The United States (U.S.) and Canada will experience climate changes through direct effects of local changes (e.g., temperature, precipitation and extreme weather events), as well as through indirect effects, transmitted among regions by interconnected economies and migrations of humans and other species. Variations in wealth and geography, however, lead to an uneven distribution of likely impacts, vulnerabilities and capacities to adapt. This chapter reviews and synthesises the state of knowledge on direct and indirect impacts, vulnerability and adaptations for North America (comprising Canada and the U.S). Hawaii and other U.S. protectorates are discussed in Chapter 16 on Small Islands, and …

To Vote Or Not To Vote: The New Challenge To Mexican Democracy, Elizabeth Thea Harrington Jan 2007

To Vote Or Not To Vote: The New Challenge To Mexican Democracy, Elizabeth Thea Harrington

Honors Theses

Mexico is country which has successfully transitioned from authoritarianism to a functioning young democracy. Yet the democratic stability of Mexico is already at risk due to a trend of declining voter turnout. Despite the most competitive elections in modem Mexican history, voter participation in 2006 was only 58%, down nearly 20% from 1994. Though a variety of reasons contribute to decreasing voter turnout, the predominant factor in Mexico is disillusionment, which manifests itself in the Mexican population because of four principal causes: widespread cormption, government inefficiency, election fraud, and a lack of change in the daily lives of the people. …

Bipartisan Efforts To Deter Human Rights Violations On The U.S.-Mexico Border, James Scott Jimenez Jan 2007

Bipartisan Efforts To Deter Human Rights Violations On The U.S.-Mexico Border, James Scott Jimenez

Honors Theses

For my thesis, I wanted to look at the movement of human rights of legal and illegal immigrants across the U.S.- Mexico border. I researched the theory of human rights in general, the history of the U.S.- Mexico border and how it became violent and dangerous for potential immigrants, the previous efforts of both the United States and Mexico to improve the situation along the border as well as future plans of both countries’ administrations to solve the problem. I found that both countries have put forth efforts in regards to binational coordination along the border in order to deter …

Bowen Family Systems Theory In The Life And Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Allison Brooke Morgan Jan 2007

Bowen Family Systems Theory In The Life And Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Allison Brooke Morgan

Honors Theses

For my thesis I researched Bowen Family Systems Theory, a psychological theory that concentrates, not on the individual, but rather on the system within which an individual is involved as a means of explaining behavior. After further explaining this theory in terms of its eight concepts, I looked at the life of Ernest Hemingway, his relationships, his writing style and central theme, his success, and his hardships. For his works, I concentrated on Hemingway’s collection of orgamc short stories entitled In Our Time for the application of Bowen Theory. My research has led me to conclude that Hemingway managed anxiety …

A Comparative Analysis Of Institutions, Policies, And Vehicle Emissions Between The United States And The European Union, William Lee Ramsey Iii Jan 2007

A Comparative Analysis Of Institutions, Policies, And Vehicle Emissions Between The United States And The European Union, William Lee Ramsey Iii

Honors Theses

The following thesis undertakes a comparative analysis of the United States and European Union’s institutions in place for the decision making process concerning environmental policy, as well as certain policies that have come out of this process (most specifically those concerning vehicle emissions). Several concerns over the environment have come about in the last few years, and the problem of pollution is one that must be addressed. I will examine how the EU and US are dealing with these concerns about the state of the environment, as well as the processes that are involved in creating legislation to tackle the …

Teaching Parenting Skills In A Methadone Treatment Setting, Randy R. Gainey, Kevin P. Haggerty, Charles B. Fleming, Richard F. Catalano

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Family factors significantly affect children’s risk of substance abuse, delinquency, and other problem behaviors (Arthur, Hawkins, Pollard, Catalano, & Baglioni, 2002). Children of substance abusers represent a particularly high-risk population. Prenatal exposure to addictive substances and the medical complications that may arise are important factors that, from conception, place this population at high risk of drug abuse and other problem behaviors (Griffith, Azuma, & Chasnoff, 1994). As children of substance abusers mature, their lives are characterized by exposure to continued drug and alcohol abuse by family members, recurrent or chronic illnesses, frequent moves, financial troubles, legal conflicts, family disorganization, and …

The Effects Of Habituation On Separation-Distress Vocalizations In The Anxiety-Depression Continuum, Lindsey M. Louviere Jan 2007

The Effects Of Habituation On Separation-Distress Vocalizations In The Anxiety-Depression Continuum, Lindsey M. Louviere

Honors Theses

The chick model ofthe anxiety-depression continuum has been used to examine the disorder’s pathology and treatment outcomes. However, little is known about how habituation to different stressors affects the behavior ofthe animal. In this study, different groups ofsocially-raised chicks received habituation to the experimenter via handling, acclimation to the apparatus with a social companion, or acclimation to the apparatus under an isolated condition for 4 days prior to a 60 min isolation test in which the animal’s latency to vocalize and number of distress vocalizations were recorded. The latency to vocalize decreased and the number ofdistress vocalizations increased as a …

High-Resolution Vascular Imaging Of The Rat Spine Using Liposomal Blood Pool Mr Agent, K B Ghaghada, K H J Bockhorst, S Mukundan, A V Annapragada, P A Narayana

