State-Corporate Crime And The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Alan S. Bruce, Paul J. Becker Oct 2007

State-Corporate Crime And The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Alan S. Bruce, Paul J. Becker

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

While criminologists have for some time examined state and corporate crime as separate entities, the concept of state-corporate crime highlighting joint government and private corporate action causing criminal harm is a recent area of study with relatively few published case studies (Matthews and Kauzlarich, 2000). This paper focuses on state-corporate crime at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in Paducah, Kentucky, and contributes to the study of state-corporate crime in three ways: (1) it adds a new case study to a field in which there are few published accounts, (2) it assesses the utility of Kauzlarich and Kramer’s (1998) integrated …

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Timur Kuran Oct 2007

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Timur Kuran

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs-- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. Their availability campaigns may yield social benefits, but sometimes they …

Corporate Social Accountability Standards In The Global Supply Chain: Resistance, Reconsideration, And Resolution In China, Li-Wen Lin Oct 2007

Corporate Social Accountability Standards In The Global Supply Chain: Resistance, Reconsideration, And Resolution In China, Li-Wen Lin

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

This Article provides a view on corporate social accountability standards from a Chinese perspective, a slightly different angle from that of legal scholars in the United States. The legal literature in the United States typically only focuses on the importance and effectiveness of corporate social accountability standards to regulate the conduct of multinational companies in the era of globalization. However, the views of the outsourced companies in the developing countries, on which the multinational companies impose the standards, have seldom received attention. This Article tries to fill this void by examining the situation in China. As shown in this Article, …

The Dysfunctional Progeny Of Eugenics: Autonomy Gone Awol, Matthew D. Martin Iii Oct 2007

The Dysfunctional Progeny Of Eugenics: Autonomy Gone Awol, Matthew D. Martin Iii

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the ethical and legal implications of state-mandated sterilization, tracing its evolution from eugenic practices in the early 20th century to modern forms of reproductive control. It argues that such policies, whether justified by eugenics or population control, consistently violate human rights and raise significant moral concerns. The analysis critiques the Supreme Court's decision in Buck v. Bell as a landmark example of judicial endorsement of pseudoscientific discrimination, while also exploring contemporary issues like prenatal genetic testing and coercive family planning policies.

A Final Plea For "Death With Dignity": A Proposal For The Modification And Approval Of The Assisted Dying For The Terminally Ill Bill In The United Kingdom, Lindsay Pfeffer Oct 2007

A Final Plea For "Death With Dignity": A Proposal For The Modification And Approval Of The Assisted Dying For The Terminally Ill Bill In The United Kingdom, Lindsay Pfeffer

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Increasing respect for personal autonomy in health-related decision-making, major alterations in the assisted suicide laws of other European countries (especially Switzerland and the Netherlands), and the rising popularity of Swiss suicide clinics have introduced the need for the British legislature to reevaluate the United Kingdom's stance on assisted suicide and to adjust medical practices to contemporary social needs. The introduction and obstruction of a bill in the House of Lords for the legalization of physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill individuals has provoked opposition from the British medical community and serious concern on behalf of members of the government regarding the …

Connected Lives And Embeddedness: Reading Zelizer With Granovetter – A Review And Critique, Deirdre Caputo-Levine, Alwyn Lim, Celine. Wills Oct 2007

Connected Lives And Embeddedness: Reading Zelizer With Granovetter – A Review And Critique, Deirdre Caputo-Levine, Alwyn Lim, Celine. Wills

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Our concern is to read Viviana Zelizer’s Purchase of Intimacy inrelation to Mark Granovetter’s embeddedness framework. We compare Zelizer’s connected-lives approach to the embeddedness literature in orderto tease out the similarities, differences, and improvements in the wayseconomic sociologists examine the intertwining of economic and socialbehavior. We argue that although Zelizer and Granovetter both focus onthis intermeshing of socioeconomic action, their perspectives reflect theirdiffering starting points: economic transactions or intimate relationships. We believe Zelizer’s connected-lives approach gives fresh insight to thenew economic sociology but we have some reservations regarding hertreatment of reciprocity and power in intimate relationships.

