Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Metcalfe County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey Jan 2007

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Metcalfe County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Prototype Mixed-Signal Hardware For Public Safety Radio Interoperability, Timothy Edwood Bond Jan 2007

Prototype Mixed-Signal Hardware For Public Safety Radio Interoperability, Timothy Edwood Bond

Master's Theses and Capstones

In performing their required duties public safety personnel from differing departments often need to communicate with one another using their in-car radios. However, in many cases, especially involving small departments, this interoperability doesn't exist.

A prototype circuit design has been developed and tested within the laboratory using two common radio systems: EFJohnson and Motorola. The preliminary results have shown successful operation as a system gateway between the two radio systems with good performance regarding audio signal latency and minimizing the push-to-talk signal generation delay.

An Analysis Of Accelerated Atherosclerosis In The Hyperglycemic Hyperlipidemic Syrian F(1)B Hamster, Adele Jeanne Marone Jan 2007

An Analysis Of Accelerated Atherosclerosis In The Hyperglycemic Hyperlipidemic Syrian F(1)B Hamster, Adele Jeanne Marone

Master's Theses and Capstones

Humans with diabetes mellitus are two to five times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and do so at a much younger age than non-diabetics. This study utilized the Syrian F1B hamster, a model of human atherosclerosis, to: (1) determine whether one intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) could induce a diabetic-like hyperglycemic state, (2) compare the development of atherosclerotic lesions between non-treated (N), hyperglycemic (G), hyperlipidemic (L) and combined hyperlipidemic/hyperglycemic (L+G) hamsters, and (3) determine whether lesion development was accelerated due to plasma levels of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, non-HDL-C, HDL-C, or lipid hydroperoxides, or by the TC/HDL-C or TG/HDL-C …

Reproductive Ecology Variation And Molecular Phylogeography In The Garter Snakes Of Northern New England: (Thamnophis Sirtalis Sirtalis L 1758 And Thamnophis Sirtalis Pallidulus Allen 1899), William Stephen Kean Jan 2007

Reproductive Ecology Variation And Molecular Phylogeography In The Garter Snakes Of Northern New England: (Thamnophis Sirtalis Sirtalis L 1758 And Thamnophis Sirtalis Pallidulus Allen 1899), William Stephen Kean

Master's Theses and Capstones

Thamnophis sirtalis, the Common garter snake, is a wide-ranging North American snake exhibiting great variation in morphology and life-history attributes across its range. This thesis studied reproductive variation and molecular phylogeography of T. s. sirtalis, the Eastern garter snake, and T. s. pallidulus, the Maritime garter snake, in populations from New England in 2005 and 2006. Pregnant female snakes were captured and held in captivity until parturition, and measurements were taken on parent and offspring for comparisons across years and locations. Tissue samples were taken from adult snakes for mtDNA sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic comparisons. No substantial trends were observed …

The Impact Of The User Board Majority Requirement On The Governance Of Community Health Centers, Nancy J. Bracken Jan 2007

The Impact Of The User Board Majority Requirement On The Governance Of Community Health Centers, Nancy J. Bracken

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The federal requirement that 51 percent of the governing boards of federally funded community health centers must be users of the health center was originally intended to insure that the community served had a voice in the services provided. This qualitative study attempted to determine the perceptions of key stakeholders of the impact of the requirement on the effectiveness of governing boards, as well as how boards develop and measure effectiveness. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews with five CEOs and five Board Chairs revealed few concerns about the challenges of complying with the requirement. Board training in South Carolina appears to be …

A Hybrid Simulation Model For Studying Acute Inflammatory Response, Wayne W. Wakeland, Louis Macovsky, Gary An Jan 2007

A Hybrid Simulation Model For Studying Acute Inflammatory Response, Wayne W. Wakeland, Louis Macovsky, Gary An

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The modeling of complex biological systems presents a significant challenge. Central to this challenge is striking a balance between the degree of abstraction required to facilitate analysis and understanding, and the degree of comprehensiveness required for fidelity of the model to its reference-system. It is likely necessary to utilize multiple modeling methods in order to achieve this balance. Our research created a hybrid simulation model by melding an agent-based model of acute local infection with a system dynamics model that reflects key systemic properties. The agent based model was originally developed to simulate global inflammation in response to injury or …

Health Care And The Looming Fiscal Crisis In The United States, Michael J. Wasylenko

Economics - All Scholarship

The United States spends a sixth of its GDP on health care. The costs of Medicare and Medicaid have grown along with the cost of health care in general in the United States. The paper addresses the large budget gap that will emerge in Medicare and Medicaid in the decades to come. It describes program financing and some of their main features and explains the projections of the U.S. Congressional Budget Office as well as those of the U.S. appointed Board of Trustees of Social Security, Federal Hospital Insurance and Federal Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Funds. Finally, the article discusses …

Romantic Couples And Partner Use Of Sexually Explicit Material: The Mediating Role Of Cognitions For Dyadic And Sexual Satisfaction, Ana J. Bridges Jan 2007

Romantic Couples And Partner Use Of Sexually Explicit Material: The Mediating Role Of Cognitions For Dyadic And Sexual Satisfaction, Ana J. Bridges

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examined the relationship between use of sexually explicit material (SEM) and sexual and relationship satisfaction. Three hypotheses were examined: (1) negative interpretations of a partner's SEM use would be related to lower dyadic satisfaction; (2) interactive SEM use would result in more negative partner interpretations of that use; and (3) distressed couples would be less reliable reporters of each other's SEM use. The study also explored how feminist values, depression, and sexual functioning correlated with interpretations of a partner's SEM use. Participants were 217 couples in exclusive heterosexual relationships solicited through Internet sites devoted to psychological studies. Couples …
