So You Want To Be A Leader In Higher Education? Developing Leadership In Women, Susan R. Madsen Aug 2007

So You Want To Be A Leader In Higher Education? Developing Leadership In Women, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

This insightful and innovative PDW will 1) describe some of the results of a qualitative research study on the leadership development of ten women university presidents, and 2) provide participants with an opportunity to engage in self-analysis and personal reflection. "Leadership" will be broadly framed as leading from a formal position (e.g., president, VP, dean, associate dean, department chair, or committee chair) as well as influencing without an official title or formal authority; therefore, conference attendees interested in influencing change at any level in higher education would benefit.

Stabilization Of Smar1 Mrna By Pga2 Involves A Stem Loop Structure In The 5' Utr, Lakshminarasimhan Pavritha, Shravanti Rampalli, Surajit Sinha, Kadreppa Sreenath, Richard G. Pestell, Samit Chattopadhyay Aug 2007

Stabilization Of Smar1 Mrna By Pga2 Involves A Stem Loop Structure In The 5' Utr, Lakshminarasimhan Pavritha, Shravanti Rampalli, Surajit Sinha, Kadreppa Sreenath, Richard G. Pestell, Samit Chattopadhyay

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Prostaglandins are anticancer agents known to inhibit tumor cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo by affecting the mRNA stability. Here we report that a MAR-binding protein SMAR1 is a target of Prostaglandin A2 (PGA2) induced growth arrest. We identify a regulatory mechanism leading to stabilization of SMAR1 transcript. Our results show that a minor stem and loop structure present in the 5' UTR of SMAR1 (1-UTR) is critical for nucleoprotein complex formation that leads to SMAR1 stabilization in response to PGA2. This results in an increased SMAR1 transcript and altered protein levels, that in turn causes downregulation of …

Emergency Roadside Technician Dies When Struck By A Single-Unit Truck On An Interstate Shoulder, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center Aug 2007

Emergency Roadside Technician Dies When Struck By A Single-Unit Truck On An Interstate Shoulder, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Motor Vehicle

In the winter of 2005 a 52-year-old male emergency roadside technician (ERT), (providing traffic control support for police), died when he fell approximately 75 – 80 feet from a bridge after being struck by a single-unit truck. A policeman had responded to a call from a semi-truck driver on the interstate who had blown a tire while driving on an interstate. After the tire blew, the driver immediately pulled the semi onto the right shoulder and called police for assistance. This section of the shoulder was on a bridge on the blind side of a hill, and was too narrow …

Food Security And Hunger Among Low Income Us Households: Relations To Federal Food Assistance Program Participation, Rebecca Elizabeth Sanders Aug 2007

Food Security And Hunger Among Low Income Us Households: Relations To Federal Food Assistance Program Participation, Rebecca Elizabeth Sanders

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes the conceptual and empirical framework that guides the definition of food insecurity and hunger, the present status of federal programmatic responses, and the status of current research on the topic. It also examines relations between hunger and federal food assistance program participation. Logistic regression is utilized to build two predictor models. Model 1 predicts federal food assistance program participation from household structure, income, community characteristics, and demographics. Model 2 predicts food insecurity/hunger from household structure, income, community characteristics, demographics, and federal food assistance program participation. Results are based on 2004 Current Population Survey data from low income …

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen Aug 2007

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen

Faculty Publications

Many studies have documented the ways in which shyness can be a barrier to personal well-being and social adjustment throughout childhood and adolescence; however, less is known regarding shyness in emerging adulthood. Shyness as experienced during emerging adulthood may continue to be a risk factor for successful development. The purpose of this study was to compare shy emerging adults with their non-shy peers in (a) internalizing behaviors, (b) externalizing behaviors, and (c) close relationships. Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 women, 313 men) from a number of locations across the United States. Results showed that relatively shy emerging adults, both …

The Relationship Between Pragmatic Language And Behavior Subtypes In Typically Developing Children, Lisa Jeppson Christensen Aug 2007

The Relationship Between Pragmatic Language And Behavior Subtypes In Typically Developing Children, Lisa Jeppson Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between syntactic and pragmatic language and reticence, solitary-active passive withdrawal, solitary-passive withdrawal, prosocial skills, and likeability. The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2), a language checklist, and Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS), a behavior checklist, were completed by three 2nd-grade teachers and three 4th-grade teachers about each of their students. Factor analysis was used to determine two composite language measures from the CCC-2 scales. The results of two hierarchal regression analyses indicated that social behaviors were significant predictors of pragmatic language, but not structural language. In particular, solitary-passive withdrawal and reticence were significant predictors of pragmatic language …

