Novice Special Education Teachers' Experiences With Students With Disabilities From Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds: The Effects Of Perceptions On Interactions, Sassy Cenita Wheeler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Novice special education teachers often enter their professions with unique perspectives that contribute to the overall educational experience of their students. This research was designed to inform the existing literature revolving around novice special education teachers' experiences, and how they subsequently effect the perceptions and interactions engaged in with students with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Five novice special education teachers who currently serve students with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds offered their unique perspectives for this research. This research study consisted of individual interviews, two direct classroom observations, and responses to three reflections of recent …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Gbr 12909 Tropane And Azetidine Hybrid Analogues, Shaine A. Cararas
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Gbr 12909 Tropane And Azetidine Hybrid Analogues, Shaine A. Cararas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The high affinity, selective dopamine transporter ligand GBR 12909 has served as a template for the design of two novel classes of dopamine transporter ligands. A series of 3-[2- (diarylmethoxyethyidenyl)]-N-substituted tropane derivatives were synthesized and the binding affinities of these compounds were determined at the dopamine (DAT), serotonin (SERT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters in rat brain tissue preparations. The tropane derivatives were found to exhibit more potent affinity and selectivity for DAT than GBR 12909. From the SAR of the tropane analogues and GBR 12909, a novel series of 3-[2-(diarylmethoxyethylidenyl)]-Nsubstituted azetidine derivatives has been developed.
The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue
The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
All school systems throughout the country serve students referred to as at risk. Research documents that these students are at a greater risk of dropping out of school due to characteristics that contribute to school disengagement. By exploring the perspectives of male inmates aged 18-30 regarding their educational experiences, this study's data illuminated how school personnel and the schooling process may theoretically contribute to negative outcomes such as incarceration. The focus of the study was to identify commonalities and phenomena in relation to educational experiences, school engagement levels, deviant behavior, and school staff-student interactions as related to the at-risk student …
Female Participation In The Informal Sector In Brazil In 1996 And In 2005, Carla Nimrichter
Female Participation In The Informal Sector In Brazil In 1996 And In 2005, Carla Nimrichter
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Social and economic changes that happened in Brazil in the 1990s have changed the organization of female employment in the country. In this study, I examine the participation of women in the informal sector in Brazil in 1996 and 2005. Using micro-level data from the Brazilian Monthly Employment Survey, I find Brazilian female workers became older, more educated, and that female informal employment increased over the period studied. Although selfemployment was reduced, an increase in wage-employment in informal manufacturing was noticed, which indicates growth in subcontracting. Higher share of female headed households, lower income and higher poverty levels were predominantly …

