Experience During The Early Stages Of Treatment With Antidepressant Medication, Noelle Lorraine Lefforge Jan 2007

Experience During The Early Stages Of Treatment With Antidepressant Medication, Noelle Lorraine Lefforge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There is an abundance of research on the psychopharmacological treatment of depression. However, recent controversy surrounding potential increases in suicidality with SSRI treatment has highlighted deficits in our understanding of antidepressant medication treatment. To explore the nature of changes in inner experience during the initiation of treatment with antidepressant medication we recruited three depressed individuals and conducted in-depth case studies of their experience over the first 10 weeks of treatment. The participants showed high degrees of comorbidity and different patterns of changes in symptoms over the course of the study. The one common finding was that none of the participants …

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson Jan 2007

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The evolution of search and rescue in Yosemite after World War II highlighted the ways in which park users and administrators negotiated the contentious discourses of technology, tourism, and wilderness in the modern national parks movement. The establishment of a technologically sophisticated search and rescue force provided free by the federal government blurred the lines between preservation and use in national park policy by allowing administrators to resist development and support wilderness while still providing a safe environment for recreation. The co-evolution of rock climbing and rescue also illuminated the resulting tensions between individual freedom, social responsibility, and class in …

Willingness To Pay Versus Welfare, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Willingness To Pay Versus Welfare, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Economists often analyze questions of law and policy by reference to the criterion of private willingness to pay (WTP), with the belief that people’s WTP for a good is an accurate proxy for the welfare that they would obtain from that good. For two reasons, the proxy is crude. The first problem is that people may not pay for all of the benefits they receive, and in such cases, use of WTP may lead in unfortunate directions, even or especially if welfare is our lodestar. Inefficient results may nonetheless increase welfare. The second and more fundamental problem is that people …

Do You See What I See - Reflections On How Bias Infiltrates The New York City Family Court - The Case Of The Court Ordered Investigation, Leah A. Hill Jan 2007

Do You See What I See - Reflections On How Bias Infiltrates The New York City Family Court - The Case Of The Court Ordered Investigation, Leah A. Hill

Faculty Scholarship

That the Family Court is ill-equipped to address the needs of the hundreds of thousands of cases handled therein is not news. Exploding caseloads, complex problems, and minimal resources are just a few of the ingredients that combine to undermine the Court's ability to fulfill its promise. What has been given less attention until very recently is the extent to which the Family Court's failures disproportionately impact low-income families of color. Any analysis of the Court's impact or efficacy must consider the context I have described in my observations of the Court- the images of black and brown litigants hurrying …

Classification Of Microarray Data To Predict Toxic Exposure, Tarek A. Seleem Jan 2007

Classification Of Microarray Data To Predict Toxic Exposure, Tarek A. Seleem

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a software system for the analysis of microarray data. Microarrays are a relatively new technology that can be used to examine the state of the genome of an organism at some instant in time. The challenge is the amount of natural variation in biological systems limits our ability to identify specific genes that may be sensitive to changes in an organism's physiology or its environment. The analysis software consists of three modules. The first module filters microarray data to reduce the complexity of the problem. The second module selects subsets of genes for evaluation using a genetic …

Biogeochemical Processes And Seasonal Effects In Flow-Through Mesocosm Reactors Simulating Constructed Wetlands, Sarah J. Tritschler Jan 2007

Biogeochemical Processes And Seasonal Effects In Flow-Through Mesocosm Reactors Simulating Constructed Wetlands, Sarah J. Tritschler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Due to their distinctive environments, constructed wetlands are utilized to remediate groundwater that has been contaminated with chlorinated ethenes (i.e. perchloroethene) and other such contaminants. This research focuses on vertical flow mesocosm reactors housed in a greenhouse at Wright State University, which simulate a constructed wetland on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. These reactors were studied to investigate the effects of vegetation and seasonal changes on the redox parameters present. Water samples were collected from six different reactors from late September/early October 2006 until August 2007. The reactors were sampled three days in a row and this sampling was done once …

The Development And Molecular Expression In Mammalian Cells Of An Ha-Tagged Plasmid Encoding For The Target Of Rapamycin (Mtor), Kevin S. Dougherty Jan 2007

The Development And Molecular Expression In Mammalian Cells Of An Ha-Tagged Plasmid Encoding For The Target Of Rapamycin (Mtor), Kevin S. Dougherty

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The protein kinase mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) is a master controller of cell growth and proliferation due to its ability to integrate growth signals and regulate translation through 4E-BP1 and p70-S6K. We developed four phCMV2-HA-tagged plasmids to overexpress TOR in mammalian cells: Wild Type, D2357E (Kinase Dead), R2109A (PA Binding Deficient) and, S2035T (Rapamycin Resistant) each verified by restriction enzyme digestion and direct sequencing. Plasmid DNA was overexpressed in COS-7 cells and the 289 kDa protein detected in Western blots developed with anti-HA and anti-mTOR antibodies. Kinase activity of the overexpressed protein was detected by in vitro phosphorylation of …

