‘Tribes Tlc’: Teacher Education Students’ Perceptions, Richard G. Berlach, Annette Sanders

Education Conference Papers

Tribes TLC is a process rather than a programme per se that aims to facilitate interactive learning and assist in the engendering of a positive classroom climate. Devised in the USA and imported into a number of contexts internationally, uptake in Australia has been considerable. Thirty second and third year Bachelor of Education students undertook the training hosted by Cooloongalup Primary School prior to participating in a ten week practicum. Data pertaining to the Tribes TLC resource was collected prior to the training phase, post training, and at the conclusion of the practicum. This paper reports the perceptions of students …

Cultural Diversity In The Southern Caddo Region, James E. Corbin Jan 2007

Cultural Diversity In The Southern Caddo Region, James E. Corbin

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The earliest expression of Caddo culture in the southern portion of the Southern Caddo region is well known. That Alto phase Caddo culture had any effect on coeval societies and the subsequent cultural development in the area cannot be demonstrated. What happened after ca. A.D. 1100 has been much discussed, but the realities of that subsequent cultural development are unknown. It can be argued that what followed was a part of a larger cultural phenomenon of regionalization of societies within the broader Caddoan area. Some researchers have argued that. at least in the extreme southern portion of the Caddo area, …

Administrative and Organizational Studies

This is a report of a developmental research study that aimed to construct and validate an instructional design model that incorporates the theory and practice of multiple intelligences. The study consisted of three phases. In phase one, the theoretical foundations of multiple intelligences and instructional design were examined to guide the development of such model. In phase two the model components were determined and an initial model was constructed. In phase three, the model was reviewed and validated by experts in the field of instructional design through a three-round Delphi study. The result was a revised and validated Multiple Intelligences …

Mapping The New Frontiers Of Private Ordering: Afterword, Martha M. Ertman Jan 2007

Mapping The New Frontiers Of Private Ordering: Afterword, Martha M. Ertman

Faculty Scholarship

Defining the limits of contract is an important project in contemporary contracts scholarship. Professor Ertman’s Afterword to the University of Arizona symposium on Mapping the Frontiers of Private Ordering situates the symposium papers within a larger positive and normative discourse. Suggesting that “private ordering” better describes the current reach of contractual thinking, she contends that, the symposium papers depart from conventional wisdom by examining the upside of private ordering for have-nots. While some of the contributions warn of dangers to employees and other systemically disadvantaged parties from full throttle contractualization, even the protections by the most skeptical scholar fall comfortably …

What Is A Twentieth-Century Constitution?, Peter E. Quint Jan 2007

What Is A Twentieth-Century Constitution?, Peter E. Quint

Faculty Scholarship

At present, almost all of the constitutions in the world are twentieth-century constitutions; indeed, most of them were not adopted until the second half of the twentieth century. Accordingly, the eighteenth-century Constitution of the United States -- which includes the original constitution of 1787-89; the first ten amendments, adopted in 1791; and the Eleventh Amendment, adopted in 1798 -- antedates most other constitutions of the world by at least 150 years. Using the eighteenth-century Constitution of the United States as a form of base-line (a method that may be parochial, but one that I think also has a lot to …

Ruminations On The Past, Present And Future Of International Labor Standards: Empowering Law In The Brave New Economic World, Marley S. Weiss Jan 2007

Ruminations On The Past, Present And Future Of International Labor Standards: Empowering Law In The Brave New Economic World, Marley S. Weiss

Faculty Scholarship

International labor standards are among the oldest international standards pertaining to the conduct of private, as well as public, economic actors. Far from being settled, however, nearly every aspect of the current international labor standards regime is in flux: the role of labor standards in the international legal, economic, political, and social order, as well as in the parallel domestic orders; the modes by which standards are brought into being; the manner and means of their implementation and enforcement; the degree to which they may be binding solely on nation-state parties, and enforceable only at their behest; and the extent …

Baby-Steps Towards Building A Spanglish Language Model, Juan C. Franco, Thamar Solorio Jan 2007

Baby-Steps Towards Building A Spanglish Language Model, Juan C. Franco, Thamar Solorio

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Abstract. Spanglish is the simultaneous use, or alternating of both, traditional Spanish and English within the same conversational event. This interlanguage is commonly used in U.S. populations with large percentages of Spanish speakers. Despite the popularity of this dialect, and the wide spread of automated voice systems, currently there are no spoken dialog applications that can process Spanglish. In this paper we present the first attempt towards creating a Spanglish language model.

