A Serratia Marcescens Oxyr Homolog Mediates Surface Attachment And Biofilm Formation, Robert M. Q. Shanks, Nicholas A. Stella, Eric J. Kalivoda, Megan R. Doe Aug 2007

A Serratia Marcescens Oxyr Homolog Mediates Surface Attachment And Biofilm Formation, Robert M. Q. Shanks, Nicholas A. Stella, Eric J. Kalivoda, Megan R. Doe

Dartmouth Scholarship

OxyR is a conserved bacterial transcription factor with a regulatory role in oxidative stress response. From a genetic screen for genes that modulate biofilm formation in the opportunistic pathogen Serratia marcescens, mutations in an oxyR homolog and predicted fimbria structural genes were identified. S. marcescens oxyR mutants were severely impaired in biofilm formation, in contrast to the hyperbiofilm phenotype exhibited by oxyR mutants of Escherichia coli and Burkholderia pseudomallei. Further analysis revealed that OxyR plays a role in the primary attachment of cells to a surface. Similar to what is observed in other bacterial species, S. marcescens OxyR …

Physiological Compliance During Team Performance, Amanda Elkins Aug 2007

Physiological Compliance During Team Performance, Amanda Elkins

All Theses

Physiological compliance (PC) refers to the correlation between physiological measures of team members over time. The first goal of the current analyses was to generate several means to measure PC from heart rate variability (HRV) data. A second goal was to examine the relationship between PC and team performance during a building clearing task performed by 4-man teams. Teams were tasked with entering and clearing both real and simulated rooms populated with combatants (individuals with a weapon) and non-combatants (individuals without a weapon). Teams had to eliminate (shoot with a laser tag or simulated weapon) combatants and identify non-combatants (verbally …

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen Aug 2007

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen

Faculty Publications

Many studies have documented the ways in which shyness can be a barrier to personal well-being and social adjustment throughout childhood and adolescence; however, less is known regarding shyness in emerging adulthood. Shyness as experienced during emerging adulthood may continue to be a risk factor for successful development. The purpose of this study was to compare shy emerging adults with their non-shy peers in (a) internalizing behaviors, (b) externalizing behaviors, and (c) close relationships. Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 women, 313 men) from a number of locations across the United States. Results showed that relatively shy emerging adults, both …

Integrating Spirituality And Psychotherapy: Ethical Issues And Principles To Consider, Thomas G. Plante Aug 2007

Integrating Spirituality And Psychotherapy: Ethical Issues And Principles To Consider, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

Professional and scientific psychology appears to have rediscovered spirituality and religion during recent years, with a large number of conferences, seminars, workshops, books, and special issues in major professional journals on spirituality and psychology integration. The purpose of this commentary is to highlight some of the more compelling ethical principles and issues to consider in spirituality and psychology integration with a focus on psychotherapy. This commentary will use the American Psychological Association's (2002) Ethics Code and more specifically, the RRICC model of ethics that readily applies to various mental health ethics codes across the world. The RRICC model highlights the …

Compartmentalization Of Hiv-1 In The Secondary Lymphoid Tissues, James Peter Gregson Aug 2007

Compartmentalization Of Hiv-1 In The Secondary Lymphoid Tissues, James Peter Gregson

Theses and Dissertations

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) reside in the lymphoid follicles of the secondary lymphoid tissues (sLTs). Following the infection of an individual with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), viral particles are trapped in massive quantities on the surfaces of FDCs. HIV-1 viral compartments are cell types or tissues between which there is a restriction of virus flow. Compartmentalization of HIV-1 creates numerous sites within the body in which the virus can undergo independent evolution, giving rise to a more diverse total viral population. Given the sessile nature of the FDC, I hypothesized that contrary to common assumptions, FDC-trapped HIV-1 is …

2-1-1 In The Mid South Delta: A Collective Case Study, Nancy Shank Aug 2007

2-1-1 In The Mid South Delta: A Collective Case Study, Nancy Shank

Nancy Shank Publications

In the summer of 2005, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to the United Way of America to demonstrate the ability of three Mississippi Delta states to develop 2-1-1 services and enable community resource data sharing. The three states, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi, face significant social and economic challenges, particularly in the Mississippi Delta region. The focus of the Kellogg Foundation funding was development of resource databases and 2-1-1 in Arkansas and Mississippi, with particular focus on the Mid South Delta area. The 2-1-1 for northeast Louisiana, located in Louisiana’s Delta area, also received funding to enhance their …

A Person-Centered, Asset-Based Community Development Framework For Youth With Special Health Care Needs/Disabilities In Transition To Adulthood, Heather H. Boyd, Beth Swedeen Aug 2007

A Person-Centered, Asset-Based Community Development Framework For Youth With Special Health Care Needs/Disabilities In Transition To Adulthood, Heather H. Boyd, Beth Swedeen

Journal of Youth Development

In the United States, 12.8 percent of children under 18 have special health care needs. Ninety percent of youth in America with special health care needs and/or disabilities can now be expected to reach adulthood. Youth with special health care needs and/or disabilities are less likely to experience successful transition to adulthood in comparison to youth without special health care needs. This article presents a person-centered, asset-based community development approach that assisted youth in achieving transition and inclusion-oriented outcomes. Examples are drawn from a Healthy & Ready to Work demonstration project in Wisconsin. At the center of our approach to …

A Game Theoretic Analysis Of Parallel Trade And The Pricing Of Pharmaceutical Products, Frank Müller-Langer Aug 2007

A Game Theoretic Analysis Of Parallel Trade And The Pricing Of Pharmaceutical Products, Frank Müller-Langer

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

We develop a simple double marginalization model with complete information, in which an original manufacturer of a pharmaceutical product faces potential competition from parallel imports by a foreign exclusive distributor. The model suggests that parallel imports will never occur in the sub-game perfect Nash equilibrium, as it will always be beneficial for the manufacturer to monopolize the home country by undercutting the price of the reimported pharmaceutical product. However, the question as to whether it is optimal for the manufacturer to charge the monopoly price in the home country depends on the level of trade costs and the level of …

Preacher Man V. Porn King: A Legal, Cultural, And Moral Drama Starring Jerry Falwell, Larry Flynt, And The First Amendment, Tory L. Lucas

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Take one part proselytizing, political Southern Baptist televangelist, one part obnoxious, media-seeking pornographer, and one part First Amendment free speech, and you get the colossal legal, cultural, and moral battle embodied in the seminal Supreme Court case of Hustler Magazine v. Falwell. It all started in late 1983 with a controversial and despicable ad parody of a man and his mother that culminated in an aggressive legal battle between litigants on polar opposites of the moral and legal spectrum. Going behind the text of the Supreme Court decision, this article delves into the history behind the unique circumstances that made …
