Acquisition Of Tense In Xhosa: The Long And The Short Of It, Sandile Gxilishe, Jill De Villiers, Peter A. De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

The purpose of the present paper it so determine when Xhosa-speaking children master the morphology of tense. Specifically, we ask when Xhosa-speaking children learn the conditions on the two forms of the Present and Recent Past tenses, namely the long and the short forms. Despite the fact that there are complex grammatical conditions on which form is appropriate in a sentence, the paper will demonstrate that young children can attend to these grammatical conditions.

On Guessing Points And Naming Stars: Epistemological Origins Of John’S Christological Tensions (Chapter In The Gospel Of St. John And Christian Theology), Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Theological and biblical studies have historically developed hand in hand, and John’s distinctive Christology has long been at the center of that relationship. Within John the humanity and divinity of Jesus converge, as do the Son’s equality with — and subordination to — the Father. Likewise, embellished and existentialized appraisals of Jesus’ signs, present and futuristic eschatology, universalistic and particularistic soteriology, pro- and anti-Jewish sentiments, and apparent free-will and deterministic motifs pervade the Johannine text among other tensions as well. From the patristic era to the modern age, John’s christological tensions have intrigued and challenged theologians and exegetes alike. Indeed, …

Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (Siop) : A Model For English Language Learners, Edith L. Bakley

Graduate Research Papers

With so many second language learners entering our public schools, it is imperative that educators prepare themselves with training and strategies to best meet the needs of these students. The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, or SIOP Model, has been developed for the purpose of instructing English Language Learners (ELL) in mainstream classrooms and bestow effective methods for teaching all content areas, while promoting fluency of the English language. In this literature review, the components involved in the SIOP Model will be examined as well as the effects it has on second language learners and their ability with language fluency.

Orality And Literacy 25 Years Later, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2007

Orality And Literacy 25 Years Later, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Given the influence of the series and particularly of Orality and Literacy—“Ong’s most widely known book; translated into 11 other languages” (Farrell, n.d.)—this issue of COMMUNICATION RESEARCH TRENDS looks back at Orality and Literacy: the book, its reception, and its subsequent use in communication studies. Ong’s work certainly influenced more than communication, but to attempt to review all of that runs well beyond the possibility of a focused review. However, TRENDS will attempt to indicate the scope of the influence of Orality and Literacy with several bibliographies. And so, this issue also includes a (most likely incomplete) citation bibliography as …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study was prepared for the National Park Service to serve as documentation of the cultural significance of Yellowstone buffalo to two American Indian cultural groups, the Nez Perce and the Lakota Sioux, and of the 1999 Buffalo Walk and accompanying ceremony that took place within the boundary of the park. Both Lakota Sioux and Nez Perce peoples had leadership roles in the Buffalo Walk, which was a benchmark event in the history of the park and of Yellowstone buffalo management. Participants in the Buffalo Walk walked and rode more than 500 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota to the …

Silent Cowboys And Verbose Detectives: Masculinity As Rhetoric In Wister, Hammett, And Chandler, Maria Carla Nissi Jan 2007

Silent Cowboys And Verbose Detectives: Masculinity As Rhetoric In Wister, Hammett, And Chandler, Maria Carla Nissi

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the early part of the twentieth century, popular fiction and film in the form of Westerns and the noir detective story cultivated brands of masculinity through archetypal male characters. This project aims to propose and investigate the existence of a countervailing tradition between the language-resistant cowboy figure and his more verbally-inclined successor, the detective fiction hero. Chapter One deconstructs the Virginian’s silence in the original film version of Owen Wister’s novel The Virginian, and demonstrates a male aversion to language as a tool for guarding masculinity against the modernization and feminization of the West. The onslaught of modernization that …

The Word And The Law, James B. White Jan 2007

The Word And The Law, James B. White

Georgia Law Review

The Word and the Law is an extraordinary combination of law, personal statement, literary criticism, and theology. In a sense its central question is whether it is possible to have a life in the law that is good, and the answer is yes-yes, though not at all easy. I have often suggested it as reading to students who are worried about the profession they have chosen, and they frequently return to me with deep thanks for the introduction. Milner's commitment throughout is not to abstraction or theory or generalization, but to particular realities. Partly for this reason he begins the …

Liberated Jokes: Sexual Humor In All-Female Groups, Janet Bing Jan 2007

Liberated Jokes: Sexual Humor In All-Female Groups, Janet Bing

English Faculty Publications

Females have formerly been under-represented in jokes. Many scholars have claimed that joke making is primarily a male activity, particularly in the domain of sexual jokes. In this paper, I discuss sexual jokes that women share with each other both in all-female groups and by e-mail. After reviewing some widely held assumptions about women and jokes, I explore liberated women's jokes, including their structure, use of stereotypes, and subversive ideas. Finally, I discuss why humor theory is incomplete without the inclusion of a female perspective and suggest that women should tell more jokes.

