Religion And The Everyday Ritual Of Home Life: A Comparison Of Higher And Lower Family Functioning Groups, Rachel Wadsworth Loser
Religion And The Everyday Ritual Of Home Life: A Comparison Of Higher And Lower Family Functioning Groups, Rachel Wadsworth Loser
Theses and Dissertations
As scholarly interest in family religiosity has grown, scholars have called for a closer look at proximal measures of religiosity that are more connected to the individual and familial daily experience (Mahoney et al., 1999). The purpose of this paper is to explore in detail how religion and family religious rituals relate to, interface with, and affect the day-to-day activity of family life. It includes qualitative analysis of interviews with highly religious parents and children in 67 families that belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Grounded theory was employed to analyze the data and a conceptual …

On the inspection of the incident site on the 17th April 2007 the following observation was established: The sub-munition was located on the surface, in a declared, sub-surface cleared area. The sub-munition was removed from a mound of soil that had been excavated from an area adjacent to a road, during excavation of a retaining wall and then the sub-munition was placed in this area. The [Demining group] completion documents indicated the area was sub-surface cleared, however where the clearance bordered the road and where overhead power lines were present the area was only surface cleared due to interference when …

The Regional Economy Of Southeast Alaska, Steve Colt, Ginny Fay, Darcy Dugan
The Regional Economy Of Southeast Alaska, Steve Colt, Ginny Fay, Darcy Dugan
ISER Reports
Southeast Alaska consists of all boroughs and census areas including and east of the Yakutat Borough. (An Alaska borough or census area is the geographic equivalent of a county in the lower 48 states.) The eight boroughs and census areas are listed in Table 1. The “Southeast Region” is one of six longstanding labor market regions defined by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Following numerous other authors, we will refer to the Juneau City and Borough as “Juneau” and to the remaining seven census areas as “rural Southeast” or “rural Southeast Alaska.” This report provides a broad …
How The Devils Went Deaf: Ethnomycology, Cuisine, And Perception Of Landscape In The Russian North, Sveta Yamin-Pasternak
How The Devils Went Deaf: Ethnomycology, Cuisine, And Perception Of Landscape In The Russian North, Sveta Yamin-Pasternak
Anthropology
Arctic tundra is rich mushroom country and a number of high latitude fungi species can potentially be used as food. Different regions often play host to many of the same or similar mushroom varieties. Yet, people's attitudes toward the same mushrooms---and mushrooms in general---vary widely both in temporal and geographical senses. The given work presents a study in ethnomycology---a field of inquiry concerned with human beliefs and practices associated with mushrooms, carried out in the Bering Strait area of Chukotka, Russia. Once avoided by the Native people living on the Russian and American sides of the Bering Strait, wild mushrooms …

Weapon, Toy, Or Art? The Eskimo Yo-Yo As A Commodified Artic Bola And Marker Of Cultural Identity, Alysa J. Klistoff
Anthropology
The Eskimo yo-yo is a popular tourist art found in gift shops across Alaska. It is made in a variety of shapes, ranging from seals and dolls, to mukluks and simple balls. Many are plainly decorated; others display elaborate decorations, fine beadwork, and intricate details. Some shops carry only Native-made pieces, while others carry imitation pieces made in China. Though a true history of the Eskimo yo-yo remains "shrouded in mystery" (Ray 1977), Eskimos maintain that this game originated as an important and widely used hunting tool made simply with sinew and bones---the bola. The gun has replaced the bola …
Reproductive Potential Of Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) In Alaska, Olav Aleksander Ormseth
Reproductive Potential Of Pacific Cod (Gadus Macrocephalus) In Alaska, Olav Aleksander Ormseth
Marine Biology
The reproductive potential of female fishes, which results from the number of eggs they produce and the quality of individual eggs, is a critical factor in fisheries biology. Reproductive potential is important to individuals because maternal fitness is the product of the number of offspring produced and how many offspring survive. The growth rate of populations and their capacity for supporting commercial fisheries also depend on the number of viable offspring that females produce. I studied the reproductive potential of female Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) in the North Pacific Ocean. Pacific cod is an important ecological and economic resource, yet …
The Extent Of Homelessness In The Kenai Peninsula Borough, Meghan Wilson, Marie Lowe
The Extent Of Homelessness In The Kenai Peninsula Borough, Meghan Wilson, Marie Lowe
ISER Reports
In 2007, Love INC asked the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) to conduct a study investigating the characteristics of the homeless population within the boundaries of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Love INC is currently in the pre-development phase of creating a transitional housing facility on the Kenai Peninsula. ISER conducted phone interviews with relevant agencies serving the Kenai’s homeless population. These interviews yielded demographic information on the homeless population and provided both the current housing status of Kenai homeless and reasons for homelessness today. Men, women, and youth utilize homeless services on the Kenai Peninsula; they are between …
Copper River Salmon Habitat Management Study, Marie Lowe
Copper River Salmon Habitat Management Study, Marie Lowe
ISER Reports
In 2006, Ecotrust commissioned the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage to conduct a study on land managers’ perceptions of salmon habitat management in the Copper River Watershed (CRW). ISER interviewed 20 managers from 10 organizations representing Federal agencies (BLM, USACE, USFS, USFWS), State of Alaska agencies (ADFG, DEC, DNR) and Alaska Native Corporations (AHTNA, EYAK). The study was conducted to examine managers’ perceptions about the current status of watershed management with regard to health of salmon populations. By interviewing resource managers, the research was conducted to determine threats to salmon habitat and …

Mass Balances And Dynamic Changes Of The Bering, Malaspina, And Icy Bay Glacier Systems Of Alaska, United States, And Yukon, Canada, Reginald R. Muskett
Geosciences
The Bering and the Malaspina Glacier systems of south-central Alaska, U.S.A., and southwest Yukon Territory, Canada, in the Saint Elias Mountains constitute the two largest temperate surge-type piedmont glaciers on Earth. This is largest region of glaciers and icefields in continental North America. Determining and understanding the causes of wastage of these two glaciers is important to understanding the linkages of glacier mass balance to climate change, glacier dynamics, and the contributions of the glaciers of northwestern North America to rising sea level. Presented are the first detailed estimate of the net mass balances of the Bering and Malaspina Glacier …
Numerical Modeling Of Seasonally Freezing Ground And Permafrost, Dmitry J. Nicolsky
Numerical Modeling Of Seasonally Freezing Ground And Permafrost, Dmitry J. Nicolsky
Geosciences
This thesis represents a collection of papers on numerical modeling of permafrost and seasonally freezing ground dynamics. An important problem in numerical modeling of temperature dynamics in permafrost and seasonally freezing ground is related to parametrization of already existing models. In this thesis, a variation data assimilation technique is presented to find soil properties by minimizing the discrepancy between in-situ measured temperatures and those computed by the models. The iterative minimization starts from an initial approximation of the soil properties that are found by solving a sequence of simple subproblems. In order to compute the discrepancy, the temperature dynamics is …

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07
French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07
Honors Projects
Anna Karenina uses Russian identities and Russian language in opposition to European culture and French language to highlight the superficiality ofthe Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century. In the context of the novel, honesty to oneself worth is the highest expression of being; unless one lives in truth, one cannot lay claim to a genuine existence. Culture and, more importantly, cultural identity provide this appraisal and affirmation of our own self-worth, as well as a framework in which to approach life.
