Neurodivergence In Children's Literature: A Tool For Raising Young Readers’ Awareness To Lived Experiences Beyond The Neurotypical, Taylor Mellett
Neurodivergence In Children's Literature: A Tool For Raising Young Readers’ Awareness To Lived Experiences Beyond The Neurotypical, Taylor Mellett
Honors Theses
This creative thesis explores the lack of accurate and authentic representation of neurodivergence in children’s literature by creating an original picture book and paired lesson plan. The project highlights how literature has evolved since the 1960s while emphasizing the prevalent underrepresentation and misrepresentation of neurodivergent characters. Utilizing foundational scholarship and a review of current studies, the thesis identifies a gap in both literature and research regarding how children respond to neurodivergent characters and how such portrayals influence people's perceptions. In response, the creation of “Better Together: A Story of Three Thinkers” was developed as a picture book centered on three …

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations
Headache disorders are among the most disabling neurological conditions, affecting over 1.5 billion people globally. Despite advances in pharmacological therapies, major inequities persist due to underdiagnosis, undertreatment and limited access to effective care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Social determinants of health, including cultural meanings, language and health beliefs, are increasingly recognized as key drivers of disparities in burden, diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Traditional medicine, used by more than 80% of the global population, remains first-line care in many regions and continues to influence therapeutic choices in high-income settings. Major systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Unani and …

Standardized Home Blood Pressure Log Implementation For Patients With Hypertension To Increase Patient Awareness And Clinical Action, Ashley Alcala
Standardized Home Blood Pressure Log Implementation For Patients With Hypertension To Increase Patient Awareness And Clinical Action, Ashley Alcala
Doctoral Dissertations & Projects
Background: Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is recommended for hypertension management, yet primary care clinics often lack standardized workflows for distributing, collecting, and using home blood pressure (BP) data. Inconsistent reporting and limited patient understanding of their own BP trends, such as whether readings are stable, elevated, or unchanged, reduce providers ability to make timely clinical decisions.
Problem: Despite evidence supporting HBPM, patients rarely brought usable BP logs to follow‑up visits, limiting providers ability to assess BP control, identify trends, and make timely medication or care plan adjustments.
Approach: This project used a Plan‑Do‑Study‑Act (PDSA) model to implement a standardized …

Humanitarian Task Force
Humanitarian crises expose women and girls to heightened risk of unintended pregnancy due to increased risk of sexual violence as well as disruption in access to and provision of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. Unintended pregnancies in turn result in unplanned births and, in contexts with restrictive abortion laws, maternal morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion or miscarriage. This makes innovative, evidence-informed solutions to address unintended pregnancy that take into account the unique circumstances of women and girls in humanitarian settings critical. Evidence-informed solutions should consider how best to reach women and girls with SRHR services …

The Indian River Lagoon Through The Lens Of An Artist: Examining The Impact Of Growth And Development On The Lagoon's Water Quality, Lisa K. Skelly
Theses
This project investigates the ecological degradation of the Indian River Lagoon, a vital estuary on central Florida’s east coast. The research focuses on the intersection of habitat loss and water quality degradation, specifically as they relate to anthropogenic factors such as land development and nutrient pollution. Furthermore, the study evaluates the effectiveness of environmental art in fostering environmentally conscious behavior. I translated these findings into a cohesive body of work, including ceramics, fiber arts, and oil painting, utilizing site-specific materials sourced from the lagoon. By integrating these organic elements, the work aims to showcase the estuary’s natural beauty while highlighting …
The Judiciary's Arbitrary And Capricious Problem, Jack D. Malich
The Judiciary's Arbitrary And Capricious Problem, Jack D. Malich
West Virginia Law Review
The Supreme Court has not been shy in its efforts to change, and in some cases, overturn long-standing administrative law precedent. Yet in one area, arbitrary and capricious review under Motor Vehicles Manufacturers Ass’n v. State Farm Mutual Insurance Co., the Court has ostensibly not acted to modify any part of the doctrine. Recently, however, the federal judiciary has increasingly used arbitrary and capricious review to invalidate major agency actions over what seem to be somewhat minor procedural flaws. The increased stringency of such review has led to increasing conflict between the executive and judicial branch. Two Supreme Court decisions …
Consent Absent Consensus: A Principles-Based Framework For Institutional Sexual Consent Policies, Tammi Walker
Consent Absent Consensus: A Principles-Based Framework For Institutional Sexual Consent Policies, Tammi Walker
West Virginia Law Review
Title IX requires educational institutions to address sexual misconduct but provides no clear standard for defining consent. In the absence of federal guidance, colleges and universities operate in a regulatory vacuum, producing inconsistent definitions, legal uncertainty, and contested understandings of what consent requires. Without a structured framework, institutions struggle to balance survivor protection, due process, and practical implementation. This Article introduces a principles-based framework that supports clearer, more coherent consent policies. It identifies three interdependent elements of valid sexual consent: (1) Respect for Choices and Autonomy, which requires voluntary agreement free from coercion or pressure; (2) Informed Expectations and Transparency, …
Drawing Lines In The Substance: Questioning The Inconsistent Application Of West Virginia's Recidivist Statute In Cases Involving Controlled Substance Violations, Patrick Hassen
West Virginia Law Review
For decades, West Virginia’s recidivist statute required courts to sentence repeat felony offenders to life in prison even if their offenses were not violent. Over the years, the statute mandated life sentences for triggering offenses as minor as writing a bad check or failing to register a new phone number with the police. Unsurprisingly, the statute has come under its fair share of constitutional attack for violating the state Constitution’s proportionality principle. In 1981 the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia held the state’s proportionality principle requires a strict interpretation of the recidivist statute in favor of the defendant. …

