School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This paper examines long-term eddy covariance data from 18 European and 17 North American and Asian forest, wetland, tundra, grassland, and cropland sites under nonwater- stressed conditions with an empirical rectangular hyperbolic light response model and a single layer two light-class carboxylase-based model. Relationships according to ecosystem functional type are demonstrated between empirical and physiological parameters, suggesting linkages between easily estimated parameters and those with greater potential for process interpretation. Relatively sparse documentation of leaf area index dynamics at flux tower sites is found to be a major difficulty in model inversion and flux interpretation. Therefore, a simplification of the …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Enzootic Raccoon Rabies Adjusted For Multiple Covariates, Sergio Recuenco, Millicent Eidson, Martin Kulldorff, Glen Johnson, Bryan Cherry

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Background: With the objective of identifying spatial and temporal patterns of enzootic raccoon variant rabies, a spatial scan statistic was utilized to search for significant terrestrial rabies clusters by year in New York State in 1997–2003. Cluster analyses were unadjusted for other factors, adjusted for covariates, and adjusted for covariates and large scale geographic variation (LSGV). Adjustments were intended to identify the unusual aggregations of cases given the expected distribution based on the observed locations.

Results: Statistically significant clusters were identified particularly in the Albany, Finger Lakes, and South Hudson areas. The clusters were generally persistent in the Albany area, …

The Geography Of Coordination: Dealing With Distance In R & D Work, John R. Fleming Apr 2007

The Geography Of Coordination: Dealing With Distance In R & D Work, John R. Fleming

Student Scholarship

This paper addresses how to coordinate multi-site work. It presents four types of models and then gives examples of the models. These models are: functional areas of expertise, product structure, process steps and customization. The paper looks into each of these four structures for organization and then discusses the benefits and drawbacks of each. Annotated bibliographies about team management from the Weatherhead School of Management Executive MBA Class of 2007.

A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker Apr 2007

A History Of Urban Coyote Problems, Robert M. Timm, Rex O. Baker

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

We summarize previously published information on coyote attacks on humans in North America. This problem has developed primarily in urban and suburban areas of southern California since the early 1970s, and the frequency of attacks and other human safety incidents is increasing. Similar attacks are now known from at least 18 states in addition to California and from 4 Canadian provinces, with the majority of attacks occurring since the early 1990s. We review early explorers' and settlers' accounts of coyotes in the Los Angeles area, as well as development of coyote control programs during the 20th century. We also describe …

Shakespearean Spin-Offs: Mindless Entertainment Or Conversations With Critics, Amy Anderson Apr 2007

Shakespearean Spin-Offs: Mindless Entertainment Or Conversations With Critics, Amy Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Literature is always in a state of evolution. Words change; the way writers write changes. Even actual literary works transform. William Shakespeare manipulated numerous classic works of literature to make extraordinary dramas for both his lifetime and eras since. Much as Shakespeare adapted literature to suit his purposes, writers today are constantly utilizing story lines introduced by the bard over four-hundred years ago in various modern-day mediums. Shakespeare wrote most of his works for the entertainment of the masses; Shakespeare's works are adapted today for both entertainment and academic endeavors. Certainly, a Klingon (Star Trek) version of arguably …

Gumbo Flats And Slim Buttes: Visualizing The “West River” Region In Western South Dakota, Nathan B. Sanderson Apr 2007

Gumbo Flats And Slim Buttes: Visualizing The “West River” Region In Western South Dakota, Nathan B. Sanderson

James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities

When South Dakota and North Dakota became states in 1889, the powers that be split the old Dakota Territory lengthwise a few degrees south of the 46th parallel, creating two states that each spanned roughly 400 miles east to west, and about 230 miles north to south. The Missouri River ran through the central portion of both states, marking the approximate location of the 100th Meridian. Given the stark differences in annual moisture on either side of the Meridian and the inherent contrasts this discrepancy produces, perhaps these states should have been divided north to south instead.

In South Dakota, …

Predicting The Deforestation–Trend Under Different Carbon–Prices, Georg E. Kindermann, Michael Obersteiner, Ewald Rametsteiner, Ian Mccallcum

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Background: Global carbon stocks in forest biomass are decreasing by 1.1 Gt of carbon annually, owing to continued deforestation and forest degradation. Deforestation emissions are partly offset by forest expansion and increases in growing stock primarily in the extra-tropical north. Innovative financial mechanisms would be required to help reducing deforestation. Using a spatially explicit integrated biophysical and socio-economic land use model we estimated the impact of carbon price incentive schemes and payment modalities on deforestation. One payment modality is adding costs for carbon emission, the other is to pay incentives for keeping the forest carbon stock intact. Results: Baseline scenario …

Environmental Taxation And International Eco-Industries, Joan Canton Apr 2007

Environmental Taxation And International Eco-Industries, Joan Canton

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Environmental policies are discussed when two countries differ in their ability to abate pollution. Northern eco-industries (the industry supplying abatement activities) are more efficient than Southern ones. Segmented environmental markets and a Northern monopoly yield identical second-best taxes in both countries. When markets are global, Southern countries underestimate the market power of eco-industries. Introducing competition creates positive (resp. negative) rent-shifting distortions in South (resp. North). Cooperation could reduce Northern pollution but has ambiguous consequences in South.
