Quantitative Differences In The Conversational Performance Of People With Severe Expressive Aphasia Using Three Types Of Visual Screen Displays On Speech Generating Devices, Jennifer Seale Jan 2007

Quantitative Differences In The Conversational Performance Of People With Severe Expressive Aphasia Using Three Types Of Visual Screen Displays On Speech Generating Devices, Jennifer Seale

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This multiple single-subject research study measured quantitative differences in communication success, communicator roles and act functions during dyadic conversational interactions between six people with severe aphasia and their peer communication partners across three conditions involving a type of augmentative communication intervention, speech generating devices (SGDs). Researchers assessed these variables across four conditions involving the message display of the SGD: no display (Condition A), visual scenes (contextual photographic) display (Condition B), Traditional Grid Display (Condition C), while participants engage in conversational story telling. This study is important because technology is currently being developed to assist people with aphasia to access messages …

Meeting The Absurd: Camus And The Communication Ethics Of The Everyday, Brent Sleasman Jan 2007

Meeting The Absurd: Camus And The Communication Ethics Of The Everyday, Brent Sleasman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The metaphor of the absurd, as well as the work and thought of Albert Camus, has primarily served as a secondary resource within the communication discipline. This project contributes to the conversation about the absurd in an effort to further the study of communication ethics by placing Camus in the foreground. The metaphor of the absurd provides an opportunity to examine philosophical hermeneutics in relation to Camus's insights. The work of Paul Ricoeur and Hans-Georg Gadamer, emphasizing the role of metaphor and how it connects the absurd as used by Camus to our current postmodern moment, provides the methodological framework …

Structural Indicators Of Index Crime Rates In Metropolitan Counties For 1990 And 2000, Jacob Becker Jan 2007

Structural Indicators Of Index Crime Rates In Metropolitan Counties For 1990 And 2000, Jacob Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between structural features common to research within social disorganization and strain theory frameworks of metropolitan counties in 1990 and 2000 and their crime rates. It hypothesizes that economic inequality, a measure of relative deprivation, will be a more consistent structural indicator of crime than poverty, a measure of absolute deprivation. Twelve independent structural variables based on 1990 and 2000 Census data are placed in ordinary least-squares regression models to predict crime rates for 10 different Uniform Crime Report types. Results support this hypothesis, as well as identify a number of other structural indicators that are …

Examining The Ways And Extent To Which Counselors In Botswana Are Utilizing Indigenous Cultural Practices And Structures, Dan-Bush Bhusumane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this qualitative study was to identify and examine the ways in which and the extent to which counselors in Botswana incorporate and utilize indigenous cultural practices and structures in counseling. This applied research involved interviewing 30 counselors from different parts of Botswana. Data collection was through a semi-structured interview guide while audiotaping was the main method of recording the interviews. The study showed that while counselors in Botswana appreciate the need to utilize indigenous cultural practices and structures, they rarely incorporate cultural practices into counseling. In addition, the study revealed that most counselors have limited knowledge …

A Narrative Of Charitable Acknowledgment: Reframing Interpersonal Communication In Intimate Relationships, Cory Williams Jan 2007

A Narrative Of Charitable Acknowledgment: Reframing Interpersonal Communication In Intimate Relationships, Cory Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of interpersonal communication conducts many descriptive studies. However, guidance for healthy communication within intimate relationships is more difficult to come by--a condition stemming in part from an emotivist ethical paradigm. MacIntyre (1984) describes "emotivism" as the current state of society where individual preference serves as the ethical decision making compass. Emerging from Enlightenment scholarship (e.g., Hobbes, Rousseau, sociobiology), individual preferences have become main tenets in intimate interpersonal research. In the interpersonal theories of social exchange and goal-orientation, emotivism is encouraged in the emphasis placed on self-interest and technique. This exposes itself metaphorically through descriptions of communication as a …

Pressuring Sudan: The Prospect Of An Oil-For-Food Program For Darfur, Russell P. Mcaleavey Jan 2007

Pressuring Sudan: The Prospect Of An Oil-For-Food Program For Darfur, Russell P. Mcaleavey

