The State Of Latino Health And Mental Health, Gregory Acevedo, Manny J. González, Victoria Santiago, Carlos Vargas-Ramos Oct 2007

The State Of Latino Health And Mental Health, Gregory Acevedo, Manny J. González, Victoria Santiago, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

Policy Documents

The Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños/Hunter College and Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service collaborated on this report to review the health and mental health status of Latinos/as. This analysis integrates national and local statistics from published reports and scholarly articles. Based on the analysis of Hispanic health and mental health, the authors have generated a set of recommendations for policies targeting the health and mental health needs of Latinos/as and promoting their overall well-being. Aside from these specific recommendations, they call for more disaggregated data collection about Hispanic subgroups.

Patient Satisfaction In Physical Therapy: Concurrent Comparison Of Two Instruments In Outpatient Settings, Susan E. Roush, Michelle Jones, Melissa Nassaney Oct 2007

Patient Satisfaction In Physical Therapy: Concurrent Comparison Of Two Instruments In Outpatient Settings, Susan E. Roush, Michelle Jones, Melissa Nassaney

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Background

Despite emphasis on patient centred healthcare, healthcare professionals have been slow to use validated measurements of patient satisfaction in physiotherapy practice. The aim of this cross sectional survey was to measure patient satisfaction with private physiotherapy in Ireland, for patients with musculoskeletal pain, using a previously validated survey instrument.

Methods

A multidimensional patient satisfaction questionnaire 'PTOPS', which assesses patient satisfaction with outpatient physiotherapy treatment, was translated from American English to European English, and relevant demographic and global satisfaction items were included. This was then circulated to patients with musculoskeletal pain (n = 240) for anonymous completion and return to …

A Monomeric Membrane Peptide That Lives In Three Worlds: In Solution, Attached To, And Inserted Across Lipid Bilayers, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Michael Segala, Oleg A. Andreev, Donald M. Engelman

Physics Faculty Publications

The membrane peptide pH (low) insertion peptide (pHLIP) lives in three worlds, being soluble in aqueous solution at pH 7.4, binding to the surface of lipid bilayers, and inserting as a transbilayer helix at low pH. With low pH driving the process, pHLIP can translocate cargo molecules attached to its C-terminus via a disulfide and release them in the cytoplasm of a cell. Here we examine a key aspect of the mechanism, showing that pHLIP is monomeric in each of its three major states: soluble in water near neutral pH (state I), bound to the surface of a membrane near …

Ribosome Kinetics And Aa-Trna Competition Determine Rate And Fidelity Of Peptide Synthesis, Aaron Fluitt, Elsje Pienaar, Hendrik J. Viljoen Oct 2007

Ribosome Kinetics And Aa-Trna Competition Determine Rate And Fidelity Of Peptide Synthesis, Aaron Fluitt, Elsje Pienaar, Hendrik J. Viljoen

Hendrik J. Viljoen Publications

It is generally accepted that the translation rate depends on the availability of cognate aa-tRNAs. In this study it is shown that the key factor that determines translation rate is the competition between near-cognate and cognate aa-tRNAs. The transport mechanism in the cytoplasm is diffusion, thus the competition between cognate, near-cognate and non-cognate aa-tRNAs to bind to the ribosome is a stochastic process. Two competition measures are introduced; C (i) and R (i) (i = 1, 64) are quotients of the arrival frequencies of near-cognates vs. cognates and noncognates vs. cognates, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction …

Quality And Inspection Of Machining Operations: Review Of Condition Monitoring And Cmm Inspection Techniques 2000 To Present, John T. Roth, Laine Mears, Dragan Djurdjanovic, Xiaping Yang, Thomas Kurfess

In order to consistently produce quality parts, many aspects of the manufacturing process must be carefully monitored, controlled, and measured. The methods and techniques by which to accomplish these tasks has been the focus of numerous studies in recent years. With the rapid advances in computing technology, the complexity and overhead that can be feasibly incorporated in any developed technique has dramatically improved. Thus, techniques that would have been impractical for implementation just a few years ago can now be realistically applied.

This rapid growth has resulted in a wealth of new capabilities for improving part and process quality and …

Collectively, the observations indicate that the overall warming of the Arctic system continued in 2007. There are some elements that are stabilizing or returning to climatological norms. These mixed tendencies illustrate the sensitivity and complexity of the Arctic System.

Atmosphere: Hot spot shifts toward Europe

Ocean: North Pole Temperatures at depth returning to 1990s values

Sea Ice: Summer extent at record minimum

Greenland: Recent warm temperatures associated with net ice loss

Biology: increasing tundra shrub cover and variable treeline advance; up to 80% declines in some caribou herds while goose populations double

Land: Increase in permafrost temperatures

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Segregated School Settings, Sandra M. Sweeney Oct 2007

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Segregated School Settings, Sandra M. Sweeney

Education Masters

While most current research advocates for the inclusion of students with special needs, this researcher finds that segregated schools do have a place in the education of students with disabilities. A questionnaire survey sent out to administration, teachers, mental health staff, former students and parents of a segregated program reveals how important it is to have choices and alternative settings for students whose needs are not being met in a general education classroom.