The Decline Of Fowler's Toad (Bufo Fowleri) In Southern Louisiana: Molecular Genetics, Field Experiments And Landscape Studies, Laura Sanders Vogel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Two of the most pervasive threats to species biodiversity are invasive species and habitat loss and degradation. Invasive species are often relatively insensitive to disturbance and many expand their range into disturbed and fragmented habitats. This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate how anthropogenic habitat disturbance is precipitating a range expansion in an invasive toad species, Bufo nebulifer, which is driving a decline in its native congener, B. fowleri. I employed a remote sensing and GIS study using historical data to compare changes in the two species distributions and habitat changes, a molecular genetic study to identify interspecific hybrids …
Characterization Of Oligosaccharides And Nanoparticles By Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometry, Bing Guan
Characterization Of Oligosaccharides And Nanoparticles By Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometry, Bing Guan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The possibilities of differentiating linkage positions and anomeric configurations of small oligosaccharides by negative ion mode MALDI using anion attachment followed by PSD are investigated. By careful initial adjustment of the focusing mirror ratios allowing acquisition of the peaks of interest within the same PSD segment, it is possible to obtain highly reproducible relative ion abundances. Discrimination of different linkage types is achieved by analysis of structurally-informative diagnostic peaks offered by PSD spectra of chloride adducts of oligosaccharides, whereas the relative peak intensities of selected diagnostic fragment pairs make differentiation of anomeric configuration possible. F- and Ac- cannot form anionic …
Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl
Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and storm surges breached levees flooding much of New Orleans, Louisiana. One month after the storm, sediment was collected and toxicity was tested using Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos. Sediments with the highest contaminant levels showed the highest embryonic mortality and most delayed development. However, no sediment caused an increased mutant frequency. When the most contaminated site was resampled in February, 2006 contaminant levels and toxicity decreased. During toxicity testing, approximately 20% of embryos incubated with sediment from one of these sites died and turned red. A red bacterium was …
The Working Environment In Health Care — Does The Working Environment Influence The Psychosocial Health Of Nurses And Are Modifications Of This Working Environment Needed?, Nicole Hoefsmit
Family and Community Medicine Research and Scholarship
Context: Ageing of the population and an increase of the life expectancy are worldwide phenomena that result in a growing demand for health care professionals. Future problems are expected in providing for this demand. Not only difficulties in attracting new potential professionals, but also difficulties in retaining the existing workforce are suspected to be a part in a possible future shortage of workforce. A statistical significant relationship exists between the working environment and the developmental level of the workforce. The working environment can therefore be interpreted as a key factor in the prevention of potential future problems. Setting: The work …

Peptides and methods of their use for inhibiting drug and radiation-therapy resistance in cancerous cells in which efficacy of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy of a patient is enhanced by administration of an effective amount of a peptide that inhibits cell adhesion mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR). Preferably, the peptide comprises D-amino acids having the sequence: kmviywkag (RZ-3) or is a variant or modified version thereof. The peptide is preferably administered to the patient prior to chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Inhibition of cell adhesion mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR) by RZ-3 in multiple myeloma cells is disclosed.
Assays Of Vacuole Fusion Resolve The Stages Of Docking, Lipid Mixing, And Content Mixing, Youngsoo Jun, William Wickner
Assays Of Vacuole Fusion Resolve The Stages Of Docking, Lipid Mixing, And Content Mixing, Youngsoo Jun, William Wickner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Membrane fusion entails organelle docking and subsequent mixing of membrane bilayers and luminal compartments. We now present an in vitro assay of fusion, using yeast vacuoles bearing domains of either Fos or Jun fused to complementary halves of beta-lactamase. Upon fusion, these proteins associate to yield beta-lactamase activity. This assay complements the standard fusion assay (activation of pro-Pho8p in protease-deficient vacuoles by proteases from pho8Delta vacuoles). Both the beta-lactamase and pro-Pho8p activation assays of fusion show the same long kinetic delay between SNARE pairing and luminal compartment mixing. Lipid-mixing occurs rapidly after SNARE pairing but well before aqueous compartment mixing. …
Community Management For Improved Sustainability: Case Studies Of Three Rural Community Water Supply And Sanitation Projects In Honduras, Christine Casey
Community Management For Improved Sustainability: Case Studies Of Three Rural Community Water Supply And Sanitation Projects In Honduras, Christine Casey
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The sustainability of a rural water supply and sanitation project is essential to the health of a community. Three rural communities in Honduras organized themselves and requested water supply and sanitation projects. With the help of the local and national governments and technical volunteers, they constructed the systems, were trained in operation and maintenance, and educated in hygiene and sanitation. The goal was self-sustaining projects after the technicians left. Upon visiting the projects of Nueva Vida, Miramar, and Las Flores after 3, 4, and 13 years of operation, respectively, I observed that the communities did not appear to be heading …