Second Amendment Incorporation Through The Fourteenth Amendment Privileges Or Immunities And Due Process Clauses, Michael Anthony Lawrence Jan 2007

Second Amendment Incorporation Through The Fourteenth Amendment Privileges Or Immunities And Due Process Clauses, Michael Anthony Lawrence

Missouri Law Review

The Second Amendment, alternately maligned over the years as the black sheep of the constitutional family and praised as a palladium of the liberties of a republic, should be recognized by the United States Supreme Court to apply to the several States through the Fourteenth Amendment privileges or immunities clause or, alternatively, through the due process clause. This article suggests that the issue of Second Amendment incorporation presents a useful contemporary mechanism for the Court to revive the longdormant Fourteenth Amendment privileges or immunities clause. Such judicial recognition of the clause is necessary to respect the Framers' vision, as inspired …

Generating And Presenting String Frequency Measurements Of Project Gutenberg Texts, Ronald P. Reck Jan 2007

Generating And Presenting String Frequency Measurements Of Project Gutenberg Texts, Ronald P. Reck

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The electronic age has increased the range of human capabilities to such an extent that the expectations about appropriate empirical linguistic analysis are changing. A hundred years ago, linguistics was largely an empirical manual process that produced information intended for humans. Today, the world is different as inexpensive computing power and the prevalence of information in electronic format encourages that, whenever possible, information be processed by automated and scalable means and the results be usable and understandable by computers. Creating sustainable and usable observations is best achieved through a standards-based approach that meets long term persistence and usability goals. This …

Differentiated Instruction: The Effect On Student Achievement In An Elementary School, Patricia A. Koeze Jan 2007

Differentiated Instruction: The Effect On Student Achievement In An Elementary School, Patricia A. Koeze

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differentiated instruction had an effect on student achievement. The researcher sought to answer two research questions “Does differentiated instruction have an impact on student achievement?” and “Are there components of differentiated instruction that have a greater impact on student achievement than others?”

The study followed a mixed method design and consisted of two parts. First, a quantitative analysis of test scores from the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) and teacher and student survey results were analyzed as a means to outline broad relationships from the data. Results from the quantitative findings …

Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning And Action Processes For Social Change And Sustainability : The Case Of A Regional Food System Effort In The Pacific Northwest, Janet Michelle Hammer Jan 2007

Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning And Action Processes For Social Change And Sustainability : The Case Of A Regional Food System Effort In The Pacific Northwest, Janet Michelle Hammer

Dissertations and Theses

Multi-Stakeholder Collaborative Learning and Action (MCLA) is defined as a type of multi-stakeholder process that convenes diverse system members for the purpose of increasing individual and system knowledge and facilitating individual and collaborative activity supportive of movement toward a shared vision or goal. Despite increased theoretical and practitioner attention to the topic, questions remain regarding what reasonably to expect from MCLA processes and how best to design them. Further, little research has addressed the assertion that certain MCLA processes can facilitate domain development. Addressing these questions, this case study applies quantitative and qualitative methods to the analysis of two components …

Semantic Extension Of The Verb Of Breaking In Thai And Japanese, Kingkarn Thepkanjana, Satoshi Uehara Jan 2007

Semantic Extension Of The Verb Of Breaking In Thai And Japanese, Kingkarn Thepkanjana, Satoshi Uehara

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The fact that a lexical item has semantic variations when combined with other linguistic elements is a central issue in lexical semantics. A number of researchers claim that a lexical item has one basic meaning, and that other extended meanings are triggered in context by a process whereby the semantic structure of the lexical item is adjusted in certain details so that it is semantically compatible with its neighboring lexical items. This paper aims to examine how this process actually works as it applies to a transitive verb occurring with subject and object arguments. A study of the Thai transitive …

The 2005 Year's Work In Linguistics In Thailand, Pranee Kullavanijaya Jan 2007

The 2005 Year's Work In Linguistics In Thailand, Pranee Kullavanijaya

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

A study of Thai linguistics works in 2005 shows that most are M.A. theses and doctoral dissertations done by Thai students in five universities in Thailand and a few universities in the U.S.. and the U.K.. Only three works analyse foreign languages, while the rest investigate the Bangkok Thai dialect. Five main areas are identified: sound and orthography, sociolinguistics, utterance semantics, lexical semantics and syntax-semantic interface. More works focus on the last two areas. With regard to the frameworks used in the analyses, pragmatics, discourse, and speech acts are found most often. Several topics such as village names, politeness, and …

We Need Inquire Further: Normative Sterotypes, Hasidic Jews, And The Civil Rights Act Of 1866, William Kaplowitz Jan 2007

We Need Inquire Further: Normative Sterotypes, Hasidic Jews, And The Civil Rights Act Of 1866, William Kaplowitz

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

According to modern Supreme Court opinions, The Civil Rights Act of 1866 prohibits only "discrimination [against members of protected groups] solely because of their ancestry or ethnic characteristics." The Court refers to this type of discrimination as 'racial animus.' In the 1987 case Shaare Tefila Congregation v. CobbJews were recognized as a protected ethnic group under these statutes, but the Supreme Court also reaffirmed that The Civil Rights Act only prohibits 'ethnic' or 'ancestral' discrimination. The Act does not encompass religious discrimination. Yet, despite the Supreme Court's rulings, the district courts held that both Rabbi LeBlanc-Sternberg's and Mr. Singers' allegations …
