An Extraordinary Patch Of Feral Hog Damage In Florida Before And After Initiating Hog Removal, Richard M. Engeman, John Woolard, Henry T. Smith, Jean Bourassa, Bernice U. Constantin, Daniel Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Feral hogs (Sus scrofa) are a particularly destructive exotic species in the United States (U.S. Department of Agriculture 1999), including Florida, which, along with Hawaii, is one of 2 states cited as having the most severe invasive species problems (U.S. Congress 1993) in the country. First introduced to North America by the European colonists (Conover 2007) hogs were one of the first invasive exotic species to take hold in Florida. They can transmit disease to livestock (Hartin et al. 2007) and humans (Conover and Vail 2007). They impose a variety of negative environmental impacts, including habitat degradation and …

Branch Rickey, '11, and Jared Genser, '01, may be 90 years apart in their graduation dates, but they are arm in arm as examples of the quality of students and graduates who pass through Michigan Law. Rickey integrated major league baseball when he brought Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Genser, founder of Freedom Now and a practicing attorney in Washington, D.C., is an internationally known champion of human rights who has won freedom for half a dozen prisoners of conscience in countries as different as China, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Myannmar.

University Of Notre Dame, The Law School: Educating A Different Kind Of Lawyer, Notre Dame Law School

About the Law School

Notre Dame Law School is like no other:

I say this from experience as an alumna, professor, and Dean. I believe that the Law School's unique character comes not only from famous campus buildings or the immediate public recognition of our name, but also from faculty and students who collectively dedicate themselves to the highest ethical and moral standards in the pursuit of justice. Thus is born "a different kind of lawyer." At Notre Dame, we strive to be a place where students and faculty who are interested in the integration of faith and reason, whether they are Catholics or …

Transformational Experience Through Liberation Pedagogy: A Critical Look At Honors Education, John Mihelich, Debbie Storrs, Patrick Pellett

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In the context of the national debate over the advantages and disadvantages of honors education, we developed a two-semester honors curriculum designed to draw upon the benefits of integrating teaching and research through student participation in an ethnographic research project. This paper recounts the process of the pedagogy and curriculum and discusses some key findings and outcomes of the students’ ethnographic study. Liberation pedagogy framed the critical questions addressed in the ethnographic study exploring how students in honors programs make sense of their academic selves and their honors program. We emphasize student-researcher findings concerning status and elitism among honors participants …

No Law: Deadwood And The State, Mark L. Berrettini Oct 2007

No Law: Deadwood And The State, Mark L. Berrettini

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Deadwood's final episode of season 3 opens with a monologue from theater operator Jack Langrishe (Brian Cox), a relative newcomer to the camp of Deadwood. Shown in a wide shot that spotlights him on the dark stage of his nascent theater, Langrishe ostensibly speaks to one of his companions, the actress Claudia (Cynthia Ettinger), shown in one medium reverse-shot. Yet Langrishe also speaks and performs beyond the theater to the residents of Deadwood and to the program's viewers extradiagetically as he sums up the tense state of affairs within the camp:

This camp is in mortal danger. The man …

Gold Nanorods Mediate Tumor Cell Death By Compromising Membrane Integrity, Ling Tong, Yan Zhao, Terry B. Huff, Matthew N. Hansen, Alexander Wei, Ji-Xin Cheng

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Folate-conjugated gold nanorods targeted to tumor cell surfaces produced severe membrane damage upon near-infrared irradiation. Photoinduced injury to the plasma membrane resulted in a rapid increase in intracellular calcium (shown in green) with subsequent disruption of the actin network, featured prominently by the formation of membrane blebs.

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Wildlife Disease Investigation Manual Oct 2007

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Wildlife Disease Investigation Manual

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

This manual is intended as a reference for people investigating wildlife mortality events or illness. Its primary objective is to ensure that appropriate samples are collected in the field, and that these reach a diagnostic laboratory in suitable condition for detailed examination. This will ensure an optimal chance to determine the cause and nature of the disease and to assess significance.

It is impossible to provide detailed guidelines that will be appropriate for all circumstances; our intent is to provide general directions that can be modified to fit the circumstances. Whenever possible, the laboratory that will be examining the specimens …
