In-Situ And Simultaneous Measurements Of Size And Charge Distributions Of Dust On Mars: Instrumentation And Analysis, Praveen Kumar Srirama Jan 2007

In-Situ And Simultaneous Measurements Of Size And Charge Distributions Of Dust On Mars: Instrumentation And Analysis, Praveen Kumar Srirama

Theses and Dissertations

Martian dust characterization is important for minimizing the effects of abrasion, adhesion, corrosion, and damage to mission hardware, and also to reduce the effect on human health during future robotic and human exploratory missions. Characterizing the particle size and charge on Mars dust will help in the development of techniques for dust mitigation. Presently there is no miniature instrument which is capable of in-situ and real time measurements on Mars. In order to simultaneously analyze the particle size and charge of Mars dust, a Dust Particle Analyzer (DPA) has been developed and tested which is based on a Laser Doppler …

Model Estimation Of Land-Use Effects On Water Levels Of Northern Prairie Wetlands, Richard A. Voldseth, W.Carter Johnson, Tagir Gilmanov, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Bruce V. Millett Jan 2007

Model Estimation Of Land-Use Effects On Water Levels Of Northern Prairie Wetlands, Richard A. Voldseth, W.Carter Johnson, Tagir Gilmanov, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Bruce V. Millett

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region exist in a matrix of grassland dominated by intensive pastoral and cultivation agriculture. Recent conservation management has emphasized the conversion of cultivated farmland and degraded pastures to intact grassland to improve upland nesting habitat. The consequences of changes in land-use cover that alter watershed processes have not been evaluated relative to their effect on the water budgets and vegetation dynamics of associated wetlands. We simulated the effect of upland agricultural practices on the water budget and vegetation of a semipermanent prairie wetland by modifying a previously published mathematical model (WETSIM). Watershed cover/landuse practices were …

Standard Setting In Human Rights: Critique And Prognosis, Makau Wa Mutua

Journal Articles

This article interrogates the processes and politics of standard setting in human rights. It traces the history of the human rights project and critically explores how the norms of the human rights movement have been created. This article looks at how those norms are made, who makes them, and why. It focuses attention on the deficits of the international order, and how that order - which is defined by multiple asymmetries - determines the norms and the purposes they serve. It identifies areas for further norm development and concludes that norm-creating processes must be inclusive and participatory to garner legitimacy …

Section of Internal Medicine

Cardiac surgery for correction or palliation of congenital cardiac disease in infancy and childhood remains a privilege that is rarely accessible to two-thirds of the world’s population. This imbalance has created a unique spectrum of illness in patients with underlying congenital cardiac disease and complicating infective endocarditis in developing countries, including Pakistan. In this study, we characterize endocarditis as seen in such patients presenting in Karachi.

We reviewed retrospectively patients admitted to Aga Khan University with underlying congenitally malformed hearts and endocarditis between 1991 and 2004.

We identified 48 patients with endocarditis according to the modified Duke Criterions, with just …

Long Term Monitoring Of A Deep-Water Coral Reef: Effects Of Bottom Trawling., John K. Reed, Christopher C. Koenig, Andrew N. Shepard, R. G. Gilmore

Faculty Scholarship

The deep-water Oculina coral reef ecosystem is unique and exists solely off the east coast of central Florida. Oculina varicosa forms azooxanthellate colonies up to 2 m in diameter which coalesce into dense thickets on 20-m tall mounds that are thousands of years old. Recently restored videotapes that were made in the 1970s with the Johnson-Sea-Link submersibles show large breeding aggregations of grouper associated with the coral habitat. Historical photographic surveys provide evidence of the status and health of the reefs prior to heavy fishing and trawling activities of the 1980s and 1990s. Recent quantitative analyses by point count of …

Coaching Styles And How They Relate To The Sport Of Men’S Basketball, Jonathan Bruce Nelson Jan 2007

Coaching Styles And How They Relate To The Sport Of Men’S Basketball, Jonathan Bruce Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to describe the three main coaching styles utilized by basketball coaches. Coaches are constantly trying to find ways to improve their coaching style, and solidify that coaching personality which will produce the maximum results. Since the inception of basketball over one hundred years ago, the style of basketball coaching has paralleled teaching styles of the same era being somewhat authoritarian and dictatorial in nature. It appears that the trend over the last ten to fifteen years has witnessed modifications based on more cooperative techniques between coaches and athletes. Athletes have also appeared to have …

