Conceptualising And Evaluating Teacher Quality: Substantive And Methodological Issues, Lawrence Ingvarson, Ken Rowe Feb 2007

Conceptualising And Evaluating Teacher Quality: Substantive And Methodological Issues, Lawrence Ingvarson, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

Whereas findings from recent research highlight the importance of teacher quality in improving students’ academic performances and experiences of schooling, substantive and methodological issues surrounding the conceptualisation and evaluation of teacher quality are not well- understood. Such deficiencies are particularly evident in claims for ‘findings’ derived from econometric research – especially from those studies that merely employ conceptualisations and proxy ‘measures’ of quality in terms of teachers’ qualifications, experience, and students’ academic outcomes. Moreover, the econometric models fitted to the available, mostly aggregated data, typically fail to conceptualise and ‘measure’ teacher quality in terms of what teachers should know (subject-matter …

Repeated Reading To Improve Oral Reading Fluency, Loretta Lynn Powers Feb 2007

Repeated Reading To Improve Oral Reading Fluency, Loretta Lynn Powers

All Graduate Projects

The focus of this project was to review the available research on repeated reading as a method of improving a student's oral reading fluency (ORF), to determine its contribution to the reading process, and to create an implementation guide for middle school teachers to use in their language arts classroom. The results of the research show that there is a need for effective repeated reading instruction. Including this instruction at the middle school level will provide tremendous benefits for students. Repeated reading is an effective way to expose students to short, interesting, fictional and non-fictional texts. The project includes a …

Profiles Of Asian American Subgroups In Massachusetts: Filipino Americans In Massachusetts, Richard Chu Feb 2007

Profiles Of Asian American Subgroups In Massachusetts: Filipino Americans In Massachusetts, Richard Chu

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

The study of Filipino Americans in the United States is both fascinating and important. It is fascinating because, as with most Asian American subgroups, Filipino Americans are highly diverse, displaying a rich contour of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. It is important because they come from a country that was the only major colony of the U.S. in the Pacific. As a consequence of this historical relationship, Filipino Americans now rank as the second most populous Asian American subgroup, and 2006 marked the centennial of the first significant group of contract laborers to be sent to Hawai’i. Despite the important roles …

The Lady In The Looking-Glass: Reflections On The Self In Virginia Woolf, Stephen Howard Feb 2007

The Lady In The Looking-Glass: Reflections On The Self In Virginia Woolf, Stephen Howard

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay addresses Virginia Woolf’s exploration of the concept of the self through reference to a range of her prose writings. In these writings, Woolf questions whether the self is unitary, constant and finally knowable, or fragmented, unstable and inscrutable; whether the self is merged with other people, and constructed from interactions with the world; and whether or not a durable and fixed self-image is a necessary prerequisite for successful social interaction. Woolf’s engagement with the conventions of biography is examined primarily through the lens of two short stories: ‘The Lady in the Looking-Glass’ and ‘An Unwritten Novel.’ I argue …

Rosetta Stones - Deciphering The Real, Jae-Man Cho Feb 2007

Rosetta Stones - Deciphering The Real, Jae-Man Cho

Theses

My MFA thesis show Rosetta Stones - Deciphering the Real, was an investigation of photography in the digital world. I would like to address in this thesis the possibility of using photography to investigate the digital world in which we began to live in not too long ago. I want to show the current new imaging status of photography and the direction it might move in the development of digital technology. Today, art coexists and develops alongside science and technology. The main purpose, as well as the starting point of this thesis, is recognizing that mechanically produced images can have …

Russia, The United States, And The Caucasus, R. Craig Nation Dr. Feb 2007

Russia, The United States, And The Caucasus, R. Craig Nation Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In the post-Soviet period, the Caucasus region has been a source of chronic instability and conflict. Many factors have ensured that the region would become a source of significant international engagement and concern. Conflicting interests that have made Russian-American relations in the region highly competitive are addressed as well as areas of shared priorities and mutual advantage that may provide a foundation for containing conflict and heading off further regional disintegration. However they are resolved, regional issues emerging from the Caucasus will have a significant impact upon the larger climate of U.S.-Russian relations in the years to come.

