Probation And Parole Officers Speak Out--Caseload And Workload Allocation, Matthew Demichele, Brian K. Payne Jan 2007

Probation And Parole Officers Speak Out--Caseload And Workload Allocation, Matthew Demichele, Brian K. Payne

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The article deals with the perceptions of the Probation and Parole Officers on making case load and workload decisions. Caseload is the number of offenders an officer supervised while the workload is the amount of time needed to accomplish a task. The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) provides baseline data in assisting policy-makers to resolve caseload and workload allocation issues. According to the article, officials should establish a definite goal to diminish recidivism through research-based processes.

Chlamydia Trachomatis Detection In Cervical Preservcyt Specimens From An Irish Urban Female Population, Helen Keegan, Fergus Ryan, Alison Malkin, M. Griffin, Helen Lambkin Jan 2007

Chlamydia Trachomatis Detection In Cervical Preservcyt Specimens From An Irish Urban Female Population, Helen Keegan, Fergus Ryan, Alison Malkin, M. Griffin, Helen Lambkin

Articles

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in urban women undergoing routine cervical cytological screening and to investigate the relationship with age, cytology, smoking status and concurrent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Methods: A total of 996 women (age range 16–69 years) attending general practitioners for routine liquid-based cervical smear screening in the Dublin area were recruited in the study of prevalence of C. trachomatis. Informed consent was obtained and liquid-based cytology (LBC) specimens were sent for cytological screening. DNA was extracted from residual LBC and tested …

Mutagenesis Of The Catalytic Triad Of Tissue Transglutaminase Abrogates Coeliac Disease Serum Iga Autoantibody Binding, Greg Byrne, Fergus Ryan, John Jackson, Con Feighery, Jacinta Kelly Jan 2007

Mutagenesis Of The Catalytic Triad Of Tissue Transglutaminase Abrogates Coeliac Disease Serum Iga Autoantibody Binding, Greg Byrne, Fergus Ryan, John Jackson, Con Feighery, Jacinta Kelly

Articles

Background and aims: Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) is an autoantigen in coeliac disease and the related disorder, dermatitis herpetiformis. The detection of autoantibodies directed against tTG is a highly specific marker of coeliac disease; however, it is unclear if there is a role for these autoantibodies in the disease process. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the catalytic triad of tTG is targeted by coeliac disease autoantibodies. Methods: A full-length wild-type recombinant tTG and a novel site-directed mutagenic variant lacking the catalytic triad were produced in Escherichia coli. Serum samples from 61 biopsy-proven coeliac disease and 10 dermatitis …

Identification Of A 17-Nucleotide Splicing Enhancer In Hpv-16 L1 That Counteracts The Effect Of Multiple Hnrnp A1-Binding Splicing Silencers, Ziaomin Zhao, Joanna Fay, Stefan Schwartz, Helen Lambkin Jan 2007

Identification Of A 17-Nucleotide Splicing Enhancer In Hpv-16 L1 That Counteracts The Effect Of Multiple Hnrnp A1-Binding Splicing Silencers, Ziaomin Zhao, Joanna Fay, Stefan Schwartz, Helen Lambkin

Articles

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) infections can in rare cases persist and cause lesions that may progress to cervical cancer. Cells in the lesions are not permissive for virus production, nor are cervical cancer cells. The intracellular environment is such that it prevents production of the highly immunogenic, viral structural proteins L1 and L2. One may speculate that inhibition of L1 and L2 expression is a prerequisite for persistence and cancer progression. We have therefore investigated how expression of HPV-16 L1 is regulated. We found that the only splice site in the HPV-16 late region, which is used to produce L1 mRNAs, …

The Interplay Between History And Religious Ambivalence In John Updike's Rabbit Tetralogy, Kathryn Sewell Gillen Jan 2007

The Interplay Between History And Religious Ambivalence In John Updike's Rabbit Tetralogy, Kathryn Sewell Gillen

Honors Theses

The protagonist of John Updike’s Rabbit Tetralogy, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, is examined and explained in terms of his ambivalence and spiritual concerns. Rabbit is commonly accepted as a socio-historical symbol - an “American Everyman” - but this explanation alone fails to account for his inclination towards the unknown. Combining Rabbit the symbol with Rabbit the individual allows for a more complete understanding of Updike’s intent to make a statement that is both political and theological. Rabbit’s continual movement between extremes (his ambivalence) is considered foremost. Rabbit’s indecision is a constant throughout the four novels, his most defining characteristic. Once this …

An Educational Divide: The Effect Of The Private School Movement On Mississippi Public Schools, Milton Oliver Fletcher Jan 2007

An Educational Divide: The Effect Of The Private School Movement On Mississippi Public Schools, Milton Oliver Fletcher

Honors Theses

In 1954, the Supreme Court decided that a young girl named Linda Brown could attend her neighborhood school, despite the color of her skin. This facially simple ruling sent shock waves throughout the entire nation, but none were as strong as in Mississippi. Over the next twenty-five years, integration with “all deliberate speed became more and of a reality as private, segregated schools began to arise all over the state. This thesis will examine the actual effect that the private school revolution had not only on public education but also on education in general within Mississippi. The effect will be …

The Absence Of Financial Feminism, Blythe Leigh Keenum Jan 2007

The Absence Of Financial Feminism, Blythe Leigh Keenum

Honors Theses

This thesis describes alumni donor behaviors for University of Mississippi double-alumni married couples and analyzes those behaviors through the lens of gender. I used data from the University of Mississippi Foundation databases. A subsequent review of scholarly literature dealing with gender and philanthropy gave additional context for analyzing results. These analyses showed a considerable tendency for UM double-alumni households to favor males’ schools across multiple variables and the presence of household bargaining is strongly indicated.
