The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C. Jan 2007

The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C.

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article examines the subsistence practices among the Muduga and Kurumba of Attappady in Kerala paying close attention to the socio-ecological basis of their economic activities. This facilitates an understanding of the close relationship between the distribution of natural and cultural communities, and the way in which the society is organized to reach a successful accommodation of a specific set of environmental needs. The data presented relate to wild and domesticated food products and the kin and social systems employed for obtaining them. I conclude that, although hunting and gathering alone could provide a subsistence, in a modern situation, dependence …

Phylogeography Of Cave Crickets (Ceuthophilus Spp.) In Central Texas: A Keystone Taxon For The Conservation And Management Of Federally Listed Endangered Cave Arthropods, Kevin P. Johnson, Jean K. Krejca, John D. Murdoch Jan 2007

Murdoch

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Ceuthophilus spp. (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) in two subgenera (Ceuthophilus and Geotettix) were examined phylogenetically, morphologically, and biogeographically in order to improve our understanding of these species that carry nutrients into caves and are thus closely tied to rare and endangered troglobites in central Texas. Crickets were collected from 43 caves across central Texas, and outgroup taxa were collected in west Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, and Mexico. We analyzed 1263 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA from the COI and ND5 genes and complemented this data with morphometric analyses of 19 morphological characters. Phylogenetic trees from the molecular analysis allowed us to …

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, E. Spencer Fleury Jan 2007

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, E. Spencer Fleury

KIP Theses and Dissertations

Karst topography is the result of a specific combination of geological conditions, precipitation, biota, and temperature, and is characterized by the gradual solution of the underlying bedrock and the development of underground drainage routes for surficial runoff. Many of these karst landscapes are found in urbanized areas, where the potential for anthropogenic impact is quite high. In many instances, municipalities on karst terrains choose to mitigate these impacts by implementing ordinances that place restrictions on permissible land uses near karst landforms. This dissertation asks the quest: are the impacts of karst-related land use regulation on human/social systems significant enough to …

Lincoln And Chief Justice Taney: Slavery, Secession, And The President's War Powers, James F. Simon Jan 2007

Lincoln And Chief Justice Taney: Slavery, Secession, And The President's War Powers, James F. Simon

Books

The clashes between President Abraham Lincoln and Chief Justice Roger B. Taney over slavery, secession, and the president's constitutional war powers went to the heart of Lincoln's presidency. James Simon, author of the acclaimed What Kind of Nation, brings to vivid life the passionate struggle during the worst crisis in the nation's history, the Civil War. The issues that underlaid that crisis -- race, states' rights, and the president's wartime authority -- resonate today in the nation's political debate.

Protected From Politics: Diminishing Margins Of Electoral Competition In U.S. Congressional Elections, Samuel Issacharoff, Jonathan Nagler

Faculty Articles

Our aim in this Article is to urge a bit of caution before concluding that the system worked just as it should have and that our elections continue to properly ensure accountability of the elected to the electors. Even uncompetitive districts are at some level subject to shifts in voter preference. A district that is designed to be a safe district for an incumbent with 80% of the population of the incumbent's party could be won by the opposing party were that party to receive 100% of the votes. Indeed, so long as there are elections, the voters can always …

Faunal Analysis Of The Tongue River Bison Kill Site (24rb2135) In Southeastern Montana, Hilleary Allison Sutton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The University of Montana excavated the Tongue River bison kill site (24RB2135) in 2005 on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. This was the site of a prehistoric bison hunt. Over 20,000 bone fragments and over 1,000 stone tools were recovered during the excavation. This study focuses on the bone material in order to understand past hunting practices at this site. In order to complete the analyses required to understand the faunal material, specific data was gathered for each bone element. These data points include: the taxon, skeletal element, side, body orientation, portion, color, size, weathering, age, and any natural or cultural …

Investigation Of A Triangle Zone Structure Between Augusta And Bowman’S Corners, Lewis And Clark County, Montana, Heather Marie Henry

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Henry, Heather, M.S., May 2007 Geosciences Investigation of a triangle zone structure between Augusta and Bowman’s Corners, Lewis and Clark County, Montana Chairperson: James Sears Productive hydrocarbon reservoirs along Canada’s Rocky Mountain thrust belt are contained by a triangle zone, which is comprised of complex antiformal wedge structures that commonly form along the leading edges of foreland fold-thrust systems world-wide. Duplex imbrication within triangle zones create stacked structural traps for hydrocarbons driven toward the surface by the propagation of thrust belts. This geometry is well documented in a series of en echelon structures that stretch approximately 900 kilometers, from northeast …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Place-Based Conservation Education Program By Applying Utilization-Focused Evaluation, Alice B. Flowers Jan 2007

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Place-Based Conservation Education Program By Applying Utilization-Focused Evaluation, Alice B. Flowers

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Lack of personal connection to the natural world by most American youth builds reason for assessing effectiveness of conservation education programs. Place-based learning is important in helping youth understand how their personal and societal well-being are linked and dependent upon their local habitats. Across Montana 2277 students in grades 3 - 10 participate in an interactive year long fishing education program with their teachers called Hooked on Fishing (HOF).

The purpose of my study was to assess the effectiveness of HOF, a place-based conservation education program established in 1996, and modeled after the national Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs …

On The Trail Of The Twentieth-Century Mormon Outmigration, G. Wesley Johnson, Marian Ashby Johnson

BYU Studies

This article gives an overview of a major history research project that is now coming to a close after twenty years of activity. It is the Mormon Outmigration Leadership History Project, sponsored by the Marriott School of Management. Its focus has been to study the great urban outmigration of the twentieth century, as members of the Latter-day Saint community moved from traditional Mormon lands to all four corners of the United States in search of employment and education. The project has compiled in-depth case studies of individuals and families who migrated to twenty “target cities” across the nation (table 1). …

North American Species Of Astragalus Linnaeus (Leguminosae): A Taxonomic Revision, Stanley L. Welsh Jan 2007

North American Species Of Astragalus Linnaeus (Leguminosae): A Taxonomic Revision, Stanley L. Welsh

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This summary revision of the species of Astragalus in North America, north of Mexico, was initially prepared for inclusion in the Flora North America Project. That publication has been postponed indefinitely, and this paper is being presented now to allow those students of the genus with an updated manuscript to review, and to use prior to appearance of the Flora North America treatment. It differs from the Flora North America format in having bibliographic citations to the synonyms, and the type specimens are cited. The present work treats 354 species; 198 varieties; 552 total taxa. Should the 4 7 …

New York State Road Networks And The Transformation Of American Federalism, Michael R. Fein Ph.D. Jan 2007

New York State Road Networks And The Transformation Of American Federalism, Michael R. Fein Ph.D.

Humanities Department Faculty Publications & Research

Scholars have long recognized the central role American road building has played in the development of modern European highway networks. While the German autobahn and the Italian autostrade were pivotal in twentieth-century construction, Americans’ pioneering work in urban parkways and interstate highways also offered an appealing model. From the perspective of European transportation planners, Americans embraced road building with exceptional gusto. Little seemed to stand in the way of their engineers, whose actions – at least until the 1960s – appeared to perfectly mirror public desire.
