Science To Service Academic Program Of Distinction: Proposal, Rosalie A. Richards, Ruth Eilers, Karynne L.M. Kleine, Bill Wall, Ken Mcgill, Robert Chandler

Science Education Center

A low level of scientific knowledge among the U.S. population has considerably hindered its economic preeminence and social development. Science to Serve is a distinctive framework at GCSU that embraces a significant number of formal and informal interdisciplinary practices with the single purpose of advancing the interest, engagement, and understanding of science and technology by people of all ages and backgrounds. That is, Science to Serve aims to make science “real” to those who might not ordinarily be engaged so that they see the role of science to life, in education, and to the economy. Primary support for this …

Agricultural Knowledge Transfer In India: A Study Of Prevailing Communication Channels, I. V. Malhan, Shivarama Rao

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract: The nature of agricultural research institutions and activities considerably influence the agriculture information sector in India. This paper describes the development of the agricultural sector in India and provides a comprehensive review of channels of agricultural knowledge transfer in India, including community projects, extension services, government initiatives, agriclinics, networks, and the role of non-governmental organizations and libraries. The paper concludes with the need for integration and consolidation of existing efforts for knowledge transfer from lab to land, and highlights the requirement of setting up a universal agricultural digital library, including content on all areas of agriculture.

The Changing Faces Of New England: Increasing Spatial And Racial Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

New England is growing more slowly than the rest of the nation. The region is becoming more racially diverse, and demographic trends contrast sharply between northern and southern New England and metropolitan and rural areas. New England's population stood at 14,270,000 in July 2006, marking a gain of just 2.5 percent since 2000, less than half the rate.

Effects Of Individual And Contextual Characteristics On Preadjudication Detention Of Juvenile Delinquents, Gaylene Armstrong, Nancy Rodriguez Feb 2007

Effects Of Individual And Contextual Characteristics On Preadjudication Detention Of Juvenile Delinquents, Gaylene Armstrong, Nancy Rodriguez

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study examined individual and contextual factors affecting preadjudication detention of juvenile delinquents in 65 counties of a northeastern state. Results demonstrated that while individual characteristics of the juvenile delinquents were important predictors, much of the variation in decisions was explained when contextual factors of the counties were included in a two‐level hierarchical linear model. In addition to the statistically significant legal and extralegal juvenile characteristics, our study found that counties with a higher percentage of non‐White population were more likely to detain juvenile delinquents prior to adjudication. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering both individual and contextual factors …

The Effects Of Domestic Legal Institutions On International Trade Flows, Yu Wang Feb 2007

The Effects Of Domestic Legal Institutions On International Trade Flows, Yu Wang

ExpressO

The effects of institutions on international trade relations are of theoretical and practical interest. By following the research perspective that interprets institutions as the “rules of the game”, I suggest and study three domestic legal institutions---tenure system for judges, precedent law, and judicial review that supposedly have significant effects on international trade flows. My empirical tests show that both precedent law and judicial review have independent effects on bilateral trade volume while the proposed independent effect of tenured judge is unsupported. Moreover, my empirical evidences suggest that precedent law introduces its effect in a monadic fashion while judicial review (measured …

Building Social Capital With Bonds And Bridges, Nancy Cantor Feb 2007

Building Social Capital With Bonds And Bridges, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

I want to speak today about social capital—the bonds of trust that we form between neighbors, colleagues, acquaintances, new and old—and how essential it is to the health and prosperity of any community. More specifically, I want to talk about our communal responsibility not only to build social capital with those easily within our familiar frame of social reference, but also to bridge to others, less obviously or directly a part of our “social family.” And, I want to take note of how hard this is to do, and analyze some of the commonplace obstacles, with the hope that reflection …

Optimal Scheduling Models For Ferry Companies Under Alliances, Shangyao Yan, Chia-Hung Chen, Hsin-Yen Chen, Tze-Chiang Lou Feb 2007

Optimal Scheduling Models For Ferry Companies Under Alliances, Shangyao Yan, Chia-Hung Chen, Hsin-Yen Chen, Tze-Chiang Lou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Ferry companies in Taiwan increasingly ally themselves with other ferry companies as a means of forming more complete networks, to operate more efficiently. The more complex ferry fleet routing and scheduling processes are not only important in each company’s operations, but also have a bearing on the alliance. In this research, we employ network flow techniques to construct several coordinated scheduling models to help solve for the most satisfactory schedules for the allied ferry companies. Finally, we perform a case study based on real operating data from two Taiwan ferry companies to evaluate the models. The preliminary results show that …
