Gender Bias And The Adhd Diagnosis Gap, Ashlee Depass
Gender Bias And The Adhd Diagnosis Gap, Ashlee Depass
Student Publications and Presentations
Public conversations often question whether Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) receives too many diagnoses. At the same time, many girls and women report years of struggling without recognition or support. This contrast suggests that the issue may not simply be how often clinicians diagnose ADHD, but how they recognize it and whose symptoms prompt evaluation. ADHD does not present identically across individuals. Boys frequently display hyperactive or disruptive behaviors that draw attention in school and clinical settings. Girls more commonly experience inattentiveness, emotional intensity, or internal distress that may not disrupt others in obvious ways. When adults interpret these behaviors differently, they …
The Effects Of The Opioid Crisis On Fentanyl Exhibitions, Onnalee Floriano
The Effects Of The Opioid Crisis On Fentanyl Exhibitions, Onnalee Floriano
Student Publications and Presentations
The opioid crisis is an epidemic in which fentanyl related overdoses are becoming more common. With the increase in prescription and recreational drugs, there has been a rise in drug combinations and exhibitions in the United States. Fentanyl has been found to be combined with other opiates like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, creating a higher risk of overdoses when being used recreationally. The National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS) is designed to collect drugs and understand the trends in where they are being seized. From 2015 to 2019, the NFLIS collected drugs in four groups, fentanyl alone, and fentanyl combinations …
Environmental-Friendly Straws As A Source Of Forever Chemicals, Sarah Allen
Environmental-Friendly Straws As A Source Of Forever Chemicals, Sarah Allen
Student Publications and Presentations
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, (PFAS) create the water-resistant layer found on environmentally-friendly straws, such as paper and agave-based straws. Upon prolonged exposure, PFAS can cause serious health problems in the human body, such as decreased antibiotic responses. Due to the increased use of environmentally-friendly straws, we examined the transfer of PFAS to liquids that are representing beverages to determine if a risk of exposure is present or increased with the usage of the straws. This study examined both traditional paper straws and agave straws under the following experimental conditions: length of exposure and pH. After submerging the straws in the …
The Opioid Crisis In The United States Vs. Portugal’S Public Health Approach, Ciara Dillon
The Opioid Crisis In The United States Vs. Portugal’S Public Health Approach, Ciara Dillon
Student Publications and Presentations
The opioid epidemic in the United States is a persistent public health issue exacerbated by increasingly dangerous and potent synthetic opioids. Although there are growing levels of access to naloxone and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as well as growing numbers of overdose-related deaths, these data indicate that U.S. drug policy continues to be characterized by a primarily reactive and partially punitive framework. This study will compare the U.S. drug policy model to that of Portugal, which fully decriminalized all illicit drugs in 2001, shifting from a national drug policy based on punishment and repression to one focused on preventing the consumption …

Investigating Barriers Toward Implementation Of Harm Reduction, Mati Abrahami, Melissa Lehman, Ali Cunningham Abbott
Student Publications and Presentations
Harm reduction is a public health initiative that focuses on reducing the harms associated with substance use. These initiatives are currently being implemented all throughout Europe and across Canada in order to combat the addiction and overdose crisis. Despite strong empirical evidence of the efficacy of harm reduction in preventing death and overdose, these initiatives face many barriers to implementation in the United States and are not widely accepted or practiced. The aim of this study is to investigate overall feelings, perceptions, and attitudes towards harm reduction with the goal of identifying factors that predict such outcomes. Participants completed a …
Understanding Motivation And Student Engagement In Campus Mental Health Services, Vishwa Shukla
Understanding Motivation And Student Engagement In Campus Mental Health Services, Vishwa Shukla
Student Publications and Presentations
Universities across the United States invest significant resources into student mental health services, yet many Generation Z students do not fully engage with the support available to them. Students consistently report high levels of stress and psychological distress, yet many students do not take the step of using available services. Existing research suggests that motivation may play a critical role in whether students engage at all. Drawing from self-determination theory, this presentation explores how autonomous motivation, the sense that seeking help is a personally meaningful and self-directed choice, may influence whether students choose to seek support in the first place. …

Human heart development depends on tightly coordinated genetic programs and biomechanical cues, yet the underlying cell-microenvironment interactions remain poorly understood because the developing heart is difficult to study in utero and accurate experimental models are lacking. Recent advances in stem cell biology and three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting now allow the construction of human tissue analogues with defined structure and function. Here we show a perfusable 3D bioprinted model of the human embryonic heart tube composed of layered myocardium, cardiac jelly, and endocardium. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells are cultured under controlled flow conditions, producing constructs with high …

