Possible Stimulation Of Anti-Tumor Immunity Using Repeated Cold Stress: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk, Sasa Radoja Jan 2007

Possible Stimulation Of Anti-Tumor Immunity Using Repeated Cold Stress: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk, Sasa Radoja

Radiation Oncology Publications

Background The phenomenon of hormesis, whereby small amounts of seemingly harmful or stressful agents can be beneficial for the health and lifespan of laboratory animals has been reported in literature. In particular, there is accumulating evidence that daily brief cold stress can increase both numbers and activity of peripheral cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells, the major effectors of adaptive and innate tumor immunity, respectively. This type of regimen (for 8 days) has been shown to improve survival of mice infected with intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which would also be consistent with enhanced cell-mediated immunity.

The Effect Of High-Fidelity Manikin-Based Human Patient Simulation On Educational Outcomes In Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Courses, David L. Rodgers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The use of high-fidelity manikin-based simulation has been studied in many healthcare education areas. However, the use of this education technology in the American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course has not been well examined in the literature, despite this education program being one of the most widely taught standardized medical courses in the United States. This study examined high fidelity manikin-based simulation versus low-fidelity manikin-based simulation in the context of an actual ACLS course. Four outcomes were measured: learning outcomes as judged by an expert rater panel reviewing videos of subjects performing a simulated cardiac arrest event …

Aging Influences Multiple Indices Of Oxidative Stress In The Heart Of The Fischer 344/Nnia X Brown Norway/Binia Rat, Shinichi Asano Jan 2007

Aging Influences Multiple Indices Of Oxidative Stress In The Heart Of The Fischer 344/Nnia X Brown Norway/Binia Rat, Shinichi Asano

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Here we report the influence of aging on multiple markers of oxidativenitrosative stress in the heart of adult (6-month), aged (30-month) and very aged (36- month) Fischer 344/NNiaHSd X Brown Norway/BiNia (F344/NXBN) rats. Compared to 6 month old rat hearts, indices of oxidative (superoxide anion (–O2 ·), 4-hyrdoxy-2- nonenal (4-HNE)) and nitrosative (protein nitrotyrosylation) stress were 34.1 ± 28.1%, 186 ± 28.1% and 94 ± 5.8% higher, respectively, in 36-month hearts and these findings were highly correlated with increases in left ventricular wall thickness (r>0.669; r>0.710 and p<0.01, respectively). Regression analysis showed that increases in cardiac oxidative-nitrosative stress with aging were significantly correlated with changes in the expression and/or regulation of proteins involved in transcriptional (NF-κB) activities, signaling (mitogen activated protein kinases along with Src), apoptotic ( Bcl-2, Traf-2), and cellular stress (HSPs). These results suggest that the aging F344/NXBN heart may be highly suited for unraveling the molecular events that lead to age-associated alterations in cardiac oxidative stress.

Dolphin-Assisted Therapy: More Flawed Data And More Flawed Conclusions, Lori Marino, Scott O. Lilienfeld Jan 2007

Dolphin-Assisted Therapy: More Flawed Data And More Flawed Conclusions, Lori Marino, Scott O. Lilienfeld

Animal-Assisted Therapy Collection

Dolphin-Assisted Therapy (DAT) is an increasingly popular choice of treatment for illness and developmental disabilities by providing participants with the opportunity to swim or interact with live captive dolphins. Two reviews of DAT (Marino and Lilienfeld [1998] and Humphries [2003]) concluded that there is no credible scientific evidence for the effectiveness of this intervention. In this paper, we offer an update of the methodological status of DAT by reviewing five peer-reviewed DAT studies published in the last eight years. We found that all five studies were methodologically flawed and plagued by several threats to both internal and construct validity. We …

Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk Jan 2007

Possible Use Of Repeated Cold Stress For Reducing Fatigue In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Hypothesis, Nikolai A. Shevchuk

Radiation Oncology Publications

Background Physiological fatigue can be defined as a reduction in the force output and/or energy-generating capacity of skeletal muscle after exertion, which may manifest itself as an inability to continue exercise or usual activities at the same intensity. A typical example of a fatigue-related disorder is chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a disabling condition of unknown etiology and with uncertain therapeutic options. Recent advances in elucidating pathophysiology of this disorder revealed hypofunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and that fatigue in CFS patients appears to be associated with reduced motor neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS) and to a smaller extent …

The Recruitment Of Erk, Cortactin, And Wasp In The Process Of Enzymatic Secretion Of Zymogen Granules Following Cck Stimulation, Ashley Anderson Jan 2007

