Fifth Circuit Survey: Taxation, Michael Hatfield
Fifth Circuit Survey: Taxation, Michael Hatfield
Articles
During the survey period, the Fifth Circuit decided nine federal tax cases. Four of the nine cases were appealed from district courts. The remaining five were appealed from the Tax Court. Three of the Tax Court's five decisions (60%) were affirmed, and three of the four district court decisions (75%) were affirmed. Thus, the Fifth Circuit affirmed most of the lower court decisions (66%). Interestingly, only three of the decisions (33%) favored the taxpayer—EC Term of Years Trust v. United States; Garber Industries, Inc. v. Commissioner; and Estate of Baird v. Commissioner—even though the Fifth Circuit …

Feral Swine Action Plan For Oregon, Mark Sytsma, Arick Christopher Rouhe
Feral Swine Action Plan For Oregon, Mark Sytsma, Arick Christopher Rouhe
Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations
Feral swine are defined as free roaming animals of the genus Sus that are not being held under domestic management or confinement. Swine have spread from Europe and Russia to habitats around the world via human introduction. Currently, feral swine populations are established on every continent except Antarctica. Unlike other large mammal invaders, swine have a high reproductive capacity and are omnivorous, which allows for a quick assimilation into most habitats. Once a breeding population is established in an area, the population can quickly increase and negatively impact the ecosystem. A successful invasion of feral swine is difficult, and sometimes …

Demonstrations supporting human and civil rights, while often romanticized as a phenomenon of the past, are becoming more pervasive today, reflecting the continued forms of discrimination and oppression undocumented workers, individuals, and families experience. In the past few years, Utah residents have been engaged in their own battle to determine the level of support the state is willing to extend students of color interested in attending institutions of higher education. On the "frontstage" many of the state's universities echo a rhetoric of support for diversity. Some even go as far as to outline their commitment to diversity as part of …

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Introduction Increasingly, population modeling and systems analysis are being used to examine the complex issues that are at the heart of CP/IPM (crop production and integrated pest management) and biological control. The design of economically sound and sustainable crop management strategies requires a thorough understanding of the whole production system including arthropod pests, pathogens, and weeds. More than three decades ago, Huffaker and Croft (1976) stressed the need to rely on systems analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish this task. Soon the question arose as to how mathematical techniques employed in the analysis of physical systems could be adapted to …

A study was carried out at Karima Village in the Mwea Rice Irrigation Scheme in Kenya to assess the impact of rice husbandry and associated land cover change for mosquito larval abundance. A multi-temporal, land use land cover (LULC) classification dataset incorporating distributions of Anopheles arabiensis aquatic larval habitats was produced in ERDAS Imagine version 8.7 using combined images from IKONOS at 4m spatial resolution from 2005 and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)™ classification data at 30-meters spatial resolution from 1988 for Karima. Of 207 larval habitats sampled, most were either canals (53.4%) or paddies (45.9%), and only one habitat was …

Introduction of irrigation projects in developing nations has often been blamed for aggravating the problem of mosquito-borne diseases by creating ideal larval habitats for vector mosquitoes. However, whereas several studies have demonstrated the relationship between malaria vectors and irrigation, little work has been done on culicine mosquitoes despite their potential in transmission of filariasis and arboviruses and their significant biting nuisance in these areas. This study examined the diversity of Culex mosquito fauna and their larval habitats at two sites (Murinduko and Kiamachiri) in Mwea, Kenya over a 12-month period. The habitat types present at each site within a 200-meter …

Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, is a key pest of tomato in Africa. Surveys have been conducted in the last few years to search for predators associated with this pest in Brazil for introduction into Africa. Biological parameters of Phytoseiulus longipes Evans, one of the predators found in those surveys, were evaluated when it was exposed to different food items, including T. evansi, in laboratory tests. The predator had about the same oviposition rate on T. evansi and on Tetranychus urticae Koch; it did not oviposite when fed on pollen of Ricinus communis L. or Typha sp. When given the …

Infestation levels and parasitism of lepidopteran stemborers on maize were assessed in four agroecological zones (AEZ) in Uganda. The indigenous noctuid Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae) and the invasive Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Crambidae) were the most important stemborers recorded. C. partellus represented 77% of the stemborers in the Eastern AEZ while B. fusca was dominant in the other AEZs, accounting for 60-79%. The proportion of infested plants was between 16% and 45% and borer density between 0.2 and 1.0 borers per plant. There was no clear relationship between damage and stem tunneling, which is often used to estimate yield loss. Telenomus …

Effect Of Fertilizer And Pesticide On The Biocontrol Of Cereal Stemborer's And The Awareness Of The Introduced Parasitoid In Zanzibar, Ibrahim Abdalla Ali
All Master’s Theses
The exotic stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) causes the highest economic loss to maize and sorghum yield in the Islands of Zanzibar. A number of studies on its biology, ecology and management in Zanzibar have been conducted since early 1901 (Zanzibar Archive un-published report). However, so much still remains unknown about these pests. As a part of integrated pest management (IPM) strategy for controlling Ch. Partellus in Zanzibar, an exotic Braconidae larval parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes was introduced in 1999 as a classical biological control agent to supplement the indigenous Cotesia sesamiae population after being proved to be successful in Kenya. It was …