Mississippi Coastal Bacterial Community Response To Lowered Salinty, Jackson C. Sues
Mississippi Coastal Bacterial Community Response To Lowered Salinty, Jackson C. Sues
Honors Theses
Microbial communities are essential to the function of coastal ecosystems; however, few studies have examined their response to short-term reductions in salinity. This study used a microcosm approach to examine how decreased salinity over five days affected seawater bacterial community composition, diversity, and richness. Microcosms were assigned to three treatments: unmanipulated seawater (control) collected from the Mississippi coast, seawater amended with natural freshwater, and seawater amended with sterilized freshwater. Length of time bacteria spent in the microcosms was found to have the strongest effect on bacterial community composition, while salinity effects were weaker but still statistically significant. All treatments shifted …

The lung is a uniquely demanding target for regeneration because function depends on the coordinated integration of cellular diversity, three-dimensional architecture, cyclic mechanical forces, vascular perfusion, immune surveillance, and extracellular matrix remodeling. While single-cell and spatial profiling, lineage tracing, and iPSC-derived models have transformed our understanding of lung cell states and developmental potential, these descriptive approaches have also highlighted a central bottleneck: the field still lacks broadly adopted platforms to test whether engineered tissues and regenerative interventions restore function under physiologic load. In this review, we focus on emerging technologies that enable functional biodesign in lung biology by coupling engineered …

Increased oxygen levels at birth regulate myocyte bioenergetic and structural maturation controlled by mitochondrial cyclophilin D (CypD). We evaluated mechanisms of neonatal hypoxic cardiac dysfunction by exposing neonatal mice to 12% oxygen and studied cardiac bioenergetics, myocyte maturation, and function. Hypoxia decreased the activity/assembly of electron transport chain complex I, uncoupled oxidative phosphorylation, increased proliferation, decreased differentiation, increased ventricular mass, and decreased cardiac function. CypD inhibition rescued most hypoxia-mediated effects and increased cardiac function. In conclusion, neonatal hypoxia alters cardiac bioenergetics, myocyte maturation, and cardiac function through CypD-dependent pathways, providing potential therapeutic targets for neonatal cardiac dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the rate of intravenous fluid (IVF) administration in sepsis influences glycocalyx breakdown. This study aimed to measure the effect of rapid versus slow fluid bolus in a septic pig model on the integrity of the glycocalyx by measuring the serum levels of heparan sulfate and syndecan-1, breakdown products of the glycocalyx. Because endothelial glycocalyx is composed of apical cell membrane-bound proteoglycans such as syndecan-1, covalently bound with long linear glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfate, shedding of these different glycocalyx components is closely related. Additionally, we measured central blood volume (blood volume in the heart and …

Price Dispersion In Online Markets Increases During Periods Of Higher Demand As Firms Use Dynamic Pricing Strategies To Maximize Revenue Under Demand Uncertainty., Brooke Stewart
Honors Theses
This study investigates the phenomenon of price dispersion in online retail markets during high-demand periods, focusing on the role of dynamic pricing under conditions of demand uncertainty. Although online markets operate in a transparent way, and consumers find it cheap to search them, the price dispersion phenomenon, when the same product is sold at varying prices by various vendors, persists. The study discusses the case of higher dispersion of prices in high-demand times like holidays, sales events, or shortages of goods when there is uncertainty about the future demand, causing dynamic pricing models. In analyzing the price of 25 the …

“Tolling For The Outcast”: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Consideration Of The Relationship Between The Americans With Disabilities Act, Death Row Conditions, And Capital Punishment, Michael L. Perlin, Esq., Talia Roitberg Harmon, Maren Geiger, Chelsea Henning
San Diego Law Review
The press has regularly reported on the level of abysmal conditions on death rows in those states that have retained capital punishment. Death-row prisoners are often incarcerated in solitary confinement, and are subject to much more deprivation and harsher conditions than other prisoners. As a result, many experience declining mental health, and it has become clear that persons with mental illness are disproportionately put to death. Some litigants have turned to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a potential source of relief; the Supreme Court’s decision in Pennsylvania Department of Corrections v. Yeskey underscored that the act’s language “unmistakably …
