Katrina: The Storm – The Aftermath, Elizabeth M. Doolittle

The Southeastern Librarian

Katrina, the most horrendous hurricane to strike the Gulf Coast affected lives, communities, and business, everything in its path. The impact of the hurricane was strongest on Monday August 29, 2005 when it came ashore at Bay St. Louis, MS. The enormous eye of the storm actually struck several communities including Waveland and Pass Christian. Gulfport and Biloxi suffered the effect of the tremendous winds surrounding the eye. Both the preparation for and the aftermath of the storm produced widespread disruption to lives and activities throughout a large part of the Gulf Coast region.

Mrsa Prevention And Control In County Correctional Facilities In The Greater Dayton Area, Jeffrey Allen Webb

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Recently there has been an increasing number of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cases in correctional facilities around the country, including the Greater Dayton area. Considering the potential health impact of MRSA on correctional facilities it is important that facilities have prevention and control protocols in place. This study summarizes the prevention and control preparedness activities of county correctional facilities in the Greater Dayton area. The positive response rates for the control measures were 88.4% for screening, 83.6% for treatment, 80.6% for personal hygiene, 95.4% for environmental control, 80.4% for education and 84.3% for standard precautions. The study also compared rural …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Several months after we decided to make "Nature and Character Development" the theme for this Taproot, a disturbing Teaching and Learning Newsletter found its way into my mailbox. An article titled: Generation Next Comes to College ... dealt with our current cohort (Generation NeXt) of younger college students and issues such as "high school grade inflation in entering students, academic disengagement and consumer expectations while in college to difficulties entering the workforce and taking on adult roles when they graduate" if they do so at all. The author's thesis was that college faculty must adopt new teaching styles to accommodate …

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in 1955 as a major center for hydrologic research in the Northeast. The Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study originated 8 years later with the idea of using the small watershed approach to study element flux and cycling and the response of forest ecosystems to disturbance. Since that time, the research program at Hubbard Brook has expanded to include various physical, chemical and biological measurements collected by researchers from a number of cooperating institutions. Collaborative, long-term data are the keystone of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study and have provided invaluable …

Review Of Fermenting Revolution, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Want to help save the planet? Want to do so while enjoying a healthy and pleasurable experience? OK, then read Fermenting Revolution: How to Drink Beer and Save the World. Seriously, O'Brien makes a sound argument, often humorous, that drinking locally brewed beers can significantly assist the goals of the growing "sustainability" movement. He is the Director of the Responsible Purchasing Network at the Center for a New American Dream. The Center and this book are dedicated to challenging the "onslaught of corporate globalization" by putting into practice the wisdom of "thinking globally and acting locally."

A Functional Analysis Of Televised U.S. Senate And Gubernatorial Campaign Debates, William L. Benoit, Leann Brazeal, David Airne

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study extended previous research on the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse to investigate the nature of 21 U.S. Senate campaign debates and 15 gubernatorial debates from 1994 to 2006. Acclaims were more common than attacks or defenses in Senate (56%, 30%, 14%) and gubernatorial (68%, 30%, 2%) debates. Challengers attacked more and acclaimed less than incumbents in both groups of debates. Senate and gubernatorial incumbents used past deeds much more to acclaim than attack; challengers were prone to use past deeds to attack more than acclaim. There was no consistent effect of political party on functions of debates. …

Psychiatry’S Thirty-Five-Year, Non-Empirical Reach For Biological Explanations, W. Joseph Wyatt, Donna M. Midkiff

Psychology Faculty Research

This is our third article in a series that began with a special issue of Behavior and Social Issues in 2006. Here we briefly review our central points from the first two articles. First is that over the past thirty-five years, claims of biological causation of mental and behavioral disorders have gone well beyond the research data, for reasons that are largely related to psychiatry’s lost esteem and protection of its “turf,” as well as to the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry. Our second position is that claims of psychotropic drugs’ effectiveness have been overstated. We respond, as well, …

A Longitudinal Study On The Number Of Graduates From U.S. Colleges And University It Programs, Rick Weible Oct 2007

A Longitudinal Study On The Number Of Graduates From U.S. Colleges And University It Programs, Rick Weible

Management Information Systems Faculty Research

This paper examines the graduation rates for all types of degrees earned by students majoring in information technologies at U.S. colleges and universities. The numbers used in this report are based on graduation numbers reported to the U.S. Department of Education. These numbers show a growth in the total number of graduates between 1995 and 2005 from 103,039 to 187,237 with a peak in 2003 of 240,862. There is a sharp decline between 2003 and 2005. This decline can be linked to major events: the burst of the IT bubble and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. And there …

Human Parietal "Reach Region" Primarily Encodes Intrinsic Visual Direction, Not Extrinsic Movement Direction, In A Visual Motor Dissociation Task., Juan Fernandez-Ruiz, Herbert C Goltz, Joseph F X Desouza, Tutis Vilis, J Douglas Crawford Oct 2007

Human Parietal "Reach Region" Primarily Encodes Intrinsic Visual Direction, Not Extrinsic Movement Direction, In A Visual Motor Dissociation Task., Juan Fernandez-Ruiz, Herbert C Goltz, Joseph F X Desouza, Tutis Vilis, J Douglas Crawford

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) participates in the planning of visuospatial behaviors, including reach movements, in gaze-centered coordinates. It is not known if these representations encode the visual goal in retinal coordinates, or the movement direction relative to gaze. Here, by dissociating the intrinsic retinal stimulus from the extrinsic direction of movement, we show that PPC employs a visual code. Using delayed pointing and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we identified a cluster of PPC regions whose activity was topographically (contralaterally) related to the direction of the planned movement. We then switched the normal visual-motor spatial relationship by adapting subjects to …

Do Vegetative Patients Retain Aspects Of Language Comprehension? Evidence From Fmri, Martin R Coleman, Jennifer M Rodd, Matthew H Davis, Ingrid Johnsrude, David K Menon, John D Pickard, Adrian M Owen Oct 2007

Do Vegetative Patients Retain Aspects Of Language Comprehension? Evidence From Fmri, Martin R Coleman, Jennifer M Rodd, Matthew H Davis, Ingrid Johnsrude, David K Menon, John D Pickard, Adrian M Owen

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

A diagnosis of vegetative state is made if a patient demonstrates no evidence of awareness of self or environment, no evidence of sustained, reproducible, purposeful or voluntary behavioural response to sensory stimuli and critically no evidence of language comprehension. For those patients who retain peripheral motor function, rigorous behavioural assessment is usually able to determine retained function. However, some patients do not retain the ability to respond overtly to command and it is becoming increasingly accepted that assessment of these patients should include techniques, which do not rely on any 'motor action' on the part of the patient. Here, we …