Guided Reading In Early Childhood Classrooms, Shyla Dawn Crosser Jan 2007

Guided Reading In Early Childhood Classrooms, Shyla Dawn Crosser

Graduate Research Papers

Guided Reading is a topic that has been discussed in great detail over the last few years. It has been discussed as "best practice" by Zemelman, Daniels, and Hyde (p.70) and is gaining popularity in classrooms across the nation. In teaching kindergarten during the last seven years, I have seen an enormous change in the curriculum at this level. I want my children to learn to read and want to keep up with the best practice in order to best fit the needs of my children; however, I do not want kindergarten to become first grade. This paper will explore …

Ready Or Not, Here They Come : A Look At Kindergarten Readiness, Sara J. Swyter Jan 2007

Ready Or Not, Here They Come : A Look At Kindergarten Readiness, Sara J. Swyter

Graduate Research Papers

This study examined the subject of kindergarten readiness. Both socially and academically mature and immature children were included in this study. An intervention model was presented for children who assessed behind their peers socially and academically. It was documented and reported that children who were assessed as below their peers socially and academically were able to make good progress through the intense one-on-one interventions performed; however, their growth was not enough to completely catch them up to their non-struggling peers. Results were shared and recommendations were made for future children academically and socially immature.

Technology reviewed was categorized according to the essential elements of reading as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension). Vygotskian and Piagetian theories were used to evaluate the technology reviewed. The review ends with a series of recommendations for teachers who may consider integrating technology into their curriculum.

Considerations For The Diagnosis Of Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Katherine J. Young-Kent Jan 2007

Considerations For The Diagnosis Of Personality Disorders In Adolescents, Katherine J. Young-Kent

Graduate Research Papers

The diagnosis of personality disorders in adolescents is a controversial idea. Personality disorders can bring about a stigma and may create effects on quality of life. Developmental implications should be considered when diagnosing adolescents with personality disorders, or any other mental illness, due to the incomplete formation of identity during adolescent years. There is also evidence that attachment patterns may influence personality disorder symptoms and should also be considered as a way to conceptualize personality in general. The current diagnostic systems may not provide a complete framework from which to conceptualize adolescents and ideas for restructuring the diagnostic system is …

Mental Imagery Use During Rehabilitation From Athletic Injuries, Kristin P. Williams Jan 2007

Mental Imagery Use During Rehabilitation From Athletic Injuries, Kristin P. Williams

Graduate Research Papers

Injuries can affect athletes physically, emotionally, and psychologically. When the injuries are treated, the clinician needs to address all of these areas to holistically take care of the athlete. One way clinicians can address these aspects is by using mental imagery. This paper addresses the topic of mental imagery and how it applies to rehabilitation. Research that demonstrates the neurophysiological responses to imagery, and how the brain responds to imaged actions, is analyzed. Topics regarding imagery and rehabilitation also investigate the different types of imagery and how to use them within treatment programs. Individual case studies show success when treating …

Experience During The Early Stages Of Treatment With Antidepressant Medication, Noelle Lorraine Lefforge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There is an abundance of research on the psychopharmacological treatment of depression. However, recent controversy surrounding potential increases in suicidality with SSRI treatment has highlighted deficits in our understanding of antidepressant medication treatment. To explore the nature of changes in inner experience during the initiation of treatment with antidepressant medication we recruited three depressed individuals and conducted in-depth case studies of their experience over the first 10 weeks of treatment. The participants showed high degrees of comorbidity and different patterns of changes in symptoms over the course of the study. The one common finding was that none of the participants …

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson Jan 2007

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The evolution of search and rescue in Yosemite after World War II highlighted the ways in which park users and administrators negotiated the contentious discourses of technology, tourism, and wilderness in the modern national parks movement. The establishment of a technologically sophisticated search and rescue force provided free by the federal government blurred the lines between preservation and use in national park policy by allowing administrators to resist development and support wilderness while still providing a safe environment for recreation. The co-evolution of rock climbing and rescue also illuminated the resulting tensions between individual freedom, social responsibility, and class in …
