Understanding Personal Carers' Experiences Of Caring For Older People In Pain, Kristi Holloway Jan 2007

Understanding Personal Carers' Experiences Of Caring For Older People In Pain, Kristi Holloway

Theses : Honours

Pain is a complex phenomenon that can be challenging for staff working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) (Fisher et al., 2002; Twycross, 2002). A high prevalence of pain reported by older individuals has been reported and suggests that further study in this area is warranted (Higgins, Madjar & Walton, 2004). Research suggests that a significant barrier to effective pain management in the elderly is the provision of primary care by care staff who have little or no education about pain, pain assessment or pain management (Allcock, McGarry & Elkan, 2002). Studies have identified personal carers as being in a …

An Investigation Into The Application Of Data Mining Techniques To Characterize Agricultural Soil Profiles, Rowan J. Maddern

Theses : Honours

The advances in computing and information storage have provided vast amounts of data. The challenge has been to extract knowledge from this raw data; this has led to new methods and techniques such as data mining that can bridge the knowledge gap. The research aims to use these new data mining techniques and apply them to a soil science database to establish if meaningful relationships can be found. A data set extracted from the WA Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFW A) soils database has been used to conduct this research. The database contains measurements of soil profile data from …

Suggestions For Urban Water Conservation Planning: A New Mexico Perspective, Andrew Funk Jan 2007

Suggestions For Urban Water Conservation Planning: A New Mexico Perspective, Andrew Funk

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The need for a comprehensive water conservation plan in New Mexico is evident in its vulnerability to drought, climate change, and population growth. A state-wide plan needs to eliminate nonrevenue water loss and excessive end uses beyond the capacity of current policies. A three-step water conservation planning framework is introduced, and suggestions are presented that may empower New Mexico to cope with 21st-century resource challenges. The first step identifies the potential water and energy savings associated with efficiency and conservation improvements by disaggregating all urban residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors end uses. Step two identifies the institutional, statutory, technical, …

Multinational Enterprises And Workplace Reproductive Health: Extending Corporate Social Responsibility, Rebecca K. Atkins Jan 2007

Multinational Enterprises And Workplace Reproductive Health: Extending Corporate Social Responsibility, Rebecca K. Atkins

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Corporate social responsibility is a relatively new approach to the protection of human rights. While the human rights to whole-body health and workplace health are long-standing, the right to reproductive health is a new topic of discussion. This Note examines the right to reproductive health in the workplace and proposes that it would be best protected by imposing an affirmative duty on multi-national enterprises via corporate social responsibility. Origins of human rights, corporate social responsibility, and reproductive health are discussed before turning to the developing stalemate between multi-national enterprises and less developed countries.

Attack Of The Balloon People, Keith E. Sealing Jan 2007

Attack Of The Balloon People, Keith E. Sealing

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Any discussion of food security would, at first blush, seem to focus primarily on world hunger and other threats to the safety of the food supply, whether intentionally man-made (e.g., terrorism), inadvertently man-made (e.g., global warming), made-for-profit by industrial agriculture (referred to as "industrial food" throughout this Article), or "natural" although arguably man-abetted (such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease). And hunger is indeed a problem and likely to become more of a problem. However, this Article focuses on the long term threat to world health and world food security caused by the American way of eating; the …

Fast Food: Regulating Emergency Food Aid In Sudden-Impact Disasters, David Fisher Jan 2007

Fast Food: Regulating Emergency Food Aid In Sudden-Impact Disasters, David Fisher

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

A rich and varied literature has grown up around food aid,' in particular with regard to its use as a development tool, in response to slow-onset disasters (such as droughts and desertification), and in armed conflicts. Given that these applications make up the bulk of the millions of tons of food aid recorded annually and present some of the thorniest operational issues, perhaps it is not surprising that the regulation of food aid provided in sudden-impact disasters (such as earthquakes, tsunamis, wind storms, and floods) has not been as thoroughly examined.

