A Critical Theory Perspective On Faculty Development, Stephen D. Brookfield Jan 2007

A Critical Theory Perspective On Faculty Development, Stephen D. Brookfield

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This chapter argues that critical theory implies a number of conceptions and practices of teaching, and it applies a critical theory perspective to conducting faculty development. It speculates on how faculty development might be organized according to some insights drawn from critical theory, and it reviews the chief reasons why teachers resist engaging with this perspective.

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Of Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Of Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Is an accommodation "reasonable" under the Americans with Disabilities Act if and only if the benefits are roughly proportional to the costs? How should benefits and costs be assessed? Should courts ask how much disabled employees are willing to pay to obtain the accommodation, or instead how much they would have to be paid to forego the accommodation? How should stigmatic or expressive harms be valued? This Essay, written for a celebration of the work of Judge Richard A. Posner, engages these questions in a discussion of an important opinion in which Judge Posner denied accommodations involving the lowering of …

What Good Is The Social Model Of Disability?, Adam M. Samaha Jan 2007

What Good Is The Social Model Of Disability?, Adam M. Samaha

Articles

A social model of disability relates a person's disadvantage to the combination of personal traits and social setting. The model appears to have had a profound impact on academics, politics, and law since the 1970s. Scholars have debated the model's force but its limitations are more severe than have been recognized. This Article claims that the model, like all social construction accounts, has essentially no policy implications. Its impact depends on normative commitments developed by some other logic, such as membership in the disability rights movement or adherence to versions of libertarian, utilitarian, or egalitarian theory that are triggered by …

A Century Of Juvenile Justice: A Work In Progress Or A Revolution That Failed?, Barry C. Feld Jan 2007

A Century Of Juvenile Justice: A Work In Progress Or A Revolution That Failed?, Barry C. Feld

Articles

A century ago, Progressive reformers adopted a more modem construction of childhood as a developmental period of innocence, dependence, and vulnerability. They embraced a more scientific understanding of social control - positive criminology - and tried to identify the causes of crime and to treat, rather than to punish, offenders. Reformers combined the new vision of childhood with new insights into criminality to create a judicial-welfare alternative to the adult criminal process. Jurisdiction over dependent as well as delinquent children reflected juvenile courts' broader role as a child-saving welfare agency and not simply a "junior" criminal court.'

The Perpetual Anxiety Of Living Constitutionalism, Ethan J. Leib Jan 2007

The Perpetual Anxiety Of Living Constitutionalism, Ethan J. Leib

Faculty Scholarship

It certainly seems like the originalists are winning. Professor Jack Balkin--finding that he couldn't beat 'em--joined them. Living constitutionalists used to turn to Balkin as a reliable advocate; he recently wrote “we are all living constitutionalists now.” But Balkin has forsaken them. Losing such an important advocate might be a sign that what some once deemed the “ascendant” and dominant theory in constitutional interpretation is on the decline. Still, don't count living constitutionalism out of the game just yet--and don't think one can embrace Balkin's approach and a true living constitutionalism at the same time.

My Poetry, My Therapy : An Explanation On The Development Of Poetry Throughout History And The Use Of Poetry As An Emotional Release, Heather E. Linton Jan 2007

My Poetry, My Therapy : An Explanation On The Development Of Poetry Throughout History And The Use Of Poetry As An Emotional Release, Heather E. Linton

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis is about my poetry and how I use poetry as an emotional release. I will debate the notion that self-published poetry is not as prestigious as works published by university or commercial presses. To secure this debate I will compare my poetry to that of famous poets, such as Shakespeare, Dickinson, and Rilke and show the different ways poetry can be approached and judged. Then I will use samples of my poetry and relate them to psychological theories. Theories related to grief and self-actualization will show the gravity of my poetry. This, in tum, will show how poetry …

Differentiating Livelihood Strategies Among The Luo And Kipsigis People In Western Kenya , Mary Nyasimi, Lorna Michael Butler, Lee Burras, Hsain Ilahiane, Richard Schultz, Jan Flora Jan 2007

Differentiating Livelihood Strategies Among The Luo And Kipsigis People In Western Kenya , Mary Nyasimi, Lorna Michael Butler, Lee Burras, Hsain Ilahiane, Richard Schultz, Jan Flora

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa are under increasing adaptive pressure resulting from decline in the quality of land resources. To increase food, generate income, and safeguard against risks and shocks, families are engaging in multiple livelihood strategies. This study was conducted to: 1) evaluate livelihood strategies; 2) examine the dynamic diversification process in the agrarian and non-agrarian continuum; and 3) investigate how type and availability of assets influences choice of a livelihood strategy. Results from our investigation in western Kenya suggest that as land is subjected to degradation, there is a shift in the type of assets that families can …

A Perception Study On The Third Tone In Mandarin Chinese, Rui Cao, Priyankoo Sarmah Jan 2007