Low Molecular Weight Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Lmw-Ptp) And Its Possible Physiological Functions Of Redox Signaling In The Eye Lens, Kuiyi Xing, Ashraf Raza, Stefan Lofgren, M. Rohan Fernando, Ye-Shih Ho, Marjorie F. Lou
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMW-PTP) was cloned from human lens epithelial B3 cells (HLE B3) and the recombinant enzyme was purified to homogeneity. The pure enzyme reacted positively with anti-LMW-PTP antibody, displayed tyrosine-specific phosphatase activity and was extremely sensitive to H2O2. The inactivated LMW-PTP could be regenerated by thioltransferase (TTase)/GSH system as demonstrated by both activity assay and by mass spectrometry (MS). The MS study also showed that an intramolecular disulfide bond was formed between C13 and C18 at the active site, and was reduced by the TTase/GSH system. The putative role of LMW-PTP in regulating platelet derived …

Challenges Facing A Complementary-Systems Approach To Abstract And Episodic Speech Perception, Conor T. Mclennan
Challenges Facing A Complementary-Systems Approach To Abstract And Episodic Speech Perception, Conor T. Mclennan
Psychology Faculty Publications
It has been nearly a decade since the publication of
Goldinger’s [4] Psych. Review paper in which he
presented his episodic theory of lexical access.
Moreover, Goldinger’s (and others’) empirical
work [3, 14] providing evidence for episodic
representations predates the formal presentation of
his episodic theory. This is an appropriate time to
note how the field has progressed in the past decade
with respect to the debate over the nature of lexical
representations. As evidenced by the two main
papers, the emphasis is no longer on whether there
are abstract and/or episodic representations. Instead,
the focus is now on the …

Estimating The Prevalence Of Disease Using Relatives Of Case And Control Probands, Kristin N. Javaras, Nan M. Laird, James I. Hudson, Brian D. Ripley
Estimating The Prevalence Of Disease Using Relatives Of Case And Control Probands, Kristin N. Javaras, Nan M. Laird, James I. Hudson, Brian D. Ripley
COBRA Preprint Series
We introduce a method for estimating the prevalence of disease using data from a case-control family study performed to investigate the aggregation of disease in families. The families are sampled via case and control probands, and the resulting data consist of information on disease status and covariates for the probands and their relatives. We introduce estimators for overall prevalence and for covariate stratum-specific prevalence (e.g., sex-specific prevalence) that yield approximately unbiased estimates of their population counterparts. We also introduce corresponding confidence intervals that have good coverage properties even for small prevalences. The estimators and intervals address the over-representation of diseased …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
MUC4 is a type-1 transmembrane glycoprotein and is overexpressed in many carcinomas. It is a heterodimeric protein of 930 kDa, composed of a mucin-type subunit, MUC4alpha, and a membrane-bound growth factor-like subunit, MUC4beta. MUC4 mRNA contains unique 5' and 3' coding sequences along with a large variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) domain of 7-19 kb. A direct association of MUC4 overexpression has been established with the degree of invasiveness and poor prognosis of pancreatic cancer. To understand the precise role of MUC4 in pancreatic cancer, we engineered a MUC4 complementary DNA construct, mini-MUC4, whose deduced protein (320 kDa) is …

All-Trans Retinoic Acid Mediates Enhanced T Reg Cell Growth, Differentiation, And Gut Homing In The Face Of High Levels Of Co-Stimulation, Micah J. Benson, Karina Pino-Lagos, Mario Rosemblatt, Randolph J. Noelle
Dartmouth Scholarship
We demonstrate that all-trans retinoic acid (RA) induces FoxP3(+) adaptive T regulatory cells (A-Tregs) to acquire a gut-homing phenotype (alpha 4 beta 7(+) CC chemokine receptor 9(+)) and the capacity to home to the lamina propria of the small intestine. Under conditions that favor the differentiation of A-Tregs (transforming growth factor-beta1 and interleukin 2) in vitro, the inclusion of RA induces nearly all activated CD4(+) T cells to express FoxP3 and greatly increases the accumulation of these cells. In the absence of RA, A-Treg differentiation is abruptly impaired by proficient antigen presenting cells or through direct co-stimulation. In the presence …
