Speaking Reflections: Whaikoorero (Speech Making) And Karanga (Welcoming Cry) In Recent Theatre By Maaori Women, Mei-Lin Te-Puea Hansen Mar 2007

Speaking Reflections: Whaikoorero (Speech Making) And Karanga (Welcoming Cry) In Recent Theatre By Maaori Women, Mei-Lin Te-Puea Hansen

Pacific Studies

This essay suggests that contemporary Maaori/bicultural theatre is becoming a potent site for the articulation of Maaori women’s aspirations and concerns. Drawing on Maaori women’s biographical koorero from four plays performed between 1986 and 1997, the essay presents a kind of “vocal kaleidoscope.” This vocal kaleidoscope reflects the complexities of balancing a contemporary existence with a traditional past. Rena Owen’s Te Awa I Tahuti, Riwia Brown’s Roimata, Renee’s Jeannie Once, and Briar Grace-Smith’s Ngaa Pou Waahine render audible gender and cultural identity issues pertinent to Maaori women. Pieced together, the reflective voices of these waahine koorero help locate points of …

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas Mar 2007

Representation Of Latino Culture In Introductory High School Textbooks, Patricia Thomas

Dimensions

As Latinos continue to be the fastest growing racial minority group in the U.S., the many dimensions of Latino culture have become increasingly important as elements of the Spanish language curriculum. This study focuses on textbooks as a major resource in cultural instruction, examining how Latinos and Latino culture are represented in Spanish textbooks at the introductory level. In general, the Latino presence in the U.S. is presented as an important part of the Spanishspeaking world. Historical context regarding how specific Latino communities were established is sometimes limited, as is discussion of certain current economic, political, and identity issues. A …

Integrating Stories With Multimedia Into The French Language Classroom, Marat Sanatullov, Elvira Sanatullova-Allison

Dimensions

Standards, proficiency, theory and research, and instructional approaches can guide teachers in integrating stories with multimedia in a foreign language classroom, as the authors demonstrate through the adaptation of a Haitian folk story for novice and intermediate learners of French. The article also gives practical recommendations for foreign language teachers to help them effectively integrate stories with multimedia in their classrooms and introduces the PEPPrepare, Explore, and Practice–model, which defines the essential steps of the use of stories with multimedia.

Pele, Hi‘Iaka, And Haumea: Women And Power In Two Hawaiian Mo‘Olelo, Noenoe Silva

Pacific Studies

This paper examines two Hawaiian mo‘olelo published in Hawaiian in 1861 and 1905 for representations of powerful female characters. These characters are seen to be human, divine, and parts of the landscape all at once. The paper argues that the elaborated stories as literature have been lost in the processes of colonialism that eroded and nearly eradicated the Hawaiian language; the stories have been replaced with caricatures, distorted translations, and other simulacra that work to reinforce stereotypes about Hawaiians. A successful revitalization of the Hawaiian language that allowed most people to be able to read this literature would work as …

Reforming Innercity Bus Transportation In A Developing Country: A Passenger-Driven Model, Syed Saad Andaleeb, Mahmudul Haq, Rubina I. Ahmed Mar 2007

Reforming Innercity Bus Transportation In A Developing Country: A Passenger-Driven Model, Syed Saad Andaleeb, Mahmudul Haq, Rubina I. Ahmed

Journal of Public Transportation

The transportation system in Dhaka City, Bangladesh, requires significant improvements. The shortage of motorized vehicles and the excessive number of nonmotorized vehicles on the city’s streets have been the cause of unbearable traffic congestion, leading to negative externalities such as productivity loss, increase in stress levels, and adverse health effects from pollution. In a city inhabited by more than 12 million people, predominantly representing the middle- and lower-middle class, a well-organized low-cost bus transportation system is yet to emerge to resolve the city’s transportation problems. This study explores ways of improving bus transportation services in Dhaka. Eight factors were identified …

Teaching “Straight” Gay And Lesbian History, Nancy Unger Mar 2007

Teaching “Straight” Gay And Lesbian History, Nancy Unger

History

The importance of offering a lesbian and gay American history course was initially impressed upon me in 1986. A newly minted Ph.D., I was teaching my very first class: a U.S. history survey at San Francisco State University (sfsu). The course required each student to review a book of his or her choice on any topic in U.S. history. One student chose John D’Emilio’s Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities: The Making of a Homosexual Minority in the United States, 1940–1970 from my list of suggested titles and wrote a thoughtful, enthusiastic review.1 At the bottom of the review was a handwritten …

Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was an online collection of 105 years' worth of association publications. But a team of Georgia librarians had the stamina for a marathon project that lasted 2 years. Members even built their own digital library system along the way, and so far, the finished site has logged more than 65,000 unique visits.