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High-resolution, vascular MR imaging of the spine region in small animals poses several challenges. The small anatomic features, extravascular diffusion, and low signal-to-noise ratio limit the use of conventional contrast agents. We hypothesize that a long-circulating, intravascular liposomal-encapsulated MR contrast agent (liposomal-Gd) would facilitate visualization of small anatomic features of the perispinal vasculature not visible with conventional contrast agent (gadolinium-diethylene-triaminepentaacetic acid [Gd-DTPA]). METHODS: In this study, high-resolution MR angiography of the spine region was performed in a rat model using a liposomal-Gd, which is known to remain within the blood pool for an extended period. The imaging …

Predictive Oncology: A Review Of Multidisciplinary, Multiscale In Silico Modeling Linking Phenotype, Morphology And Growth, Sandeep Sanga, Hermann B. Frieboes, Xiaoming Zheng, Robert Gatenby, Elaine L. Bearer, Vittorio Cristini

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Empirical evidence and theoretical studies suggest that the phenotype, i.e., cellular- and molecular-scale dynamics, including proliferation rate and adhesiveness due to microenvironmental factors and gene expression that govern tumor growth and invasiveness, also determine gross tumor-scale morphology. It has been difficult to quantify the relative effect of these links on disease progression and prognosis using conventional clinical and experimental methods and observables. As a result, successful individualized treatment of highly malignant and invasive cancers, such as glioblastoma, via surgical resection and chemotherapy cannot be offered and outcomes are generally poor. What is needed is a deterministic, quantifiable method to enable …

Computer Simulation Of Glioma Growth And Morphology, Hermann B. Frieboes, John S Lowengrub, S Wise, X Zheng, Paul Macklin, Elaine L. Bearer, Vittorio Cristini

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Despite major advances in the study of glioma, the quantitative links between intra-tumor molecular/cellular properties, clinically observable properties such as morphology, and critical tumor behaviors such as growth and invasiveness remain unclear, hampering more effective coupling of tumor physical characteristics with implications for prognosis and therapy. Although molecular biology, histopathology, and radiological imaging are employed in this endeavor, studies are severely challenged by the multitude of different physical scales involved in tumor growth, i.e., from molecular nanoscale to cell microscale and finally to tissue centimeter scale. Consequently, it is often difficult to determine the underlying dynamics across dimensions. New techniques …

Association Of Putative Enteroaggregative Escherichia Coli Virulence Genes And Biofilm Production In Isolates From Travelers To Developing Countries, Jamal A Mohamed, David B Huang, Zhi-Dong Jiang, Herbert L Dupont, James P Nataro, Jaime Belkind-Gerson, Pablo C Okhuysen Jan 2007

Association Of Putative Enteroaggregative Escherichia Coli Virulence Genes And Biofilm Production In Isolates From Travelers To Developing Countries, Jamal A Mohamed, David B Huang, Zhi-Dong Jiang, Herbert L Dupont, James P Nataro, Jaime Belkind-Gerson, Pablo C Okhuysen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is an emerging enteric pathogen that causes acute and chronic diarrhea among children, human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, and travelers to developing regions of the world. The pathogenesis of EAEC strains involves the production of biofilm. In this study, we determined the association between presence of putative EAEC virulence genes and biofilm formation in 57 EAEC isolates (as defined by HEp-2 adherence) from travelers with diarrhea and in 18 EAEC isolates from travelers without diarrhea. Twelve nondiarrheagenic E. coli isolates from healthy travelers were used as controls. Biofilm formation was measured by using a microtiter plate assay …

All In The Family: Atypical Hsp70 Chaperones Are Conserved Modulators Of Hsp70 Activity, Lance Shaner, Kevin A Morano Jan 2007

All In The Family: Atypical Hsp70 Chaperones Are Conserved Modulators Of Hsp70 Activity, Lance Shaner, Kevin A Morano

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Divergent relatives of the Hsp70 protein chaperone such as the Hsp110 and Grp170 families have been recognized for some time, yet their biochemical roles remained elusive. Recent work has revealed that these "atypical" Hsp70s exist in stable complexes with classic Hsp70s where they exert a powerful nucleotide-exchange activity that synergizes with Hsp40/DnaJ-type cochaperones to dramatically accelerate Hsp70 nucleotide cycling. This represents a novel evolutionary transition from an independent protein-folding chaperone to what appears to be a dedicated cochaperone. Contributions of the atypical Hsp70s to established cellular roles for Hsp70 now must be deciphered.

Relations Between Personality And Coping: A Meta-Analysis, Jennifer K. Connor-Smith, Celeste Flachsbart Jan 2007

Relations Between Personality And Coping: A Meta-Analysis, Jennifer K. Connor-Smith, Celeste Flachsbart

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Personality may directly facilitate or constrain coping, but relations of personality to coping have been inconsistent across studies, suggesting a need for greater attention to methods and samples. This meta-analysis tested moderators of relations between Big Five personality traits and coping using 2,653 effect sizes drawn from 165 samples and 33,094 participants. Personality was weakly related to broad coping (e.g., Engagement or Disengagement), but all 5 traits predicted specific strategies. Extraversion and Conscientiousness predicted more problem-solving and cognitive restructuring, Neuroticism less. Neuroticism predicted problematic strategies like wishful thinking, withdrawal, and emotion-focused coping but, like Extraversion, also predicted support seeking. Personality …
