Tributary Glacier Surges: An Exceptional Concentration At Panmah Glacier, Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt Mar 2007

Tributary Glacier Surges: An Exceptional Concentration At Panmah Glacier, Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Four tributaries of Panmah Glacier have surged in less than a decade, three in quick succession between 2001 and 2005. Since 1985, 13 surges have been recorded in the Karakoram Himalaya, more than in any comparable period since the 1850s. Ten were tributary surges. In these ten a full run-out of surge ice is prevented, but extended post-surge episodes affect the tributary and main glacier. The sudden concentration of events at Panmah Glacier is without precedent and at odds with known surge intervals for the glaciers. Interpretations must consider the response of thermally complex glaciers, at exceptionally high altitudes and …

Woven Worlds, Konai Helu Thaman Mar 2007

Woven Worlds, Konai Helu Thaman

Pacific Studies

This poem beautifully portrays the act of weaving—both literal and metaphorical—as a shared practice of memory, creativity, and cultural continuity. The speaker reflects on how hands, once weaving traditional materials like voivoi (pandanus), now craft art through movement and color. Together, the weavers form a collective bond, connecting generations and geographies in a creative act that honors ancestral legacy and reimagines the world through shared expression.

Entrepreneurial Social Sector Organizations: Factors That Facilitate Growth And Performance, David A. Sherman Mar 2007

Entrepreneurial Social Sector Organizations: Factors That Facilitate Growth And Performance, David A. Sherman

Student Scholarship

Survey data from 228 entrepreneurial social sector organizations was used to examine the factors that facilitate growth and organizational performance in the social sector. The study was designed to address the following core question: How are some entrepreneurial social sector organizations better able to grow and perform than others despite environmental challenges such as resource scarcity? Hypotheses were developed using resource-based theory, resource dependence theory, network theories, and goal theory. Structural equation modeling was used to test these hypotheses. The study adds to our understanding of the organization-level drivers of growth and organizational performance in the social sector. It introduces …

A Future-Based Risk Assessment For The Survivability Of Long Range Strike Systems, William D. Heuck Jr. Mar 2007

A Future-Based Risk Assessment For The Survivability Of Long Range Strike Systems, William D. Heuck Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force today faces the challenge of allocating development resources to prepare for future force projection requirements. In particular, the Air Force's core competency of Global Attack implies a future capability that can quickly and successfully deliver combat effects anywhere in the world with impunity. Understanding that the future threat environment is dynamic and that continued advancements by adversaries will likely degrade the technical superiority of today's weapon systems, the need arises for a planning model to direct development funding to areas with the greatest probability of successfully defending the strike vehicle of 2035. Examining this problem …

Computer Use Differences As A Function Of High Or Low Minority Enrollment: A National Comparison, Manny Juarez, John R. Slate Mar 2007

Computer Use Differences As A Function Of High Or Low Minority Enrollment: A National Comparison, Manny Juarez, John R. Slate

Essays in Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of technology usage in public schools having high minority student enrollment and in public schools having low minority student enrollment. Specifically, our interest was in determining the extent to which technology usage differed by region of the country for minority enrollment. Three statistical differences were reported for percent minority and region in computer use to read, write, and spell, to learn math, and for science concepts. Computer use to read, write, and spell had the highest frequency among schools having 50% or more minority student enrollment, but less than 75% …

Improved Hyperspectral Image Testing Using Synthetic Imagery And Factorial Designed Experiments, Joseph P. Bellucci Mar 2007

Improved Hyperspectral Image Testing Using Synthetic Imagery And Factorial Designed Experiments, Joseph P. Bellucci

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of any remote sensing system is to gather data about the geography it is imaging. In order to gain knowledge of the earth's landscape, post-processing algorithms are developed to extract information from the collected data. The algorithms can be intended to classify the various ground covers in a scene, identify specific targets of interest, or detect anomalies in an image. After the design of an algorithm comes the difficult task of testing and evaluating its performance. Traditionally, algorithms are tested using sets of extensively ground truthed test images. However, the lack of well characterized test data sets and …

Judging The Voting Rights Act, Thomas J. Miles, Adam B. Cox Mar 2007

Judging The Voting Rights Act, Thomas J. Miles, Adam B. Cox

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The Voting Rights Act has radically altered the political status of minority voters and dramatically transformed the partisan structure of American politics. Given the political and racial salience of cases brought under the Act, it is surprising that the growing literature on the effects of a judge's ideology and race on judicial decisionmaking has overlooked these cases. This Article provides the first systematic evidence that judicial ideology and race are closely related to findings of liability in voting rights cases. Democratic appointees are significantly more likely than Republican appointees to vote for liability under Section 2 of the Voting Rights …

Interspecific And Intraspecific Differences In Foraging Preferences Of Container-Dwelling Mosquitoes, Kesavaraju Banugopan, Donald A. Yee, Steven A. Juliano Mar 2007