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note examines whether Justice Goldstone's proposal for an oil-for-food program is feasible in today's international political climate and whether it would be effective in curtailing the violence and aiding civilians in Darfur. Part I begins by examining the reasons behind China's reluctance to support international initiatives to achieve peace in Darfur. Part II discusses the U.N. Oil-for-Food Program in Iraq and outlines proposals for avoiding problems that plagued that program. Finally, Part III takes into consideration the political and logistical difficulties that are likely to arise from the institution of an oil-for-food program in Sudan, and concludes that such …

Thawing A Frozen Treaty: Protecting United States Interests In The Arctic With A Congressional-Executive Agreement On The Law Of The Sea, Andrew King Jan 2007

Thawing A Frozen Treaty: Protecting United States Interests In The Arctic With A Congressional-Executive Agreement On The Law Of The Sea, Andrew King

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The steadily shrinking Arctic ice cap has triggered a feverish interest among the five nations whose coastlines border the region concerning their respective rights to the ocean and the seabed below. The possibility of huge reserves of natural gas and oil, and the potential for newly navigable channels have led to competing claims by the United States, Canada, Russia, Denmark, and Norway over large sections of the Arctic. The United States, however, is in danger of losing out due to the obstructionist efforts of a handful of isolationist Senators who consigned a crucial treaty providing a mechanism to negotiate these …

Committing A Crime While A Refugee: Rethinking The Issue Of Deportation In Light Of The Principle Against Double Jeopardy, Won Kidane Jan 2007

Committing A Crime While A Refugee: Rethinking The Issue Of Deportation In Light Of The Principle Against Double Jeopardy, Won Kidane

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The Double Jeopardy Clause of the United States Constitution provides: "No person shall ... be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb ... " If a refugee who has committed a deportable offense and served his sentence is subsequently deported from a place where he calls home to a place where he would face persecution, he could literally be said to have been twice put in jeopardy of life and limb. That seems to be a prima facie violation of the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment. This constitutional guarantee is, …

An Outpatient Physical Therapy Non-Operative Management And Intervention For An Older, Athletic, Professional, Caucasian Male Patient With An Acute Gastrocnemius Medialis And Lateralis Muscle Rupture, Thea Loy Pallansch Jan 2007

An Outpatient Physical Therapy Non-Operative Management And Intervention For An Older, Athletic, Professional, Caucasian Male Patient With An Acute Gastrocnemius Medialis And Lateralis Muscle Rupture, Thea Loy Pallansch

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Description: The gastrocnemius muscle is a two joint muscle originating on the femur and inserting into the calcaneus through the Achilles tendon. The gastrocnemius spans the knee and ankle joint providing important stabilization and movement functions in walking, running, and jumping activities. Rupture of the Achilles tendon is one of the most common tendinous injuries. Non-operative, conservative treatment of the acute Achilles tendon rupture demonstrates comparable results to surgical intervention. Non-operative management promotes patient tolerance, low cost, and positive clinical outcomes. Previous studies have supported the concept of functional bracing as a conservative, alternate treatment for an acutely ruptured Achilles …

Cocaine During Adolescence Enhances Dopamine In Response To A Natural Reinforcer, Briony J. Catlow, Cheryl L. Kirstein Jan 2007

Cocaine During Adolescence Enhances Dopamine In Response To A Natural Reinforcer, Briony J. Catlow, Cheryl L. Kirstein

Psychology Faculty Publications

The use of cocaine during adolescent development could alter the normal growth of brain regions affected by cocaine, specifically the reward system, and impact the adult mesolimbic system. However, there is scant literature aimed at determining whether animals are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of drugs during adolescence. The present study investigated whether cocaine pretreatment in either adolescence or adulthood altered the dopaminergic response to a naturally reinforcing substance in adulthood. To evaluate the responsivity of the mesolimbic system after repeated cocaine, sucrose was offered during the dialysis procedure and dialysates were collected. Regardless of age all saline pretreated …

Out-Group Exploitation Through Depersonalization In A Prisoner's Dilemma Game, Risa Ohkawa Jan 2007

Out-Group Exploitation Through Depersonalization In A Prisoner's Dilemma Game, Risa Ohkawa

Modern Psychological Studies

The experiment examined how salience of out-group membership affects an individual's tendency to financially exploit an out-group member in a prisoner's dilemma (PD) game and a monetary bonus allocation task. It also examined the role of depersonalization of self and others. Half of the research participants played a PD game to win money with an imaginary opponent, who had a foreign accent, and the other half did with an opponent, who spoke fluent English. A salient indication of out-group membership was present in the former (accent) condition, and it was absent in the latter (control). Participants were also asked to …