Search For Effective Natural Enemies Of Tetranychus Evansi (Acari: Tetranychidae) In Northwest Argentina, Imeuda P. Furtado, Silvana Toledo, Gilberto J. De Moraes, Serge Kreiter, Markus Knapp

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The mite Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard (Tetranychidae) probably originated in South America. Because of its importance as a tomato pest in Africa, an extensive project has been conducted to detect potentially effective natural enemies in South America for the classical biological control of the pest in Africa. A search for the natural enemies of T. evansi was conducted in the Province of Tucumán, northwestern Argentina, in December 2004, and this report describes the results. One hundred predatory mites of the family Phytoseiidae referring to 11 species were collected on 11 examined species of solanaceous plants. The most abundant phytoseiid …

Publications and Research

Background
Sex differences in lipids and body shape, but not diabetes, increase at puberty. Hong Kong Chinese are mainly first or second generation migrants from China, who have shared an economically developed environment for years, but grew up in very different environments in Hong Kong or contemporaneously undeveloped Guangdong, China. We assessed if environment during growth had sex-specific associations with lipids and body shape, but not diabetes.

Methodology and Principal Findings
We used multivariable regression in a population-based cross-sectional study, undertaken from 1994 to 1996, of 2537 Hong Kong Chinese residents aged 25 to 74 years with clinical measurements of …

Senior Adult Evangelism, David E. Moore Oct 2007

Senior Adult Evangelism, David E. Moore

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Senior adults need to personally know God and His promise of eternal peace. Seniors in this state of hopelessness and fearfulness need to be given the opportunity to hear and then be invited to receive the hope and assurance of personal salvation with the promise of eternal peace and security. The lack of evangelism which targets today’s seniors is a growing crisis. The number of unsaved seniors will continue to expand unless today’s churches and believers intentionally evangelize these needful individuals that God loves and desires to be a part of His kingdom for eternity.

George Fox: A Man Of Fiery Passion On A Mission For Jesus, Tom Crawford Oct 2007

George Fox: A Man Of Fiery Passion On A Mission For Jesus, Tom Crawford

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Impassioned by his personal experience of the “light of Christ” Fox became a dynamic, fanatically sincere speaker. He would speak the “truth” anywhere that God provided an opportunity for him to “convince” people that it was possible for them to “experience” the indwelling light of Christ to change their lives. He was not particular about where he spoke, for he would preach in barns, houses, fields, and in churches after the pries was finished. His ministry began in the northern part of England where he would preach, pray, and protest without reservation. Because he often denounced creeds, forms, rites, external …

Developing A Managerial Plan To Guide The Planning Process For Charity Events, Nicole Molina

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper was to develop a managerial plan to guide the planning process for charity events. A guideline was developed, tested and refined based on a case study of the Prostate Cancer Foundation charity held in October, 2007 at Wynn Las Vegas. A strategy arose from an adaptation of the standard business plans outlined by the Small Business Administration. The resulting business plan, detailed event checklist and timeline will be a guiding tool when planning other charity events.

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu Oct 2007

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Each year international business amounts to more than $1 trillion U.S. dollars (WTO, 2005). Both foreign investment and international trade are growing substantially, causing increasing interdependence of national economies as well as furthering the globalization of companies. Presently, Greater China's economy holds an increasingly large influence on the world. Despite the enthusiasm for increased economic exchange, many people have found that cultural differences have hindered their ability to efficiently conduct business due to their lack of understanding of the cultural differences among Chinese citizens living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. People engaged in the negotiations of agreements in …

Osteopontin Mediates Obesity-Induced Adipose Tissue Macrophage Infiltration And Insulin Resistance In Mice, Takashi Nomiyama, Diego Perez-Tilve, Daisuke Ogawa, Florence Gizard, Yue Zhao, Elizabeth B. Heywood, Karrie L. Jones, Ryuzo Kawamori, Lisa A. Cassis, Matthias H. Tschöp, Dennis Bruemmer

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Obesity is associated with a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation characterized by abnormal cytokine production and macrophage infiltration into adipose tissue, which may contribute to the development of insulin resistance. During immune responses, tissue infiltration by macrophages is dependent on the expression of osteopontin, an extracellular matrix protein and proinflammatory cytokine that promotes monocyte chemotaxis and cell motility. In the present study, we used a murine model of diet-induced obesity to examine the role of osteopontin in the accumulation of adipose tissue macrophages and the development of insulin resistance during obesity. Mice exposed to a high-fat diet exhibited increased plasma …
