spiral of the plot; the coarse frankness of the language depicts worlds nearly devoid of - or at least rapidly losing - their sense of morality or whatever implicit ideas and ideals are central to maintaining the appearance of the status quo. Whether …

Tienen Ventajas Cognitivas Los Bilingües Sobre Los Monolingües?, Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