The Recruitment Of Erk, Cortactin, And Wasp In The Process Of Enzymatic Secretion Of Zymogen Granules Following Cck Stimulation, Ashley Anderson

Honors Capstones

Cellular secretion has been extensively studied in physiology. It is the process whereby cellular products are released outside the cell for with the pancreatic secretion of digestive enzymes being the best example. The secretory vesicles are thought to move by cytoskeletal rearrangements in the cell to reach the plasma membrane. The goal of this research was to identify proteins that might contribute to cytoskeletal rearrangement and determine whether they assemble at zymogen granules during secretion. These protein integral components include extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK), Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome protein (WASP), and cortactin. This research indeed confirmed the presence of all three …

Role Of Calcium And Nitric Oxide Synthase (Nos) In Brain Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Vidya Nag Nukala Jan 2007

Role Of Calcium And Nitric Oxide Synthase (Nos) In Brain Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Vidya Nag Nukala

Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience

Mitochondria are essential for promoting cell survival and growth through aerobic metabolism and energy production. Mitochondrial function is typically analyzed using mitochondria freshly isolated from tissues and cells because they yield tightly coupled mitochondria, whereas those from frozen tissue can consist of broken mitochondria and membrane fragments. A method, utilizing a well-characterized cryoprotectant such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), is described. Such mitochondria show preserved structure and function that presents us with a possible strategy to considerably expand the time-frame and the range of biochemical, molecular and metabolic studies that can be performed without the constraints of mitochondrial longevity ex vivo …

Analyses Of Parent And Teacher Responses On The Stress Survey Schedule For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Lisa A. Femia

Open Access Dissertations

To date, the Stress Survey Schedule (SSS) is the only survey that comprises items that are highly relevant to problems often experienced by people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Information regarding the validity of this instrument, however, is limited. The current study collected information from parents and teachers of children between the ages of 3-18 with a primary diagnosis of ASD from multiple sites using the SSS. Convergent and divergent validity estimates were examined using Pearson product-moment correlations coefficients framed in a multi-trait--multi-method matrix. In addition, reference samples were developed for teacher and parent ratings, providing means and standard deviations …

The Importance Of Individual And Population Variation To Human Stature Estimation, Kelly Jean Shields Jan 2007

The Importance Of Individual And Population Variation To Human Stature Estimation, Kelly Jean Shields

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Human stature estimation is a central part of forensic anthropological investigation. It is one of several factors used to identify unknown individuals. The statistical relationship between body length and body segment length allows for long bone lengths from an unidentified individual to be used in a linear regression equation to estimate living stature. These linear regression equations are often formulated from a data set of an entirely different population. This research explores the necessity for the unknown individual to be similar on a number of points to the known population that makes up the equation. Populations are highly variable, and …

A cognitive model illustrating decrement in human performance as a function of increased G-forces has been highly sought after by the Department of Defense (DoD) for various reasons. The F-16 and other air combat platforms are super-agile aircraft that are easily capable of imposing G-forces on a pilot that are beyond human physiological limitations. Knowledge of these physiological limits and more importantly the resultant restrictions in cognitive function could prove invaluable to those who design and pilot such aircraft. The model may be utilized in the construction of improved flight simulators that incorporate more realistically performing enemy targets and therefore …

Role Of Conduction In The Genesis Of Alternans Of Action Potential Duration In A Simulated One Dimensional Fiber, Sanjiv Ramalingam Jan 2007

Role Of Conduction In The Genesis Of Alternans Of Action Potential Duration In A Simulated One Dimensional Fiber, Sanjiv Ramalingam

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Ventricular fibrillation is one of the leading causes for Sudden Cardiac Death and is characterized by multiple activation wavefronts. Multiple activation wavefronts originate from a reentrant circuit which requires the presence of a unidirectional block in the path of a propagating excitation wave. It has been proposed that at the cellular level beat to beat alternation in the action potential duration at rapid pacing rates can result in a conduction block. Various mechanisms have been postulated to show the mechanisms of alternans. We use simulated activation in a one dimensional tissue fiber to show the existence of a new mechanism …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In the future, more food needs to be produced with increasingly scarce natural resources. Genomics can play a key role in accelerating yield gains because it helps to improve our understanding of genetic traits and assists in breeding for better crop performance. The scientific muscle of genomics attracted tremendous research investments, but the efficiency with which these investments are paying off is still low. How can we accelerate the application of molecular genetics to our understanding of crop physiology and subsequently to crop improvement? The missing link is a more detailed understanding of the effects of gene function on crop …