Civil Case Appellate Standards Of Review (And A Very Few Unavoidable Related Propositions Of Law), Updated And Revised (Current Through August 3, 2007), Alan G. Gless Aug 2007

Civil Case Appellate Standards Of Review (And A Very Few Unavoidable Related Propositions Of Law), Updated And Revised (Current Through August 3, 2007), Alan G. Gless

State of Nebraska Judicial Branch

Why would a district court judge write about or revise an appellate court judge’s work on appellate standards of review and related propositions of law in civil cases? Well, two reasons – a change in legal mind set and fifteen years’ worth of changes in appellate practice. First, and foremost, when Judge Irwin collected in a single work his 1992 Standards of Review and Propositions of Law, Civil, he was the first in recent Nebraska legal history to do so. Those of us who have used his work owe him our thanks; his contribution was invaluable to both the bench …

College 101: Strategies For First Year Success – A Program For High School Seniors, Brian Raison Aug 2007

College 101: Strategies For First Year Success – A Program For High School Seniors, Brian Raison

Journal of Youth Development

Making the transition from high school to college can be one of the biggest challenges in life. The first year dropout rate stands at 26% nationally. Adolescent decision-making literature suggests that youths can achieve greater success and reduce negative consequences during their first year of college if they 1) increase knowledge of new social scene and academic protocols, and 2) work through a conjectural decision-making process prior to actual encounters. This program presents key points high school seniors “must know” in advance of their arrival on campus. It is research-based with first-hand advice from real college students including on-the-street video …

Laboratory And Field Responses Of Target And Non-Target Species To Algaecide Exposures, Bryand Duke Aug 2007

Laboratory And Field Responses Of Target And Non-Target Species To Algaecide Exposures, Bryand Duke

All Dissertations

In order for water resource managers to effectively and efficiently react to algal growths that are prohibiting use of a lake, reservoir or stream, information must be obtained on the response of the specific algae in site waters to algaecide exposures. In the absence of this information, ineffective algaecides or excessive treatments may be implemented. Research on development of an efficient algaecide assay using site specific samples could contribute to better decisions regarding algaecide applications and increase margins of safety for non-target species. Since these laboratory experiments provide predictions of responses of algae in site waters to algaecide exposures, these …

Measurement And Analysis Of Hydromechanical Effects In Fractured Rock, Todd Schweisinger Aug 2007

Measurement And Analysis Of Hydromechanical Effects In Fractured Rock, Todd Schweisinger

All Dissertations

Fractures in rock hold important stores of water and petroleum, and slight changes in fracture aperture accompanying drawdown from pumping wells play a key role in recovering these resources. Four accomplishments are described that advance insight into the behavior and characterization of fractured crystalline rock.
First was the development of two removable borehole extensometers that enable small axial displacements to be measured during hydraulic well tests. The extensometers consist of four major components: 1.) a pair of anchors; 2.) a displacement transducer 3.) a registration system, and; 4.) a temperature-compensated reference rod. One extensometer uses an axial reference rod with …

Characterization Of Recycled Aged Crm Binders, Soon-Jae Lee Aug 2007

Characterization Of Recycled Aged Crm Binders, Soon-Jae Lee

All Dissertations

The incorporation of conventional reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements has become routine in many states around the United States and many other countries all over the world. In addition, the recycling of crumb rubber modified (CRM) materials has been an area of interest since CRM was first used in asphalt paving materials over 40 years ago. Previous research on the recycling of rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) materials have been limited and focused mainly on the mixture properties at the location of in-field paving. However, for the long-term performance characterizations, it is needed to investigate the aging …

Qualitative Aspects Of Mate Availability And Their Effects On Intra-Household Bargaining Power, Brighita Negrusa Aug 2007

Qualitative Aspects Of Mate Availability And Their Effects On Intra-Household Bargaining Power, Brighita Negrusa

