Danger Afoot: Sidewalks, Environmental Justice, And Pedestrian Safety In Pinellas County, Florida, Craig W. Harmak Apr 2007

Danger Afoot: Sidewalks, Environmental Justice, And Pedestrian Safety In Pinellas County, Florida, Craig W. Harmak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Though often taken for granted, few everyday activities involve so much genuine danger as the hazards associated with motor vehicles. Urban areas are built, modified, and/or deconstructed with motoring in mind. Also true is that few are at as much risk, as are those pedestrians who dare to cross paths with motor vehicles. Unfortunately, all too often, pedestrians are casualties of encounters with the ubiquitous automobile. The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has recently been deemed, by one study, to be the nation's second most dangerous MSA for pedestrians. Using information on pedestrian/motor vehicle accident sites, sidewalk location …

Hikorocodium Endo Is Not An Alga But An Inozoid Sponge, J. Keith Rigby, Baba Senowbari-Daryan

Faculty Publications

The genus Hikorocodium, with the type species Hikorocodium elegantae from the Permian of Japan, was described originally as a codiacean alga by Endo. It is not a codiacean alga but an inozoid sponge of the family Preperonidellidae. Several fossils described later by Endo and other authors as H. elegantae should be assigned to different inozoid sponge taxa. Specimens of H. fertiliz, described by Endo from the Jurassic of Japan, are also sponge fragments. The taxonomic positions of H. transversum Endo and H. kuramotoi Nakamura, as sponges or

Hurricane Forecasting, Warning And Response Systems: A Lake Wales Public Perception Study, April E. Raulerson Apr 2007

Hurricane Forecasting, Warning And Response Systems: A Lake Wales Public Perception Study, April E. Raulerson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the public perception of hurricane forecasting and warning systems with a view to improving response activities. The hazard literature shows that the effectiveness of such systems is contingent upon on the smooth operation of all components of the system and that warning recipients fully understand the implications of the warning message by taking appropriate action. It is argued that public perception of warning systems will vary depending on various socio-demographic factors, such as age, gender, level of education, socioeconomic status and area, factors that will ultimately influence overall effectiveness. To test this, a questionnaire survey was undertaken …

The Rise Of Clostridium Difficile In Florida, Owen Bendixsen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clostridium difficile, a bacterium that causes diarrhea in hospitalized patients, is on the rise in the United States as well as in other countries. This study was done to determine the extent of the problem in Florida's acute care hospitals. The Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) provided data for patients discharged from Florida's acute care hospitals for the years 1998 through 2004.

This study will focus on changes in the prevalence of Clostridium difficile associated disease (CDAD) over time. The mortality and morbidity of patients that have CDAD will also be examined to show if the disease is increasing …

Competition And Collaboration: The Spirit Of St. Louis, Laura A. Dummit, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to St. Louis, Missouri, on April 3-5, 2007, to consider the relationships between hospitals and physicians—and the degree of alignment in their financial, organizational, and policy goals—as a foundation for a new round of discussions on how to reform the health care system. St. Louis offered an interesting venue for these investigations because it is home to two major medical schools, three large hospital systems, and a physician community dominated by small practices. Site visit participants were able to converse with community, business, medical school, hospital, and physician leaders to learn …

Searching For The Terrestrial Paleocene/Eocene Boundary At The Canadian High Arctic: A Carbon Isotope Study, Monica Kraus Apr 2007

Searching For The Terrestrial Paleocene/Eocene Boundary At The Canadian High Arctic: A Carbon Isotope Study, Monica Kraus

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

The Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) is a rare climatic event in the history of the Earth, which marks the abrupt transition from the Paleocene to Eocene of the Cenozoic era with a rapid increase in global surface temperatures of up to 5-8&#;C. The PETM marks the warmest climates in the past 65 million years and a world-wide negative excursion of stable carbon isotopes (δ13C). To determine the location of the Paleocene-Eocene (P/E) boundary in high-latitudinal non-marine strata and to examine the magnitude of vegetation and climatic change during the warming period, the bulk carbon isotope ratios were measured in …

Ecosystem Services In The Klamath Basin: Battlefield Casualties Or The Future?, A. Dan Tarlock Apr 2007

Ecosystem Services In The Klamath Basin: Battlefield Casualties Or The Future?, A. Dan Tarlock

All Faculty Scholarship

The Upper Klamath Basin in southern Oregon and northern California has long been characterized by its aridity, remoteness from population centers, and short growing season. Today, the entire Klamath Basin is known for the intensity and bitterness of the competing demands for its limited, dependable water supplies. The Upper Basin irrigation community's entrenched water entitlements, enjoyed undisturbed for a century, are being challenged by Indian tribes, government and non-governmental entities acting to enforce the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and Lower Basin fishing communities. Over a century of intensive upstream irrigation diversions and dams has produced a highly stressed ecosystem from …

Those concerned with the health of coastal and ocean resources increasingly need to understand the socio-economic context in which changes are occurring. The market data of the National Ocean Economics …

Immigrant-Trade Links, Transplanted Home Bias And Network Effects, Roger White Apr 2007

Immigrant-Trade Links, Transplanted Home Bias And Network Effects, Roger White

Economics

Macro-level data for the US and 73 trading partners spanning the years 1980 to 2001 is used with a gravity specification to investigate the influence of immigration on bilateral trade. Prior research has identified immigrant stocks as a significant determinant of trade; however, this study indicates that the US immigrant-trade link is driven by immigration from relatively low income countries. A 10% increase in the immigrant stock is found to generate respectively 4.7 and 1.5% increases in domestic imports from and exports to the typical low income home country. The observed link is decomposed into two hypothesized channels – network …

Secondary Markets, Risk, And Access To Credit Evidence From The Mortgage Market, Stuart S. Rosenthal, Stuart A. Gabriel Apr 2007

Secondary Markets, Risk, And Access To Credit Evidence From The Mortgage Market, Stuart S. Rosenthal, Stuart A. Gabriel

Economics - All Scholarship

Secondary markets for credit are widely believed to improve efficiency and increase access to credit. In part, this is because of their greater ability to manage risk. However, the degree to which secondary markets expand access to credit is virtually unknown. Using the mortgage market as an example, we begin to fill that gap. Our conceptual model suggests that secondary credit markets have potentially ambiguous effects on interest rates, but unambiguous positive effects on the number of loans issued. We focus our empirical analysis on the latter using 1992-2004 HMDA files for conventional, conforming, home purchase loans in conjunction with …