Still, while the amount of food involved is comparatively …

This report is intended to evaluate the implementation of Senate Bill (SB) 172 in Kentucky's public schools. This law requires that all schools in Kentucky implement strict nutrition standards that apply to all foods sold during the school day. This report highlights the different methods used by selected schools in implementing the requirements in SB 172. In performing my analysis, I traveled to different schools in central and southeastern Kentucky to assess how these select schools were meeting the requirements of the law. Site visits allowed me to discuss implementation strategies with school administrators and aided in my understanding of …

Public Provision Of Service For The Elderly: An Empirical Analysis Of County-Level Senior Service Property Tax Levies, Brigitte Blom Ramsey

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Last year the baby boom generation began turning 60. Consequently, the number of senior citizens is expected to double by the year 2030. On average, a person reaching the age of 60 can expect to live an additional 22 years. (NCHS, 2003) Along with increased life expectancy comes a greater probability for chronic illness, physical impairment and loss of independence. Of those 85 and older, 55% will need some type of long-term care or personal assistance. (CBO, 2004)

A recent collaborative study, “The Maturing of America: Getting Communities on Track for an Aging Population”, notes that less than half of …

Do Property Assessors In Kentucky Value Residential Property At Fair Market Value?, Brian Smith Jan 2007

Do Property Assessors In Kentucky Value Residential Property At Fair Market Value?, Brian Smith

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Assessors are required, as mandated by the Kentucky State Constitution and KRS 132.690, to assess property at 100 percent of fair market value. Fair market value is defined as the price a seller would expect to receive in an open and competitive market. Evidence from data and analysis in this paper indicates that property is under-assessed by approximately 25 percent. Though urban areas assess at a slightly higher rate, this is offset by rural areas, which do a significantly poorer job. This has important implications for local communities in Kentucky that depend on property tax revenue in order to provide …

Nonprofits: Recruiting And Retaining Baby Boom Volunteers In Central Kentucky. An Analysis Of Volunteer Needs In Central Kentucky And Best Practices For Recruiting Baby Boom Generation Volunteers, Ashley R. F. Moore

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Statement of the Problem

Faced with tight budgets and expanding needs to serve and roles to play in the community, non-profit organizations have a shortage of volunteers. Especially desired are knowledgeable, passionate and dependable volunteers willing to serve on a regular basis. Although, the largest generation in our history, the Baby Boomers, which comprise 28% of American citizens and 77 million people, are retiring and acquiring increased free time, many are not being connected with volunteer opportunities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only one-third of those between ages 43 to 61 are serving as volunteers (US Bureau of …

Violent Personal Crimes On Campus: The Influence Of Size, Setting, And Police Presence, Chris Mckinney Jan 2007

Violent Personal Crimes On Campus: The Influence Of Size, Setting, And Police Presence, Chris Mckinney

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Statement of the Problem

Violent campus crime, in particular rape and aggravated assault, has become more pronounced in the last several decades. The judicial and legislative branches have responded through court decisions and legal enactments that require most universities to collect and report campus crime data. Many concerns have arisen as to the effectiveness and implications associated with such mandates. Some believe current laws do little to improve campus safety. Some suggested solutions to address campus crime have involved safety initiatives/programs and potential staffing increases to their campus police force.

Companies Positioned In The Middle:Municipal Wireless And Its Impact On Privacy And Free Speech, Nicole Alexandra Ozer Jan 2007

Companies Positioned In The Middle:Municipal Wireless And Its Impact On Privacy And Free Speech, Nicole Alexandra Ozer

University of San Francisco Law Review

When a city institutes a municipal wireless system, it is building a new communications infrastructure on behalf of its residents. Like our rights to privacy in our public telephone communications, individuals have the right to a municipal wireless network that respects privacy and free speech, allowing users to explore all that the Internet offers without worrying where information about their online activities will end up or how it will be used or abused. Cities have a duty to protect the privacy and free speech rights of their residents, and safeguards for these rights must be priorities, not afterthoughts.

Shaping The Energy Future In The American West: Can California Curb Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Out-Of-State, Coal-Fired Power Plants Without Violating The Dormant Commerce Clause?, Particia Weisselberg

University of San Francisco Law Review

The Comment highlights California's attempt to curb its use of conventional coal-fired power through an innovative law known as the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Performance Standard Act, which forbids California utilities from making long-term financial investments or procurement contracts with power plants whose GHG emissions exceed the performance standard. This Comments also examines how this innovative law may run afoul of the Dormant Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