All Dissertations

This dissertation studies the impact of changes in outside marriage market opportunities on intra-household bargaining power. In the first chapter, I analyze the impact of the availability of healthy mates on intra-household bargaining power. I specify a marriage market matching model and test the main prediction that in marriage markets in which both healthy and frail men marry, an increase in the relative scarcity of healthy women enhances wives' bargaining power. This effect is estimated in a collective labor supply framework in which spousal bargaining power and labor supply are inversely related. I use CPS data and Census data on …

Planning, Scheduling, And Timetabling In A University Setting, Christine Kraft Aug 2007

Planning, Scheduling, And Timetabling In A University Setting, Christine Kraft

All Dissertations

Methods and procedures for modeling university student populations, predicting course enrollment, allocating course seats, and timetabling final examinations are studied and proposed. The university enrollment model presented uses a multi-dimensional state space based on student demographics and the Markov property, rather than longitudinal data to model student movement. The procedure for creating adaptive course prediction models uses student characteristics to identify groups of undergraduates whose specific course enrollment rates are significantly different than the rest of the university population. Historical enrollment rates and current semester information complete the model for predicting enrollment for the coming semester. The course prediction model …

Toward A Model Of Intention To Perform Partnership Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Melissa Weddell Aug 2007

Toward A Model Of Intention To Perform Partnership Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Melissa Weddell

All Dissertations

The partnership phenomenon has received considerable attention as an alternative management strategy for public agencies. The current political culture of fiscal constraint and 'doing more with less' has caused a groundswell of interest in collaborative, partnering, and resource sharing arrangements (Selin & Myers, 1995). Partnership offers a process to increase involvement through democratic means and provide a viable approach for expanding the range of services offered, enhancing the opportunities of park visitors, and building a sense of community pride (Vaske, Donnelly, & LaPage, 1995). Partnerships between public agencies and corporations are rapidly becoming an accepted mechanism to generate additional park …

Nonlinear Vibration And Frequency Response Analysis Of Nanomechanical Cantilever Beams, Seyed Nima Mahmoodi Aug 2007

Nonlinear Vibration And Frequency Response Analysis Of Nanomechanical Cantilever Beams, Seyed Nima Mahmoodi

All Dissertations

Microcantilevers are one the most commonly utilized microelectromechanical systems in a variant of the ultra-precise scanning and characterization application. Of particular interest, the problem of vibrations of microcantilevers has recently received considerable attention due to its application in several nanotechnological instruments such as atomic force microscopy, nanomechanical cantilever sensors and friction force microscopy. For applications such as these, the problem of coupled flexural-torsional nonlinear vibrations of a piezoelectrically-actuated microcantilever beam is considered in this dissertation. The actuation and sensing are both facilitated through bonding a piezoelectric layer (here, ZnO) on the microcantilever surface. The beam is considered to have simultaneous …

Activation Of Systemic Adhesion Molecules And C Reactive Protein In Response To Biomaterial Particle Induced Cytokine Production, Robin Graham Aug 2007

Activation Of Systemic Adhesion Molecules And C Reactive Protein In Response To Biomaterial Particle Induced Cytokine Production, Robin Graham

All Dissertations

Chronic inflammation has been identified as a major contributor to many diseases including, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes, to name a few. Many of the same markers of inflammation found in the diseases listed above, including IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, NF-B and adhesion molecules, have also been found in wear debris induced osteolysis. While the local response to biomaterial wear debris has been characterized quite extensively, very little is known about the systemic effect of biomaterial wear debris on the inflammatory system. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo inflammatory …

Maternal High-Salt Diet During Pregnancy In Sprague Dawley Rats Programs Exaggerated Stress-Induced Blood Pressure And Heart Rate Responses In Adult Female Offspring, Summer Hayes King Aug 2007

Maternal High-Salt Diet During Pregnancy In Sprague Dawley Rats Programs Exaggerated Stress-Induced Blood Pressure And Heart Rate Responses In Adult Female Offspring, Summer Hayes King

Theses and Dissertations

The prenatal environment has been shown to have lasting effects on cardiovascular health. In the present study, pregnant rats were fed a 0.7% NaCl normal salt (NS) diet or an 8% NaCl high salt (HS) diet throughout pregnancy. Adult offspring were fitted with radiotelemetry probes to continuously measure blood pressure and heart rate. Rats were placed in restraining cages to test for a programmed acute stress hyperresponsiveness. Offspring were challenged with HS diet for one week to determine if blood pressure salt sensitivity had been programmed by the prenatal HS diet. Animals were killed following resting and acute stress conditions, …