Understanding Indian Insurgencies: Implications For Counterinsurgency Operations In The Third World, Durga Madhab (John) Mitra Deputy Inspector General Feb 2007

Understanding Indian Insurgencies: Implications For Counterinsurgency Operations In The Third World, Durga Madhab (John) Mitra Deputy Inspector General

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A simple linear model for India has been developed to demonstrate how the degree of inaccessibility of an area, the strength of separate social identity of its population, and the amount of external influence on the area determine the propensity of that area for insurgency. Implications of the Indian model for various aspects of counterinsurgency strategy for the Third World, including economic development, the role of democracy, social and political autonomy, and counterinsurgency operations are discussed. Recommendations for effective counterinsurgency strategy and for long-term stability in these countries are included. India is very complex and provides an ideal window for …

The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett Feb 2007

The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett

Student Work

An intensive writing instruction and assessment preparation program was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in helping students improve their performance on a standardized statewide writing assessment. Following the six-week program, pretest to posttest gains made by 8th-grade students ( N = 74) revealed significant improvement in writing performance on the statewide assessment. As reflected by subject test scores, the control group of 8th-grade students (N = 86) also demonstrated significant pretest to posttest gains. Although posttest statewide writing assessment scores were significant for both groups, Norm Referenced Normal Curve Equivalent posttest measures dipped significantly for both groups. However, the achievement …

A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan Feb 2007

A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan

San Diego Law Review

What I shall argue, more specifically, is that, on the view of traditional Catholic philosophy and theology, we cannot be in a true quandary in law, because - whether we readily admit it or fiercely deny it - we have received, and therefore can make, law. On the traditional Catholic view, it is a fact about who we are that we are capable of making law. While the Catholic tradition denies, then, that we are in an ontic (as opposed to ontological) quandary, it also acknowledges that the mainstream, "meager" ontologies of our making can undermine our resources for making …

The Missing Rhetoric Of Gender In Responses To Abu Ghraib, Alexandra Murphy Feb 2007

The Missing Rhetoric Of Gender In Responses To Abu Ghraib, Alexandra Murphy

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper explores Western responses to the torture inflicted upon Iraqi detainees by U.S. soldiers at the Abu Ghraib facility near Baghdad. More specifically, however, this paper examines responses to photographic representations of this torture, which began to surface in the April of 2004. The analysis that follows engages closely with the status of the photographs as images, arguing that existing critical interpretations fail to account for the particular issues and problems that the visual image presents. Through detailed reference work by Judith Butler and Susan Sontag, this paper will also interrogate the limitations of recent theoretical approaches to the …

Cyberqueers In Taiwan: Locating Histories Of The Margins, Terri He Feb 2007

Cyberqueers In Taiwan: Locating Histories Of The Margins, Terri He

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this paper I direct the focus to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) online communities in Taiwan. On the one hand, I argue that such online communities in Taiwan are worthwhile researching and deserve special academic attention because they touch upon Taiwan’s perpetual difference in the world as a de-facto, thereby questioning how a transnational perspective permanently influences or even changes the way national identity is or is not formulated. On the other, against the backdrop of globalisation, I highlight the fact of under-theorisation of issues and politics of sexuality dissidence in a non-western, non-dominant location and culture such …

Perceived Cultural Importance And Actual Self-Importance Of Values In Cultural Identification, Ching Wan, Chi-Yue Chiu, Kim-Pong Tam, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Siqing Peng Feb 2007

Perceived Cultural Importance And Actual Self-Importance Of Values In Cultural Identification, Ching Wan, Chi-Yue Chiu, Kim-Pong Tam, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Siqing Peng

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Cross-cultural psychologists assume that core cultural values define to a large extent what a culture is. Typically, core values are identified through an actual self-importance approach, in which core values are those that members of the culture as a group strongly endorse. In this article, the authors propose a perceived cultural importance approach to identifying core values, in which core values are values that members of the culture as a group generally believe to be important in the culture. In 5 studies, the authors examine the utility of the perceived cultural importance approach. Results consistently showed that, compared with values …

Human–Robot Interaction: A Survey, Michael A. Goodrich, Alan C. Schultz Feb 2007

Human–Robot Interaction: A Survey, Michael A. Goodrich, Alan C. Schultz

Faculty Publications

Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) has recently received considerable attention in the academic community, in labs, in technology companies, and through the media. Because of this attention, it is desirable to present a survey of HRI to serve as a tutorial to people outside the field and to promote discussion of a unified vision of HRI within the field. The goal of this review is to present a unified treatment of HRI-related problems, to identify key themes, and discuss challenge problems that are likely to shape the field in the near future. Although the review follows a survey structure, the goal of …

Speech Signal Enhancement Through Adaptive Wavelet Thresholding, Michael T. Johnson, Xiaolong Yuan, Yao Ren Feb 2007

Speech Signal Enhancement Through Adaptive Wavelet Thresholding, Michael T. Johnson, Xiaolong Yuan, Yao Ren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper demonstrates the application of the Bionic Wavelet Transform (BWT), an adaptive wavelet transform derived from a non-linear auditory model of the cochlea, to the task of speech signal enhancement. Results, measured objectively by Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) and Segmental SNR (SSNR) and subjectively by Mean Opinion Score (MOS), are given for additive white Gaussian noise as well as four different types of realistic noise environments. Enhancement is accomplished through the use of thresholding on the adapted BWT coefficients, and the results are compared to a variety of speech enhancement techniques, including Ephraim Malah filtering, iterative Wiener filtering, and spectral …