Landscape Context Outweighs Local Habitat Quality In Its Effects On Herbivore Dispersal And Distribution, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, Bryan J. Anderson, Alyssa S. Hakes, Heather B. Jackson, S. Elizabeth Jackson, James T. Cronin Mar 2007

Landscape Context Outweighs Local Habitat Quality In Its Effects On Herbivore Dispersal And Distribution, Kyle J. Haynes, Forrest P. Dillemuth, Bryan J. Anderson, Alyssa S. Hakes, Heather B. Jackson, S. Elizabeth Jackson, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Past studies with spatially structured herbivore populations have emphasized the primacy of intrinsic factors (e.g., patch quality), patch geometry (e.g., patch size and isolation), and more recently landscape context (e.g., matrix composition) in affecting local population abundance and dispersal rate. However, few studies have examined the relative importance of each factor, or how they might interact to affect herbivore abundance or dispersal. Here, we performed a factorial field experiment to examine the independent and interactive effects of patch quality (plant biomass, leaf protein, leaf phenolics) and matrix composition [mudflat or non-host grass (Bromus inermis)] on planthopper (Prokelisia crocea) emigration from …

A Mobile Element-Based Evolutionary History Of Guenons (Tribe Cercopithecini), Jinchuan Xing, Hui Wang, Yuhua Zhang, David A. Ray, Anthony J. Tosi, Todd R. Disotell, Mark A. Batzer Mar 2007

A Mobile Element-Based Evolutionary History Of Guenons (Tribe Cercopithecini), Jinchuan Xing, Hui Wang, Yuhua Zhang, David A. Ray, Anthony J. Tosi, Todd R. Disotell, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background: Guenons (tribe Cercopithecini) are a species-rich group of primates that have attracted considerable attention from both primatologists and evolutionary biologists. The complex speciation pattern has made the elucidation of their relationships a challenging task, and many questions remain unanswered. SINEs are a class of non-autonomous mobile elements and are essentially homoplasy-free characters with known ancestral states, making them useful genetic markers for phylogenetic studies. Results: We identified 151 novel Alu insertion loci from 11 species of tribe Cercopithecini, and used these insertions and 17 previously reported loci to infer a phylogenetic tree of the tribe Cercopithecini. Our results robustly …

Competition After Unbundling: Entry, Industry Structure, And Convergence, George S. Ford, Thomas M. Koutsky, Lawrence J. Spiwak

Federal Communications Law Journal

In the last few years, U.S. telecoms policy has shifted from encouraging the sharing of existing networks to facilitating the deployment of advanced communications networks. Given the large capital expenditures required for these networks, there can be only a few of such networks. In light of the natural forces that limit the number of facilities-based suppliers, it is vital for policymakers to investigate and implement rules that make markets more conducive to facilities-based entry and eliminate any existing rules that discourage deployment. The purpose of this Article is to provide a simple conceptual framework to evaluate the effect of particular …

A 21st Century Approach To Integrating Culture And Communication, Rosalie M. Cheatham Mar 2007

A 21st Century Approach To Integrating Culture And Communication, Rosalie M. Cheatham

Dimensions

This article presents an approach to revising classroom instruction in order to integrate the second language standards of culture and communication throughout the second language program. It is designed to assure that today’s students are able not only to survive linguistically in the target culture but also to develop cultural awareness and to appreciate its importance for them as world citizens. Guided by some of the principles of the theoretical framework of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Integrated Performance Assessment (Glisan, Adair-Hauck, Koda, Sandrock, &Swender, 2003), this approach enables students to acquire culturally relevant knowledge …

Evaluating Water Stress Controls On Primary Production In Biogeochemical And Remote Sensing Based Models, Qiaozhen Mu, Maosheng Zhao, Faith Ann Heinsch, Mingliang Liu, Hanqin Tian, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Water stress is one of the most important limiting factors controlling terrestrial primary production, and the performance of a primary production model is largely determined by its capacity to capture environmental water stress. The algorithm that generates the global near-real-time MODIS GPP/NPP products (MOD17) uses VPD (vapor pressure deficit) alone to estimate the environmental water stress. This paper compares the water stress calculation in the MOD17 algorithm with results simulated using a process-based biogeochemical model (Biome-BGC) to evaluate the performance of the water stress determined using the MOD17 algorithm. The investigation study areas include China and the conterminous United States …

A Comparison Of The Universal Basic Education (Ube) Programme In Nigeria And The Grundskola Of Sweden, Esther A. Oduolowu

Essays in Education

The Universal Basic Education Programme in Nigeria and the “Grundskola” Education Programme of Sweden are situated within the large context of a global quest for Education for All (EFA). Both programmes have a fundamental principle in common, that is everybody must have access to equivalent education and both are comprehensive and co-educational. Consequently, this paper compared the UBE with the Grundskola by examining the similarities and differences, the unique features of each programme and the extent that the Nigeria UBE can benefit from the Sweden’s Grundskola proclaimed as one of the best primary education in the world. The paper discusses …

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Evolving research in Fort Resolution and the Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories, aims to improve understanding of how the natural ecosystem functions and responds to various environmental stressors, as well as to enhance the stewardship of natural resources and the capacity of local residents to respond to change. We seek to integrate approaches that span the natural and social sciences and traditional knowledge understandings of change, employing a research design developed in response to the concerns of a northern community. In doing so, we have strived for a research process that is collaborative, interdisciplinary, policy-oriented, and reflective of northern priorities. …
