The Czech Émigré Experience Of Return After 1989, Madelaine Hron
The Czech Émigré Experience Of Return After 1989, Madelaine Hron
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
Here at home, we hold no love towards émigrés. We didn’t like them before, and we don’t like them now. Not that we don’t concern ourseles with them, we just simply really don’t like them. Seemingly it’s some kind of tradition here [...] They can go ahead and complain, but since they have no political rights, let them whine, they pose no threat, as long as at home all is quiet.1
This comment by Jiří Bigas, made in his 1998 opinion column aptly titled ‘The Relationship with One’s Own Émigrés is a Test of National Maturity,’ encapsulates some of …

Second Language Acquisition From A Mcneillian Perspective, Gale Stam
Second Language Acquisition From A Mcneillian Perspective, Gale Stam
Faculty Publications
Most second language acquisition research has concentrated on learners’ speech. This paper argues that it is necessary to look at both learners’ speech and gesture in order to better understand second language acquisition. It provides a summary of the second language acquisition process and the types of studies that have been conducted in the field. It discusses how gesture can be used to investigate learners’ thinking for speaking.

Congregations As Systems For Empowering Missional Leadership: A Lutheran Hermeneutic For Leading In Mission, Terri Lynn Martinson Elton
Congregations As Systems For Empowering Missional Leadership: A Lutheran Hermeneutic For Leading In Mission, Terri Lynn Martinson Elton
Doctor of Philosophy Theses
What are the cultural dynamics within a congregational system that are vital to the empowering of missional leadership? Do Lutherans have anything to contribute to the missional church movement in the United States? These two questions were primary for this dissertation and emerged out of two gaps identified in the missional church literature. Seeing congregations as complex, open systems, missional leadership within congregational systems was studied using a grounded theory, qualitative research approach. The five ELCA congregational systems in this study were identified by their peers as excelling in helping their faith community discover their calling as disciples of Jesus …

Linguistic Factors In The Overall Aviation Safety Framework, S. Bourgeois-Bougrine, V. Normier, R. Mollard, O. Ferrante, Y. Pouliquen
Linguistic Factors In The Overall Aviation Safety Framework, S. Bourgeois-Bougrine, V. Normier, R. Mollard, O. Ferrante, Y. Pouliquen
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
Feedback on occurrences and some safety studies prompted ICAO to recommend new language proficiency requirements. This paper focuses on the type of data that influenced this effort to reduce accidents involving the “language barrier”. It also proposes to better define and record the linguistic factors in databases. A literature review on the main linguistic contributory factors to air-ground miscommunications breaks them down into sub-categories. Subsequently, the paper discusses the “language barrier” as a potential “safety barrier”. It seems essential to better track and record these successful safety barriers (or nets) related to human behaviors. They should be expanded through a …

The Effects Of Multimodal Collaboration Technology On Subjective Workload Profiles Of Tactical Air Battle Management Teams, Victor S. Finomore, Benjamin A. Knott, W. Todd Nelson, Scott M. Galster, Robert S. Bolia
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
A tactical air battle management task required a team of two weapons directors, two strike operators, and a tanker operator to communicate with each other in order to coordinate offensive and defensive air attacks, and aerial refuelling. This study compared the impact of two types of communication modalities (Voice or Picture Chat) and the number of enemy targets (4 or 6) on team performance and perceived team workload. Three subjective workload scales were evaluated in their ability to characterize task difficulty, communication demands, and demands of the different team roles. The results are discussed with respects to the descriptive and …
Physical Inclusion Yet Curriculum Exclusion? School Staff Perceptions Of The Curriculum For Students With Learning Disabilities In Mainstream Secondary Schools In Tel Aviv, Israel, Tsafi Timor Ph.D., Neil Burton Ph.D.
Physical Inclusion Yet Curriculum Exclusion? School Staff Perceptions Of The Curriculum For Students With Learning Disabilities In Mainstream Secondary Schools In Tel Aviv, Israel, Tsafi Timor Ph.D., Neil Burton Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
The Israeli education system has, over the past decade, moved towards the adoption of a more inclusive approach to meet the needs of students with identified learning disabilities. As a consequence many more students in the secondary sector (12-18) are now more willing to acknowledge that they require additional support. The main focus of this research was to assess the extent to which school staff perceives that the curriculum in secondary schools is being reasonably adjusted to meet these learning needs. The study examines the views of head teachers, counselors and teachers in five secondary schools in Tel-Aviv area, Israel. …

International Journal of Legal Information
Those who teach ESL students are engaging in wonderful, creative work, which should be shared with the larger legal writing community. This article is designed to begin a conversation through scholarship in this area. This scholarship will encourage legal educators to become more aware of the influence of culture and language on their understanding of the law and they will, in turn, be better teachers. Through this scholarship, all will gain—ESL students, J.D. students, professors, and scholars.

Verbalisers And Visualisers: Cognitive Styles That Are Less Than Equal, R C. Mcewan, S Reynolds
Faculty and Staff Publications - CRI
Over the past thirty years numerous models of cognitive style, varying in complexity and applicability, have been developed. While these models have sparked a vast body of educational research, the results have been equivocal. The models have been widely criticized for their lack of precision and predictability. According to Kozhevnikov, Kosslyn & Sheppard (2005, p 710) “much of the previous work suffered from arbitrary distinctions and overlapping dimensions.” In spite of the criticism, several models of cognitive style survive and continue to stimulate research. Two of these models, the Field Dependent – Field Independence cognitive style and the Reflective-Impulsivity model …
