Stress, Fatigue And Workload: Determining The Combined Affect On Human Performance, Jessica Mock-Mclaughlin Jan 2007

Stress, Fatigue And Workload: Determining The Combined Affect On Human Performance, Jessica Mock-Mclaughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research generated a model that will help to predict, prevent, control and mitigate the occurrence of task related factors that negatively influence stress, fatigue, and workload; thus enhancing human performance. Past research efforts involving stress, fatigue and workload identified factors that influence a change in performance (Lan, Ji and Looney, 2003, and Hancock & Warm, 1989). Also, while some mathematical models have been developed within each respective area, however, there is no evidence of an integrated model describing the combined affect of stress, fatigue and workload. To respond to this research gap, a quantitative model representing the state of …

The Role Of Cultural Values In Organizational Attraction., Elizabeth Jimenez Muniz Jan 2007

The Role Of Cultural Values In Organizational Attraction., Elizabeth Jimenez Muniz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States' (U.S.) workforce is more diverse than in previous decades in terms of race, gender, and native language (Fay, 2001). Such demographic shifts have changed how organizations attract applicants and how they motivate, reward, and retain employees (McAdams, 2001). Furthermore, organizations benefit from diversity by: (a) attracting the best talent available in the workforce (Cox, 1993), (b) increasing their product marketability to customers (Deshpande, Hoyer, & Donthu, 1986; Redding, 1982), and (c) fostering creativity, innovation, problem solving, and decision making in employees (Thomas, 1999; Thomas, Ravlin, & Wallace, 1996; Watson, Kumar, & Michaelsen, 1993). Given such benefits, organizations …

The Relationship Between Mentoring And Elementary Beginning Teachers' Intent To Stay In The Teaching Field, Deborah Partridge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this survey research study was to determine if a relationship existed between mentoring for beginning elementary teachers and teachers' intent to stay in the teaching field. The key attribute analyzed was the significance of having or not having a mentor. Teachers' perceptions regarding mentoring were analyzed and teacher opinions of the most important elements of a mentoring program were discussed. Results indicated there was not a statistical significance between mentoring and teachers' intent to stay in the teaching field. The qualitative portion of the survey revealed that beginning teachers felt availability, accessibility, and receptivity of the mentor …

Perceived Influence Of The Portrayal Of Women In Beauty And Fashion Magazines On Body Image, Melissa Shrader Jan 2007

Perceived Influence Of The Portrayal Of Women In Beauty And Fashion Magazines On Body Image, Melissa Shrader

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation examines how women perceive that magazines influence the body image of self and others. Seventeen audio-taped in-depth interviews were conducted with college women who read beauty, fashion, and grooming magazines frequently. These interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed and the data developed into topics of importance. The findings indicated that informants perceived other women were influenced more by images of women in the media than they themselves were influenced. However, informants did not advocate behavior changes for others or hold pro-censorship attitudes. Other findings include favorable perceptions of magazines utilizing larger sized fashion models, negative attitudes towards advertising, …

The Relationship Between Admission Credentials And The Success Of Students Admitted To A Physics Doctoral Program, Teresa Wilkerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher developed this study based on the Hardgrave, et al. (1993)statement that for a doctoral student, it was "more than just standardized scores, previous academic performance, and past work experience ultimately affects whether the candidate will be successful in the program" (p. 261). This study examined both the subjective and quantifiable aspects of application materials to a physics doctoral program to explore potential relationships between the credentials presented in the application and the ultimate success of the admitted students. The researcher developed questions with the goals of addressing the problem of attrition in doctoral programs and gaining a better …

Does Safety Culture Predict Clinical Outcomes?, Katherine Ann Wilson Jan 2007

Does Safety Culture Predict Clinical Outcomes?, Katherine Ann Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Patient safety in healthcare has become a national objective. Healthcare organizations are striving to improve patient safety and have turned to high reliability organizations as those in which to model. One initiative taken on by healthcare is improving patient safety culture--shifting from one of a 'no harm, no foul' to a culture of learning that encourages the reporting of errors, even those in which patient harm does not occur. Lacking from the literature, however, is an understanding of how safety culture impacts outcomes. While there has been some research done in this area, and safety culture is argued to have …

Critical Thinking And Evidence-Based Practice In Problem-Based Learning Tutorial Groups: A Critical Case Study, Joanne M. Bortone

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Little research has investigated how problembased learning (PBL) instruction influences students' critical thinking and evidence-based practice. This research sought to ascertain if PBL instructional practices facilitated critical thinking and EBP; identify those practices; and, identify changes students made in tutorials.

A qualitative, twocase, critical case study design used pretest and posttests of the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) (Facione, 1990) and Self-Evaluation of EBP adapted from Straus et al. (2005) to select the critical case sample. Students who made the greatest gains from pre to posttest scores met selection criteria for the critical case sample and were invited to …

Renewal Of The Sacred Heart University Library: Progress Report, 2006: Executive Summary, Dennis C. Benamati

Librarian Publications

In early 2003, I presented the Provost’s Council and the President’s Cabinet with a plan for the renewal of the University Library. In October, 2003, I provided the students, faculty and staff with a document that made public our plan to revive library organization, infrastructure, collections and services. As calendar year 2006 has come to a close, so has the fourth year of the plan. Now that the fifth year is beginning, it seems appropriate that I report on our progress.

Catholic Students' Fatalism In Anticipation Of Transhuman Technologies, Stephen J. Lilley Jan 2007

Catholic Students' Fatalism In Anticipation Of Transhuman Technologies, Stephen J. Lilley

Sociology Faculty Publications

Findings are presented from a qualitative study in which participants from a Catholic university in New England, USA read a description of transhuman technologies (e.g., genetic engineering) and wrote lengthy responses indicating what they saw as the likely impact of these technologies on identity, society, and religion. In the subsequent content analysis, the responses were also examined for what Patrick Feng calls the “myth of technological determinism” — a sense that technological change is beyond human control. Most of the young men and women in the sample described negative impacts, identified a threat to religion and to their religious beliefs, …

The Story Of The Court-Martial Of The Bounty Mutineers, Douglas O. Linder Jan 2007

The Story Of The Court-Martial Of The Bounty Mutineers, Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

The true story of the 1789 mutiny on the Bounty is far more complicated than suggested by film versions of the event, which have emphasized the gratuitous cruelty of the ship's captain, William Bligh. The psychological drama that played out in the South Seas starring Bligh, the efficient disciplinarian, and his mate, the sensitive and proud Fletcher Christian, led to, among other things: one of the most amazing navigational feats in maritime history, the founding of a British settlement that continues to exist today, and a court-martial in England that answered the question of which of ten captured mutineers should …

A Psychoeducational Group Designed For The Social Supporters Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Parents, Tara Jordan Jan 2007

A Psychoeducational Group Designed For The Social Supporters Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Parents, Tara Jordan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims 5,000 to 7,000 infant lives each year. The deaths undoubtedly cause a sense of guilt, depression and hopelessness among survivors; specifically the parents. Many people supporting SIDS parents tend to feel uncomfortable around them and thus avoid the grieving family altogether. Many SIDS parents state that while their friends and family are trying to be helpful and supportive, many of their attempts actually are hurtful. A psychoeducational group was developed for the social supporters of SIDS parents, allowing its members to become better equipped to help support the grieving parents and to give them …