Association Of Higher Body Mass Index With Imaging Escalation And Operative Complexity In Pediatric Appendicitis, Ryan T. Davis, Sahithi Pemmasani, Margaret Menoch
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Background: Obesity may complicate clinical assessment and ultrasound (US) evaluation in children with appendicitis, potentially increasing reliance on computed tomography (CT). At the same time, national pediatric quality-improvement initiatives and ALARA-driven imaging pathways emphasize reducing CT use and promoting US-first approaches. Data examining how body mass index (BMI) influences diagnostic pathways within these modern low-radiation protocols are limited.
Objective: To determine whether higher BMI is associated with greater CT utilization, escalation from US to CT, nondiagnostic US examinations, emergency department (ED) length of stay (ED-LOS), and operative duration in children with appendicitis.
Design/Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients < 18 years with surgically confirmed appendicitis presenting to a tertiary pediatric ED from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2023. Consistent with prior dataset methodology, encounters were identified through structured EHR query using ICD-10 and CPT codes and restricted to unique first visits. A total of 2,275 children were included; BMI was available for 2,012 (88%). BMI was analyzed in quartiles. Imaging modality (US-only, CT-only, or CT after US) and operative duration (proxy for case complexity) were evaluated. χ² and Wilcoxon tests and odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI were used. IRB approval was obtained (Corewell Health IRB No. 2024-128).

Women in the control groups were instructed to independently continue to follow the physical activity guidelines recommended by their gynecologist, whereas the experimental groups participated in a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise …
Reaching The Heart Of The Matter: Uncovering Novel Mechanisms Of Cardio-Neuronal Regulation And Therapeutic Implications, Olivia Sloan
Reaching The Heart Of The Matter: Uncovering Novel Mechanisms Of Cardio-Neuronal Regulation And Therapeutic Implications, Olivia Sloan
Honors Theses
Cardiovascular diseases and cancer are the leading causes of mortality in the United States and across the world [1-3]. Patients with heart diseases have been shown to have neurological deficits [4-6]. While various drug classes reduce mortality and morbidity in cancer patients, many of these treatments present life-threatening adverse effects, particularly cardiotoxicity and/or neurotoxicity.
To uncover novel mechanisms of differentiation of neuronal cells induced by cardiac cells. I hypothesized that cardiac cell-induced neurodifferentiation is mediated by noncanonical metabolic factors. To address this, I sought to identify which molecules are involved in the induction of neurodifferentiation of PC12 cells by H9C2 …

Purpose – This paper addresses a missing element in Wu et al.’s (2015) ninefold policy capacity framework: the ‘capacity for what’ question. Specifically, it explores the objectives toward which policy capacities are directed, focusing on how government capabilities and competencies can be utilized to either create or destroy public value. Design/methodology/approach – Through a literature review, the paper establishes the connections between public value and policy capacity. An illustrative case of value destruction, specifically, the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) experience during the early second term of the Trump administration, is used to demonstrate how policy capacity can be …

The Legal Framework For Direct Ocean Carbon Capture And Storage (Volume 1: International Law), Romany M. Webb, Korey Silverman-Roati
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
This paper focuses on the marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) approach of direct ocean carbon capture and storage (DOCCS), which aims to remove some of the carbon currently stored in the ocean and thereby enable it to uptake additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. DOCCS is still undergoing research, but early studies suggest it could have significant carbon dioxide removal potential. However, DOCCS could also present environmental and other risks, including from the construction of new facilities, the intake and processing of water, and the handling and storage of carbon dioxide. Careful siting, design, and operation of DOCCS systems is …

Medication deprescribing is a targeted strategy to reduce inappropriate polypharmacy. Patients in primary care settings have reported high willingness to discontinue medications, but this phenomenon is less well studied in hospital settings. In this explorative post hoc analysis of two previously described clinical trials, we assessed patients' attitudes towards deprescribing in two hospital-based cohorts: acutely admitted older medical patients (≥ 65 years) in the emergency department at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre (October 2018–April 2021) and multimorbid patients (≥ 18 years) referred to an outpatient clinic at Copenhagen University Hospital Amager (March 2019–December 2019). Among 104 and 72 patients in each …

INTRODUCTION: Functional connectomics studies leverage the power of interregional brain relationships using graph theory of glycolytic metabolism to establish neural connections and their roles in cognition and disease and to monitor therapeutic responses.
METHODS: Using a retrospective clinical population (N = 431) from ADNI, we evaluated disease changes using metabolic covariance analysis. In addition, we developed a novel region set enrichment analysis (RSEA) to detect brain functional changes based on metabolic variations. Results were aligned with transcriptomic signatures and clinical cognitive assessments (CCAs).
RESULTS: Our findings highlight sexual dimorphic changes across the disease spectrum, which suggest brain network reorganization occurs …

Invasive Honeysuckle: Using Remotely Sensed Imagery To Map Landcover Change At Taylor Fork Ecological Area, Avery Krahwinkel
Honors Theses
Invasive species can have detrimental impacts on biodiversity and local ecosystems and are frequently targeted by natural area management for treatment and removal. Two common species of invasive honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii and Lonicera japonica) decrease plant diversity and alter ecological systems such as food webs in Kentucky. Both species are found in abundance at Taylor Fork Ecological Area (TFEA) and difficult to effectively manage. Remote sensing tools like multispectral imagery can be used to efficiently locate and quantify the abundance of invasive honeysuckle at TFEA because of the unique spectral signatures of various landcovers. This study used a …

More Than Just Hyper: The Mislabeling And Overmedicating Of Adhd In Children Ages 5-10, Katlyn Waltz
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the frequency and consequences of the misdiagnosis and overmedicating of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in elementary school aged children, ages 5-10. The information within this paper utilizes recent evidence-based psychological and medical research done surrounding ADHD in children.