The Effects Of Experienced Childhood Maternal Abuse On Adult Attachment Styles, Joseph Oliva, Richard Velayo, Katherine Erwin Jan 2007

The Effects Of Experienced Childhood Maternal Abuse On Adult Attachment Styles, Joseph Oliva, Richard Velayo, Katherine Erwin

Modern Psychological Studies

The relationship between experienced maternal abuse and the development of an insecure attachment style was examined. Data was collected via selfreport questionnaires in a large, urban college campus. The questionnaires used were the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS-2, Straus, Hamby, Boney-McCoy, & Sugarman, 1996) and Attachment Questionnaire (AQ, Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991). The sample included 81 females and 86 males, ranging in age from 18-57 years old. No significant correlation was found between the experience of maternal abuse and the development of a fearful attachment style. The results did support a significant correlation between maternal abuse and the development of …

Acculturative Strategies And The Outcomes Of Self-Esteem And Well-Being Of Latino Immigrants To Boston, Jane Mellors Jan 2007

Acculturative Strategies And The Outcomes Of Self-Esteem And Well-Being Of Latino Immigrants To Boston, Jane Mellors

Modern Psychological Studies

Acculturation is the negotiation process that immigrants undergo as they struggle to adapt to their new culture. Four acculturative strategies are thought to exist that immigrants can choose, and, although the selection of an acculturative strategy is influenced by the sociocultural context, the adoptions of different strategies have been associated with specific psychological outcomes (Berry, 1997, 2005; Neto, 2002; Sam, 2000). Past acculturative research has largely focused on areas outside of the United States; the current project is designed to fill a gap in the psychological literature by exploring Boston, Massachusetts, a city which has experienced a tremendous increase of …

Outsourcing Drug Investigations To India: A Comment On U.S., Indian, And International Regulation Of Clinical Trials In Cross-Border Pharmaceutical Research, James Cekola Jan 2007

Outsourcing Drug Investigations To India: A Comment On U.S., Indian, And International Regulation Of Clinical Trials In Cross-Border Pharmaceutical Research, James Cekola

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The traditional research and development model of large pharmaceutical companies is arguably unsustainable in current times. For example, estimated research and development costs increased as much as twelve percent over the last year while pharmaceutical sales grew only seven percent over the same period. Current estimates put the price to develop a new drug and bring it to market between $800 million and $1.5 billion per drug. These costs are increasing, driving large pharmaceutical companies to find more cost-effective research and development models. One cost-saving initiative is to globalize the system. In particular, companies have increasingly outsourced the required investigational …

Biology Faculty Work

Concern is mounting regarding the human health and environmental effects of bisphenol A (BPA), a high-production-volume chemical used in synthesis of plastics. We have reviewed the growing literature on effects of low doses of BPA, below 50 mg/kg/day, in laboratory exposures with mammalian model organisms. Many, but not all, effects of BPA are similar to effects seen in response to the model estrogens diethylstilbestrol and ethinylestradiol. For most effects, the potency of BPA is approximately 10 to 1,000-fold less than that of diethylstilbestrol or ethinylestradiol. Based on our review of the literature, a consensus was reached regarding our level of …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Hart County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Joshua J. Johnson

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Groundwater Quality In Watersheds Of The Kentucky River, Salt River, Licking River, Big Sandy River, Little Sandy River, And Tygarts Creek (Kentucky Basin Management Units 1, 2, And 5), R. Stephen Fisher, Bart Davidson, Peter T. Goodmann

Report of Investigations--KGS

The Kentucky Geological Survey, University of Kentucky, and the Kentucky Division of Water (of the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet) are evaluating groundwater quality throughout the commonwealth to determine regional conditions, assess impacts of nonpoint-source pollutants, establish a basis for detecting changes, and provide essential information for environmental-protection and resource-management decisions.

These evaluations are being conducted in stages. Under the Kentucky Watershed management Framework, Kentucky’s 12 major river basins and tributaries of the Ohio River were grouped into five basin management units (BMU’s). A previous report summarized and evaluated groundwater quality in BMU 3 (watersheds of the Upper Cumberland …