Parameters Affecting Mental Workload And The Number Of Simulated Ucavs That Can Be Effectively Supervised, Bryan A. Calkin Jan 2007

Parameters Affecting Mental Workload And The Number Of Simulated Ucavs That Can Be Effectively Supervised, Bryan A. Calkin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated performance and mental workload when an operator supervises multiple UCAVs. This study focused on the parameters that affect the operator's performance during a simulated UCAV suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) mission, which is expected to be the primary function of the UCAV. All three manipulated factors, including the number of vehicles to be supervised, vehicle airspeed, and difficulty level of attacks (targets engaged by either a single vehicle or multiple vehicles), affected both performance and subjective mental workload measures. A performance mental workload redline was defined as the point at which accomplishment scores no longer …

The Effects Of Physical Activity And A Single Gender Learning Community On The Success Of First Year College Males, Cory D. Taylor Jan 2007

The Effects Of Physical Activity And A Single Gender Learning Community On The Success Of First Year College Males, Cory D. Taylor

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970's and the passing of Title IX of the educational amendments to the Civil rights Act of 1964, the gender demographic at American colleges and universities has changed dramatically. Today the average American college or university is over 57% female, a number that is projected to exceed 60% by 2020. In addition to the fact that in comparison to their female counterparts, less male students are coming to college, we are also seeing that once in college, male students are less likely to persist through to graduation. This study investigated the effects of weekly physical activity within the …

The Characteristics Of Politically Connected Firms, Mara Faccio Jan 2007

The Characteristics Of Politically Connected Firms, Mara Faccio

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Evidence from firms in 47 countries shows that companies connected with officials have higher leverage and higher market shares, but they underperform nonconnected companies on an accounting basis. Differences between connected and unconnected firms become particularly pronounced when political links are stronger, and when connected firms operate in countries with higher levels of corruption.

Paths To Quality: A Child Care Quality Rating System For Indiana. What Is It's Scientific Basis?, James Elicker Jan 2007

Paths To Quality: A Child Care Quality Rating System For Indiana. What Is It's Scientific Basis?, James Elicker

Center for Families Publications

Paths to QUALITY is Indiana’s new statewide child care quality rating system (QRS), first implemented in 2008. The main components of most state QRS programs are: 1) a set of quality standards that apply to home-based and center-based child care; 2) a process for objectively assessing child care quality and maintaining accountability; 3) a system of training and technical assistance to help child care providers improve quality; 4) incentives to encourage providers to reach higher levels of quality; and 5) public information to inform parents about what the QRS is and how to use it when they make child care …

3M monitors are made to allow sample desorption directly in the monitor itself. The monitor comes with a snap-on elution cap that permits the desorbing solvent to be injected into the monitor. The solution is then poured into sample vials for analysis. 3M monitors use standard analytical methods: gas chromatography for the organic vapor monitor and ethylene oxide monitor, and colorimetry for the formaldehyde monitor.

Electro Osmotic Pulse Technology For Prevention Of Water Intrusion In Concrete Structure, Purdue Ect Team Jan 2007

Electro Osmotic Pulse Technology For Prevention Of Water Intrusion In Concrete Structure, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

Groundwater intrusion into a building can cause serious structural degradation, corrosion of expensive mechanical equipment. ElectroOsmotic Pulse (EOP) technology is based on the concept of electroosmosis; the movement of an electrically charged ion in a liquid under the influence of an external electric field. EOP not only eliminates water-seepage problems from the interior of the structure without excavation, but it further mitigates corrosion damage to mechanical equipment and reduces the interior relative humidity of the basements.

Rapid In-Situ Load Testing, Purdue Ect Team Jan 2007

Rapid In-Situ Load Testing, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

Load tests and structural monitoring are used to gain information regarding the health and performance of an existing structure. Both are more representative than analytical approaches to evaluate the structure, especially when little is known about the structure's geometry and composition. Rapid in-situ load testing is intended to be much simpler and can be carried out in a fraction of the time and at a much lower cost. The testing procedure was originally developed at Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, University of Missouri-Rolla to offer a non-destructive yet conclusive demonstration of the performance of new construction techniques and technologies.

Pipeman:Safety In Trenches, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

Even though heavy construction equipment such as a crane or backhoe excavator, is used to perform the task of pipe laying in the trench, workers are required to be inside the trench to guide the excavation, pipe laying, and final alignment. Work place safety has become a major concern in the construction industry over the past few decades, and trench cave-ins have caused serious and often fatal injuries to workers in the United States. The Construction Automation and Robotics Laboratory(CARL) at North Carolina State University has developed an alternative which involves advanced new technology: the prototype robotic excavation and pipe …
