The Validation Of A Methodology For Assessing The Impact Of Hybrid Simulation Training In The Minimization Of Adverse Outcomes In Surgery, Peter J. Fabri
The Validation Of A Methodology For Assessing The Impact Of Hybrid Simulation Training In The Minimization Of Adverse Outcomes In Surgery, Peter J. Fabri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Institute of Medicine report "To Err is Human," released in late 1999, raised the issue of human error in medicine to a new level of attention. This study examines the frequency, severity, and type (FST) of errors associated with postoperative surgical complications at a tertiary care, university-based medical center, addressing the intersection of three domains: patient safety, graduate medical education, and simulation-based training. The study develops and validates a classification system for medical error that is specific to surgery, affirming reliability internally and externally. Baseline data on the FST of errors is collected over a 12-month period. A hybrid, …
Central And Peripheral Autonomic Influences : Analysis Of Cardio-Pulmonary Dynamics Using Novel Wavelet Statistical Methods, Anne Marie Petrock
Central And Peripheral Autonomic Influences : Analysis Of Cardio-Pulmonary Dynamics Using Novel Wavelet Statistical Methods, Anne Marie Petrock
Dissertations
The development and implementation of novel signal processing techniques, particularly with regard to applications in the clinical environment, is critical to bringing computer-aided diagnoses of disease to reality. One of the most confounding factors in the field of cardiac autonomic response (CAR) research is the influence of the coupling of respiratory oscillations with cardiac oscillations.
This research had three objectives. The first was the assessment of central autonomic influence over heart rate oscillations when the pulmonary system is damaged. The second was to assess the link between peripheral and central autonomic control schema by evaluating the heart rate variability (HRV) …
Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony
Characterization Of Synthetic Dna Bar Codes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Gene-Deletion Strains, Kevin Pierre Anthony
Theses (Pre-2016)
Incorporation of strain-specific synthetic DNA tags into yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene-deletion strains has enabled identification of gene functions by massively parallel growth rate analysis. However, it is important to confirm the sequences of these tags, because mutations introduced during construction could lead to significant errors in hybridization performance. To validate this experimental system, we . sequenced 11,812 synthetic 20-mer molecular bar codes and adjacent sequences (>1.8 megabases synthetic DNA) by pyrosequencing and Sanger methods. At least 31% ofthe genome-integrated 20-mer tags contain differences from those originally synthesized. However, these mutations result in anomalous hybridization in only a small subset …

Effects Of Microgravity Cardiovascular Functions, Keegan Smiley
Effects Of Microgravity Cardiovascular Functions, Keegan Smiley
Theses (Pre-2016)
Although micro gravity means tiny or reduced gravity, it is a term frequently ., applied to label a state of free-fall within a gravitational field in which a comparison is made between the decreasing weight of an object and its stationary weight on Earth. The cardiovascular system undergoes several adaptations during spaceflight as the effects of microgravity allow fluids inside the body to redistribute. This activity is known as a "fluid shift" and is distinguished by a shift in the flow of blood and fluids toward the head. The results of this "fluid shift" are visible in astronauts exhibiting a …

Phytoestrogen is the chemical compound contains in plant which has estro-genic like effect. Estrogen has important function on woman’s sexual organ, such as proliferation of uterine and vaginal cornification. Phytoestrogen are weak agonists for estrogen and illicit statistic significantly increases in uterine wet weight, at definite dose, in uterothrophic bioassay. Biji Klabet or Fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) contains steroidal sapogenins such as diosgenin, tigogenin, gitogenin, yamogenin and trigoneoside, that suspected having an estrogen-like ef-fect or as phytoestrogen. The aim of this research was to investigate the estrogenic effect of fenugreek’s ethanolic extract in ovariectomized and immature rats models. These …
The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller
The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller
Senior Honors Theses
The relationship between food consumed and the resulting body size is not easy to understand. Considering the vast array of nutritional input, numerous hypotheses have been tested for connections among diet constituents and the shape of the human body. The purpose of this study was two fold: to determine the correlation between the level of blood cholesterol and waist size among college students and to determine the correlation between blood pressure and waist size among college students. Volunteers from an upper level Kinesiology class at Liberty University were measured around the waist, screened for blood pressure, and administered a cholesterol …

The completion of the draft sequence of the rhesus macaque genome allowed us to study the genomic composition and evolution of transposable elements in this representative of the Old World monkey lineage, a group of diverse primates closely related to humans. The L1 family of long interspersed elements appears to have evolved as a single lineage, and Alu elements have evolved into four currently active lineages. We also found evidence of elevated horizontal transmissions of retroviruses and the absence of DNA transposon activity in the Old World monkey lineage. In addition, ∼100 precursors of composite SVA (short interspersed element, variable …

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is an abundant primate species that diverged from the ancestors of Homo sapiens about 25 million years ago. Because they are genetically and physiologically similar to humans, rhesus monkeys are the most widely used nonhuman primate in basic and applied biomedical research. We determined the genome sequence of an Indian-origin Macaca mulatta female and compared the data with chimpanzees and humans to reveal the structure of ancestral primate genomes and to identify evidence for positive selection and lineage-specific expansions and contractions of gene families. A comparison of sequences from individual animals was used to investigate …

Phosphorylation And Regulation Of The Dopamine Transporter By Psychostimulant Substrates And Protein -Protein Interactions, Mark A. Cervinski
Phosphorylation And Regulation Of The Dopamine Transporter By Psychostimulant Substrates And Protein -Protein Interactions, Mark A. Cervinski
Theses and Dissertations
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is an integral membrane protein that clears dopamine (DA) from the synaptic space following neurotransmission. DATs amino acid sequence contains numerous serine, threonine and tyrosine residues, some of which are located in protein kinase consensus sites. While DAT phosphorylation and regulation in response to protein kinase C activation is well documented, evidence suggests that multiple signals and interacting proteins also mediate these processes. Previous research has also demonstrated that DAT regulation is influenced by the presence of the DAT substrates amphetamine (AMPH), methamphetamine (METH) and the uptake blocker cocaine. Using 32PO4 metabolic labeling and [3H]DA uptake …

Why Do Good People Steal Intellectual Property?, Oliver R. Goodenough, Gregory Decker J.D.
The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology
Why do good people steal intellectual property? You know who we mean. The person (perhaps even yourself) who feels deep remorse if she mistakenly walks off with your pencil, who takes a wallet she found on the street, full of money but with no identification, to the police, and who without a qualm or any thought of payment, downloads copyrighted music off the internet or from a friend to put onto her iPod. What is going on here? Some suggest ignorance of the law, but that is generally not the case. She knows about copyright. Some suggest a lack of …

We described the derivation of four stable pluripotent rabbit embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines, one (RF) from blastocysts fertilized in vivo and cultured in vitro and three (RP01, RP02, and RP03) from parthenogenetic blastocysts. These ESC lines have been cultivated for extended periods (RF >1 year, RP01 >8 months, RP02 >8 months, and RP03 >6 months) in vitro while maintaining expression of pluripotent ESC markers and a normal XY or XX karyotype. The ESCs from all lines expressed alkaline phosphatase, transcription factor Oct-4, stage-specific embryonic antigens (SSEA-1, SSEA-3, and SSEA-4), and the tumor-related antigens (TRA-1-60 and TRA-1-81). Similar to human …