Interspecific And Intraspecific Differences In Foraging Preferences Of Container-Dwelling Mosquitoes, Kesavaraju Banugopan, Donald A. Yee, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Feeding preferences of larval container-dwelling mosquitoes are not well understood. Primary production is often absent in container systems and external inputs of animal and plant detritus supply the energy base of container food webs by supporting microorganism prey for mosquitoes. We quantified the feeding preferences of Aedes albopictus (Skuse), a non-native invasive mosquito, and Ochlerotahts triseriatus (Say), a native mosquito, when given a choice of animal and plant detritus. We tested for interpopulational (Illinois versus Florida) differences in feeding preferences, and quantified each species' performance on these two detritus types. When given a choice, both species spent significantly more time …

Lacustrine Evidence For Moisture Changes In The Nebraska Sand Hills During Marine Isotope Stage 3, Kimberly C. Jacobs, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James B. Swinehart

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the central Great Plains of North America, loess stratigraphy suggests that climate during the late Pleistocene was cold and dry. However, this record is discontinuous, and there are few other records of late-Pleistocene conditions. Cobb Basin, located on the northern edge of the Nebraska Sand Hills, contains lacustrine sediments deposited during Marine Isotope Stage 3, beginning approximately 45,000 cal yr BP and continuing for at least 10,000 yr. The lake was formed by a dune dam blockage on the ancient Niobrara River, and its deposits contain a diatom record that indicates changes through time in lake depth driven by …

Preliminary Results Of A Fecal Microbe Survey In An Eutrophic Lake, Wilgreen Lake, Madison County, Kentucky, Walter S. Borowski, Michael S. Albright

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Wilgreen Lake is a small (~14 mi2) eutrophic lake formed by damming several tributary streams to Silver Creek, Madison County, Kentucky. The lake receives runoff from industrial and urban areas (Richmond) that comprise ~10% of the total watershed area; most runoff is from cattle pasture or human developments encircling the lake. Present and past developments are on septic systems, and effluent from these systems is known qualitatively to seep into lake waters.

Our research group is currently conducting a study of the lake in order to identify major nutrient sources, and one possible tracer method is to quantitatively …

Reading South African Media Representations Of Islam After 11 September 2001, Gabeba Baderoon Mar 2007

Reading South African Media Representations Of Islam After 11 September 2001, Gabeba Baderoon

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Reading South African Media Representations of Islam after 11 September 2001," Gabeba Baderoon probes the resonances of news representations of 11 September 2001. Baderoon examines the events of that day from the perspective of South Africa, arguing that the international media became located and embodied through the representations of the highly visible and grievable deaths of just under three thousand people in the United States. Her analysis reveals a complex view that derives from the legacy of legislated racial discrimination crafted under the policy of Apartheid as well as the presence of Muslims brought as slaves during …

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess validity of sensory integration outcomes research in relation to fidelity (faithfulness of intervention to underlying therapeutic principles).

METHOD: We identified core sensory integration intervention elements through expert review and nominal group process. Elements were classified into structural (e.g., equipment used, therapist training) and therapeutic process categories. We analyzed 34 sensory integration intervention studies for consistency of intervention descriptions with these elements.

RESULTS: Most studies described structural elements related to therapeutic equipment and interveners' profession. Of the 10 process elements, only 1 (presentation of sensory opportunities) was addressed in all studies. Most studies described fewer than …

Integrating Patient Safety Into Curriculum: The Purdue University Doctor Of Nursing Practice, Kathryn Rapala, Julie Cowan Novak

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century (2001) and To Err Is Human (2000) were tipping points in patient safety. The public reaction to these reports was significant. People paid attention. The report energized patient safety research and applications, prompting much needed research and evidence-based practice. It is difficult to find a patient safety article that does not reference at least one of these landmark reports.

These early IOM reports were a catalyst for the development of the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Purdue University. Subsequent healthcare summits …

Hidden Doublings: A Context For Understanding Jean D'Arras's Mélusine Ou La Noble Histoire De Lusignan, Kathryn Rimmasch Feb 2007

Hidden Doublings: A Context For Understanding Jean D'Arras's Mélusine Ou La Noble Histoire De Lusignan, Kathryn Rimmasch

Theses and Dissertations

At the end of the fourteenth century Jean d’Arras rewrote a popular folktale. The tale told how Mélusine, a fairy who was serpent from the navel down every Saturday, married a knight and founded the fortress of Lusignan. In his introduction to the tale Jean d’Arras presents the ideas of four authority figures to convince the reader that fantastical things are possible and that his work should be taken seriously. These authority figures are David, Aristotle, Paul and Gervaise de Tilbury. It is the contention of this thesis that Jean d’Arras presents these figures in his introduction to provide context …
