Introduction To The Symposium Issue On Alternative Dispute Resolution Strategies In End-Of-Life Decisions, Carol B. Liebman Jan 2007

Introduction To The Symposium Issue On Alternative Dispute Resolution Strategies In End-Of-Life Decisions, Carol B. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

At about 8:30 p.m. on a spring evening approximately twenty-five years ago when I was living in Newton, Massachusetts, our telephone rang. It was the emergency judge on duty that week asking me to go to a nearby suburban hospital to represent a sixty-eight-year-old woman whom I'll call Mrs. P. She had been hospitalized for heart failure and was refusing treatment, saying that she wanted to die with dignity.

Mrs. P and her husband had traveled to Boston from her home, a small town in New York about five hours away, to meet their newest grandchild. When I arrived at …

An Analogue Study Of Patient Preferences For Exposure Versus Alternative Treatments For Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Carolyn Becker, Ellen Darius, Katherine Schaumberg

Psychology Faculty Research

Although several efficacious treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) exist, these treatments are currently underutilized in clinical practice. To address this issue, research must better identify barriers to dissemination of these treatments. This study investigated patient preferences for PTSD treatment given a wide range of treatment options in an analogue sample. One hundred and sixty individuals, with varying degrees of trauma history, were asked to imagine themselves undergoing a trauma, developing PTSD, and seeking treatment. Participants evaluated seven different treatment descriptions which depicted treatment options that they might encounter in a clinical setting. Participants rated their most and least preferred …

Best Practices For Implementing A Biodiesel Program, Sundaresan Sadashivam

Masters Theses

"The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has a mandate to utilize biodiesel blends in its fleets. However, they have not been able to meet this requirement due to various implementation issues. Therefore, this thesis presents a study to determine the best practices for implementing a biodiesel program. The study was conducted by soliciting information from Departments of Transportation and other agencies related to their biodiesel programs and practices. A list of best practices was developed and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to prioritize this list of best practices"--Abstract, page iv.

Bankruptcy Reform And The "Sweat Box" Of Credit Card Debt, Ronald J. Mann Jan 2007

Bankruptcy Reform And The "Sweat Box" Of Credit Card Debt, Ronald J. Mann

Faculty Scholarship

Those that backed the 2005 bankruptcy reform law argued that it would protect creditors from consumer abuse and lack of financial responsibility. The substantial increase in the number of bankruptcies over the last decade combined with the perception of systemwide abuse apparently convinced legislators from both political parties that the backers had a point. Thus, Congress enacted amendments to the Bankruptcy Code that – if effective – would fundamentally change the core policies underlying the consumer bankruptcy system in this country. The rhetoric surrounding the reform debates pressed the idea that if borrowers had to repay more of their debts, …

The Practice Of Value – Reply, Joseph Raz Jan 2007

The Practice Of Value – Reply, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

The privilege of having three sets of extensive and hard-hitting comments on one's work is as welcome as it is rare, and especially so on this occasion as the lectures were, for me, but the first (well, not entirely first) stab at a subject I hope to explore at greater length. The reflections that follow will respond to some of the criticisms, but will not be a point by point reply. I will use the occasion to clarify some obscurities in the lectures, and to contrast my view with some of my critics' own positions. I will proceed thematically, starting …

Reconfiguring Industrial Policy: A Framework With An Application To South Africa, Ricardo Hausmann, Dani Rodrik, Charles F. Sabel

Faculty Scholarship

The main purpose of industrial policy is to speed up the process of structural change towards higher productivity activities. This paper builds on our earlier writings to present an overall design for the conduct of industrial policy in a low- to middle-income country. It is stimulated by the specific problems faced by South Africa and by our discussions with business and government officials in that country. We present specific recommendations for the South African government in the penultimate section of the paper.

Sexual Minority Youth In The Research Literature : What Kind Of Coverage Is The Field Of School Psychology Providing?, Jill Hayes White

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The amount of coverage sexual minority youth have received in the research literature over the past 15 years was examined. A content analysis of all research articles published in Psychology in the Schools and The Journal of School Psychology from 1990 to 2005 was conducted. Comparisons were made between the topic areas receiving the most coverage in 1990 versus 2005. Results revealed that issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth were discussed in only 0.4% of the articles. Topic areas receiving the most coverage included assessment, intervention, ethical and professional issues as well as race and diversity issues, …

The Effects Of Facial Attractiveness, Weight, And Immediacy On Social Influence: A Test Of Dynamic Social Impact, Melinda Bullock Jan 2007

The Effects Of Facial Attractiveness, Weight, And Immediacy On Social Influence: A Test Of Dynamic Social Impact, Melinda Bullock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Social impact theory (Latane, 1981) explains social influence as a multiplicative function of strength, immediacy, and number. Dynamic social impact theory (Latane, 1996a) states that four phenomena occur as a result of social influence: a) clustering (those living close together have similar attitudes), b) correlation (once unrelated attitudes become associated), c) consolidation (reduction in overall attitude variance), and d) continuing diversity (in spite of social influence attitudes diversity persists). This study used these two theories to examine how facial attractiveness, weight, and immediacy affect social influence. It. was expected that clustering, correlation, and consolidation would occur to a greater extent …

Evaluating Katrina: A Snapshot Of Renters’ Rights Following Disasters, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod, Olympia Duhart

Faculty Publications

Hurricane Katrina destroyed the homes of many people living in parts of the Gulf Region. The storm displaced as many as 800,000 victims and it is still difficult for them to return home. Consequently, many homeowners have turned to renting because of the slow recovery process. Renters face added difficulties; they are often the last in line for government benefits and other assistance. There is much hostility towards the rights of renters, creating even more difficulties for them.

This article focuses on the difficulties evacuee renters faced in New Orleans following the disaster. This article discusses legislation and attempted legislation …

Missing The Link: The Importance Of Keeping Ecosystems Intact And What The Endangered Species Act Suggests We Do About It, Kalyani Robbins Jan 2007

Missing The Link: The Importance Of Keeping Ecosystems Intact And What The Endangered Species Act Suggests We Do About It, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

The Endangered Species Act was created in response to a rapid decline in species biodiversity. Although Congress chose direct protection of individual species as its tool, protecting ecosystems (a necessary component of biodiversity) was clearly one of the goals for which that tool was to be used. A species can be abundant in some areas and declining in others, such that protecting the entire species does not make sense. Congress dealt with this issue by amending the Endangered Species Act in 1978 to allow for protection of “distinct population segments,” thereby allowing the population in decline to be protected in …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The role of culture in the geography of health and technological hazard perception research is an important and relatively recent avenue of research. This dissertation contributes to this research by exploring cross-cultural differences in health and risk perceptions and by examining the relationship between health and place. It involves an in-depth examination of perceptions and meaning of health, as they exist in the local context. It is the first geographical research conducted with individual members of the Old Order Mennonite community considering perceptions of health, technological hazard and understandings of environmental risk.

The studied communities are situated at an agricultural/industrial …

Validation Of The Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 (Sri-25) With Chinese And American College Students, Qijuan Fang Jan 2007

Validation Of The Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 (Sri-25) With Chinese And American College Students, Qijuan Fang

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 (SRl-25; Osman et al., 2004) among Chinese and American college students. This instrument was designed to tap into the factors that help defend against suicidal thoughts and behaviors and includes three factors: Internal Protective (IP), External Protective (EP), and Emotional Control (EC). Three hundred and eighteen Chinese college students and 328 American college students completed the Chinese or English version of the SRI-25, the Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency scale (MAST; Orbach et al., 1991), and the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R; Osman et al., 2001). American participants scored significantly higher on …
