We Will Still Live: Confronting Stigma And Discrimination Against Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Malawi, Chi Mgbako, Tracy E. Higgins, Jeanmarie Fenrich

Fordham International Law Journal

This report presents the findings of this research effort. Part I sets out Malawi's obligations under international and domestic law regarding the right of women living with HIV/AIDS to be free from discrimination and also explores non-binding international documents that provide guidance to governments in confronting discrimination against PLWHA. Part I then explores the ways in which lack of sexual autonomy, economic dependency, physical and sexual abuse, harmful traditional practices, commercial sex work, sexual exploitation of girls and young women, and conceptions of male sexuality increase women's vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in Malawi. Part II documents widespread community-level stigma against women …

Environmental Spill-Overs Into General Community Law, Professor Dr. Jan H. Jans, Professor Dr. Hanna G. Sevenster, Jos M.P. Janssen

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article will illustrate that indeed, European environmental law is not just another sectoral policy area of the European Union (“EU”). Over the years it has proven to have a major impact on various general doctrines of European law. In that sense, European environmental law had (and still has) an important spill-over impact upon general European Community (“EC”) law. It is the modest ambit of this Article to illustrate some of the environmental spill-overs into general European law, specifically examining the role of the European Court of Justice (“ECJ”) and its case law.

Dialectical Tensions In Stroke Survivor Relationships, Kimberly N. Leezer Jan 2007

Dialectical Tensions In Stroke Survivor Relationships, Kimberly N. Leezer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stroke is an unpredictable and life-altering medical occurrence which causes immediate change in stroke survivors' relationships. Previous communication researchers have focused on the dialectical tensions experienced by stroke survivors themselves. This study sought to discover dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors, how those dialectical tensions compare to those experienced by stroke survivors, and how time affects the dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors. Sixteen spouses of stroke survivors participated in interviews, and five tensions were ultimately discovered: self-preference -- partner-preference, realism -- idealism, freedom constraint, fear -- content, and emotional release -- emotional reservation. Three dialectical …

Recurrent Burner Syndrome Due To Presumed Cervical Spine Osteoblastoma In A Collision Sport Athlete - A Case Report., Ilan Elias, Michael A Pahl, Adam C Zoga, Maurice L Goins, Alexander R Vaccaro

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

We present a case of a 35-year-old active rugby player presenting with a history of recurrent burner syndrome thought secondary to an osteoblastoma involving the posterior arch of the atlas. Radiographically, the lesion had features typical for a large osteoid osteoma or osteoblastoma, including osseous expansion, peripheral sclerosis and bony hypertrophy, internal lucency, and even suggestion of a central nidus. The patient subsequently underwent an en bloc resection of the posterior atlas via a standard posterior approach. The surgery revealed very good clinical results. In this report, we will discuss in detail, the presentation, treatment, and return to play recommendations …

“Practicing In Slow Motion”: The Development And Assessment Of An Interprofessional Clinical Education Curriculum For Law And Social Work Students, Lyn K. Slater Jan 2007

“Practicing In Slow Motion”: The Development And Assessment Of An Interprofessional Clinical Education Curriculum For Law And Social Work Students, Lyn K. Slater

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Interprofessional and interagency collaboration are currently considered to be essential features of professional practice for the provision of effective health, education and human services. Most major professional organizations have now acknowledged the importance of working collaboratively with other professions and have advocated that education programs prepare students to collaborate across professions through the development of interprofessional education programs. At this time there is little evidence to show that when professionals learn together that this enables them, in practice and in the future, to work more collaboratively to achieve client goals.

There is a gap in the current evaluation literature that …

Blood Assays In The Freshwater Turtle, Trachemys Scripta, With Emphasis On Methemoglobin Levels, Erin Melissa Floyd Jan 2007

Blood Assays In The Freshwater Turtle, Trachemys Scripta, With Emphasis On Methemoglobin Levels, Erin Melissa Floyd

Honors Theses

Confined Animal Feeding Operations pollute water supplies with excess animal wastes containing different sources of nitrogen. How can we measure the damage being done? Methemoglobin percentages give the degree of toxicity of nitrates and nitrites in the environment. Methemoglobin is a variant of hemoglobin in which the ferrous ion has been oxidized to the ferric state. In this state, oxygen can no longer be transported by hemoglobin which is detrimental to the organism affected. Blood assays were conducted on the freshwater turtle, Trachemys scripta. In addition to methemoglobin analysis other assays including oxyhemoglobin saturation, red and white blood cell counts, …

Growth And Immunocomptence In Parasitized Domestic Turkeys( Meleagris Gallapavo): Is There A Trade-Off?, Virginia Austin Harrison Jan 2007

Growth And Immunocomptence In Parasitized Domestic Turkeys( Meleagris Gallapavo): Is There A Trade-Off?, Virginia Austin Harrison

Honors Theses

Parasitic infection can prove to be detrimental to the condition, reproductive fitness, and survival of the host organism. During infection, an organism experiences trade-offs between functions such as growth, reproduction, and immunological activity as a result of limited resources. When challenged by infection, wild turkeys, adapted for survival, should fight the infection rather than invest in growth. Because domestic turkeys have been artificially selected to grow rapidly, I hypothesized that they would invest in growth rather than immunocompetence. To test this hypothesis, I infected domestic turkeys with coccidia and measured components of growth and immunocompetence. Turkeys were infected with the …

The Revenge Of The Past: Ethnic Nationalism, Soviet Nationalities Policies, And The Collapse Of The Ussr, Steven Montgomery Wheat

Honors Theses

The Soviet Union was a vast empire that included scores of ethnic minority groups, From its earliest days, the Soviet government was compelled to find creative ways to address the concerns of these various groups while remaining true to its ideological rhetoric. This paper outlines many of the governmental programs that aimed to appease minority groups through cultural, linguistic, and in some cases, administrative autonomy. The numerous instances in Soviet history during which these privileges were curtailed are also included. The Post-Cold War Security Dialogue, Melanie Collins Jan 2007

The Post-Cold War Security Dialogue, Melanie Collins

Honors Theses

This paper attempts to explore the relevance of new security concerns in the post Cold War security dialogue. This project is split in to two parts. The first part is a brief summary of what have been termed new security concerns. The second part is an empirical analysis of whether these security concerns have made it out of academic discussion and in to the mass media and political dialogue. This was determined via two sources: The New York Times and Presidential State of the Union Addresses from 1949 - 2007. Using The New York Times, the time periods 1980-1985, 1990-1995, …
