Background

Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen, causing a wide variety of diseases ranging from superficial skin infections to severe life threatening infections. S. aureus is one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections. Its ability to resist multiple antibiotics poses a growing public health problem. In order to understand the mechanism of pathogenesis of S. aureus, several global expression profiles have been developed. These transcriptional profiles included regulatory mutants of S. aureus and growth of wild type under different growth conditions. The abundance of these profiles has generated a large amount of data without a uniform annotation …

Nicotinamide Riboside Kinase Structures Reveal New Pathways To Nad+, Wolfram Tempel, Wael M. Rabeh, Katrina L. Bogan, Peter Belenky, Marzena Wojcik, Heather F. Seidle, Lyudmila Nedyalkova, Tianle Yang, Anthony A. Sauve, Hee-Won Park, Charles Brenner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The eukaryotic nicotinamide riboside kinase (Nrk) pathway, which is induced in response to nerve damage and promotes replicative life span in yeast, converts nicotinamide riboside to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) by phosphorylation and adenylylation. Crystal structures of human Nrk1 bound to nucleoside and nucleotide substrates and products revealed an enzyme structurally similar to Rossmann fold metabolite kinases and allowed the identification of active site residues, which were shown to be essential for human Nrk1 and Nrk2 activity in vivo. Although the structures account for the 500-fold discrimination between nicotinamide riboside and pyrimidine nucleosides, no enzyme feature was identified to recognize …

Effect Of Processing On The Composition And Microstructure Of Buttermilk And Its Milk Fat Globule Membranes, Pierre Morin, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Yves Pouliot

Dairy Science

The effect of cream pasteurization on the composition and microstructure of buttermilk after pasteurization, evaporation and spray-drying was studied. The composition of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) isolated from buttermilk samples was also characterized. Pasteurization of cream resulted in higher lipid recovery in the buttermilk. Spray-drying of buttermilk had a significant effect on phospholipid content and composition. After spray-drying, the phospholipid content decreased by 38.2% and 40.6%, respectively in buttermilk from raw or pasteurized cream when compared with initial buttermilks. Pasteurization of cream resulted in the highest increase in whey protein recovery in MFGM isolates compared with all other processing …

Amicus

Colorado Law has always been extremely proud of its alumni who choose to utilize their law degree to help serve the greater good. Acting as public servants, these graduates have chosen to eschew higher pay and better job security in favor of positively serving their communities. This issue shines a spotlight on a few of the many Colorado Law alumni who have chosen to walk this path.

Building Social Capital In Forest Communities: Analysis Of New Mexico's Collaborative Forest Restorative Program, Tyler Prante, Jennifer A. Thacher, Daniel W. Mccollum, Robert P. Berrens

Economics Faculty Scholarship

In part because of its emphasis on building social capital, the Collaborative Forest Restoration Program (CFRP) in New Mexico represents a unique experiment in public lands management. This study uses logit probability modeling to investigate what factors determined CFRP funding, which totaled $26 million between 2001 and 2006. Results reveal program preferences for projects that encourage collaboration and improve forest health, especially in poor counties. Negative determinants of funding include measures of small-diameter material utilization and whether a project takes place across multiple land jurisdictions. There is no evidence of bias toward funding any particular applicant type or land jurisdiction.

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha Oct 2007

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In Zimbabwe the need to incorporate indigenous knowledge in science education to reflect local cultural settings cannot be overemphasized. Current policies on science are situated in Western cultural definitions, thus marginalizing indigenous knowledge, which is misconceived as irrational and illogical. This study used qualitative research methods. Ten teachers were purposively selected and interviewed to gain their insights into problems faced in incorporating indigenous knowledge into science teaching. The study found that the problems were attitudinal, institutional, and systemic. Teachers were found to be conservative “gatekeepers” who exhibited negative attitudes toward indigenous science and supported maintaining the teaching of Western science. …