Challenges Facing A Complementary-Systems Approach To Abstract And Episodic Speech Perception, Conor T. Mclennan Jan 2007

Challenges Facing A Complementary-Systems Approach To Abstract And Episodic Speech Perception, Conor T. Mclennan

Psychology Faculty Publications

It has been nearly a decade since the publication of Goldinger’s [4] Psych. Review paper in which he presented his episodic theory of lexical access. Moreover, Goldinger’s (and others’) empirical work [3, 14] providing evidence for episodic representations predates the formal presentation of his episodic theory. This is an appropriate time to note how the field has progressed in the past decade with respect to the debate over the nature of lexical representations. As evidenced by the two main papers, the emphasis is no longer on whether there are abstract and/or episodic representations. Instead, the focus is now on the …

This background paper Children’s early learning and development, sets out the theory and research underpinning children’s early learning and development in the Framework for Early Learning. The paper essentially responds to the question - how should we envision and understand the child as a young learner? The paper begins by outlining the context for early childhood care and education in Ireland by referring to our economic and social climate, the increasingly multicultural nature of society and relevant legislation and policy. Drawing on centuries of research, the modern day view of the child is one of him/her being a competent learner, …

The Need For A Speech Corpus, Dermot Campbell, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson Jan 2007

The Need For A Speech Corpus, Dermot Campbell, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Marty Meinardi, Bunny Richardson

Articles

This paper outlines the ongoing construction of a speech corpus for use by applied linguists and advanced EFL/ESL students. The first section establishes the need for improvements in the teaching of listening skills and pronunciation practice for EFL/ESL students. It argues for the need to use authentic native-to-native speech in the teaching/learning process so as to promote social inclusion and contextualises this within the literature, based mainly on the work of Swan, Brown and McCarthy. The second part addresses features of native speech flow which cause difficulties for EFL/ESL students (Brown, Cauldwell) and establishes the need for improvements in the …

Applying The Levels Of Conceptual Interoperability Model In Support Of Integratability, Interoperability, And Composability For System-Of-Systems Engineering, Charles D. Turnitsa

Faculty Bibliography

The Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM) was developed to cope with the different layers of interoperation of modeling & simulation applications. It introduced technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual layers of interoperation and showed how they are related to the ideas of integratability, interoperability, and composability. The model was successfully applied in various domains of systems, cybernetics, and informatics.

Born Of Freedom And Dissent: A Comparative Analysis Of American Antiwar Protest In The First 1,418 Days Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Thomas N. Ratliff

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Cultural aesthetics are the latent effects of human relations informing cognitive schemas as cultural variations of social forms in specific time-space contexts. To understand what conditions produce intra-national conflict during wartime, engagement reactivity between social control mechanisms and antiwar protesters was measured. Hypothesis-1 showed high numbers of arrests were influenced by the type and duration of protest and military presence at protest events during Vietnam, whereas place and size of protest were influential during Iraq. Hypothesis-2 showed that where and how antiwar protests occur has changed. Hypothesis-3 showed that, compared to Vietnam, Iraq antiwar protest has increased initial reactivity-intensity, has …

A Functional Analysis Of English Humanities And Biochemistry Writing With Respect To Teaching University Composition, Joshua Glenn Iddings Jan 2007

A Functional Analysis Of English Humanities And Biochemistry Writing With Respect To Teaching University Composition, Joshua Glenn Iddings

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis examines how writing differs in both English departments and Biochemistry departments in realization at the grammatical, that is, the lexico-grammatical level; and thus, how the differing writing modes are not merely realizations of differences at the lexical level, but the grammar of the texts is affected by the different world perspectives reflected by each discipline. By analyzing the lexico-grammatical realizations in texts produced by professionals in both the English and Biochemistry disciplines, through the analysis of basic writing handbooks which are required reading for many introductory writing students, and through analysis of a survey given to full-time university …

The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman Jan 2007

The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman

Management Faculty Publications

Although knowledge management (KM) has gained worldwide recognition as an important strategic imperative, its integration into academia has lagged. A review of the literature, as well as an examination of information systems (IS) curriculum models, was performed to determine how KM related courses are being integrated. The analysis revealed that KM is still not considered appropriate as an integral component of the undergraduate IS curriculum; rather it is more prevalent in optional courses or those covering advanced topics, and integrated into the curriculum at the graduate level. The sluggish adoption of KM into mainstream academia is countered by an increasing …

The Rhetorical Implications Of Clementia In Cicero’S Caesarian Speeches, Aaron Rozeboom Jan 2007

The Rhetorical Implications Of Clementia In Cicero’S Caesarian Speeches, Aaron Rozeboom

McNair Scholars Journal

Cicero’s Caesarian speeches were delivered in 46-45 B.C. to Caesar after his victories in the Civil War. Caesar faced a number of critical issues as he dealt with the political and social aftermath of the years after 49 B.C., including what to do with the supporters of his enemies. Cicero, preeminent orator and a key political, was well-placed to speak on behalf of these individuals. Clementia, as an intrinsic theme, impinges upon social, political, and linguistic spheres and became a nexus for anxieties and manipulation between the senatorial and plebian orders. This research compares and contrasts the understanding, presentation, and …