A Perception Study On The Third Tone In Mandarin Chinese, Rui Cao, Priyankoo Sarmah

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This experimental study examines the role of the shape of the pitch contour in the perception of the Mandarin Chinese tone 3.2 A set of stimuli was constructed by varying the pitch of tone 3 on two conditions: (1) varying the duration of the dip (or turning point) and (2) varying the timing of the turning point (duration of the slope). The manipulated pitch contours of tone 3 were presented to the native speakers of Mandarin Chinese in two sets: (a) a set of speech stimuli and (b) a set of non-speech stimuli. The participants of the experiment were asked …

Argument Realization Of Chinese Result And Phase Complements, Han-Chun Huang Jan 2007

Argument Realization Of Chinese Result And Phase Complements, Han-Chun Huang

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This paper discusses result complements and phase complements in Chinese, both of which are postverbal elements. Despite their surface similarity, they are different with respect to argument realization. While the result complements allow complicated argument realization (in terms of semantic host, verbal transitivity, and subcategorization of objects), the phase complements function as lexical aspect markers, or Aktionsarten, and do not participate in argument realization. I adopt a constructional approach, particularly Boas’s (2003) event-frames and linking rules. Inverted causative resultative constructions in Chinese are also discussed. They are strong evidence for “constructional participants” that interact with event participants in determining syntactic …

Valmiki And Hesse: Maya Through The Ages, Kevin Blankinship Jan 2007

Valmiki And Hesse: Maya Through The Ages, Kevin Blankinship

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

The Vedic poet Valmiki could hardly have imagined that, with his discovery of shloka, or poetic meter, and the subsequent advent of literature as a separate aesthetic genre, Hindu notions of reality would lend expression of outrage to war-weary Germans thousands of years later. Or perhaps he did: Brahma’s benediction provided that, “so long as the mountains and rivers . . . stay on the face of the earth / So long will the story of Rama endure / So long will your fame remain.”1

Early And Late Preferences In Relative Clause Attachment In Spanish And Portuguese, Marcus Maia, Eva M. Fernández, Armanda Costa, Maria Do Carmo Lourenço-Gomes Jan 2007

Early And Late Preferences In Relative Clause Attachment In Spanish And Portuguese, Marcus Maia, Eva M. Fernández, Armanda Costa, Maria Do Carmo Lourenço-Gomes

Publications and Research

This study presents new data about the cross-language application of the Late Closure principle (Frazier, 1978), whose universality was put in question by data from Spanish (Cuetos & Mitchell, 1988). Using sentences containing a restrictive relative clause unambiguously modifying the first or the second noun of a complex NP (os cúmplices do ladrão/o cúmplice dos ladrões que fugiram), this study compares the behavior of Brazilian and European Portuguese speakers participating in a self-paced reading task. The data confirm that, in early phases of processing, attachment preferences are driven by a locality principle such as Late Closure. Based on a review …

Balkan Societies Of "Social Men": Transcending Gender Boundaries, Tarifa Jan 2007

Balkan Societies Of "Social Men": Transcending Gender Boundaries, Tarifa

Societies Without Borders

As transgender identities worldwide have begun to receive attention from students of gender and sexuality, a curious Balkan (but more specifically Albanian) tradition of female-to-male transgender ("sworn virgins") surviving to the present day - an obscure and ambiguous theme until recently - is worthy of sociological attention. The "sworn virgin" phenomenon is studied in a larger, ethno-cultural context, zipping through such complicated - and sociologically contentious - notions as patriarchy, blood-feud, destructive entitlement, etc. It is argued that the "sworn virgins" of the Balkans were forced to become "social men," assuming masculine social and family roles, due to specific economic …

Reducing Disparities Beginning In Early Childhood: Short Takes No. 4, Kay Johnson, Suzanne Theberge, Copyright © 2007 By The National Center For Children In Poverty; Columbia University Mailman School Of Public Health Ny

Mickey Leland Center Information Portal

Research shows that many disparities in health and well-being are rooted in early childhood. These disparities reflect gaps in access to services, unequal treatment, adverse congenital health conditions, and exposures in the early years linked to elevated community and family risks.1 Early health risks and conditions can have long-range implications for physical, emotional, and intellectual development as well as health. Their contribution to disparities in health status, disabilities, and educational achievement is well documented.2 But many risks can be addressed in the early years, starting with quality prenatal care and interventions in the earliest stages of life. Thus, literally, reducing …

2007 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State Jan 2007

2007 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

The Department of State is required by law to submit a Report each year to the U.S. Congress on foreign governments’ efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. This Report is the seventh annual TIP Report. It is intended to raise global awareness, to highlight efforts of the international community, and to encourage foreign governments to take effective actions to counter all forms of trafficking in persons.

The U.S. law that guides anti-human trafficking efforts, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, as amended (TVPA), states that the purpose of combating human trafficking is to punish traffickers, to …
