A Potential Pollen Proxy For Enso Derived From The Sajama Ice Core, Kam-Biu Liu, Carl A. Reese, Lonnie G. Thompson May 2007

A Potential Pollen Proxy For Enso Derived From The Sajama Ice Core, Kam-Biu Liu, Carl A. Reese, Lonnie G. Thompson

Faculty Publications

An annually resolved pollen record spanning a 39-year period ( 1958 - 1996) from the Sajama Ice Cap, located on the western Bolivian Altiplano, reveals significant interannual variations in both pollen concentration and composition. The pollen assemblages within the annual layers are dominated by typical Altiplano taxa, especially Poaceae and Asteraceae. On an annual basis the pollen concentrations are strongly negatively correlated (Pearson's r = - 0.716) with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Studies from Sajama and other tropical ice caps have shown that during El Nino years, the weather on the Altiplano is decidedly warmer and drier, which enhances …

An Evaluation Of How Elementary School Teachers Perceive Library Media Specialists' Responsibilities In Gloucester County, New Jersey, Kathleen M. Farrington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not teachers expected a higher level of responsibility from the library media specialist in schools that employed at least one full-time library media specialist (n=47). Additionally, it investigated whether or not those teachers had a more in-depth understanding or acceptance of the roles of the library media specialist. Specifically it addressed the following research questions: 1.) What roles and responsibilities of the library media specialist did classroom teachers deem important? 2.) Was there a difference in teacher understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the library media specialist between schools …

Information Literacy At Augustana: A Programmatic Approach, Nancy E. Goebel, Paul J. Neff

Communications in Information Literacy

Information literacy programs, and the factors that influence their development and structure, can vary significantly from institution to institution. Credit-bearing discipline-specific information literacy courses are a rare and valuable component of an undergraduate educational experience and form the basis of Augustana's information literacy program. This article provides an overview of the development, implementation, successes, and drawbacks of the credit-bearing discipline-specific information literacy courses at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta (Camrose, Alberta, Canada). Additional program components including Augustana's annual information literacy workshop, information literacy awards, information literacy DVD, and marketing/branding, are discussed.

Latitudinal Analysis Of Twilight Hydroxyl Airglow, Willie Harrison, Doran Baker May 2007

Latitudinal Analysis Of Twilight Hydroxyl Airglow, Willie Harrison, Doran Baker

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Latitudinal characterizations of twilight mesospheric hydroxyl volume emission rate (VER) from year 2002 to 2005, are made possible using the SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) sensor, a ten-channel infrared radiometer onboard NASA’s TIMED (Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) satellite. Implementation of a binning algorithm over time and geography provides global twilight characteristics from SABER radiometric channel 9 data, centered at ¸ = 1.64 ¹m for the OH (5,3) and OH (4,2) Meinel airglow band infrared emissions, and SABER radiometric channel 8 data, centered at ¸ = 2.06 ¹m for the OH (9,7) and OH (8,6) …

What Distinguishes Emas Participants? An Exploration Of Company Characteristics, Roeland Bracke, Tom Verbeke , Veerle Dejonckheere May 2007

What Distinguishes Emas Participants? An Exploration Of Company Characteristics, Roeland Bracke, Tom Verbeke , Veerle Dejonckheere

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Empirical research on the characteristics of environmentally responsive companies has focussed almost exclusively on US and Japanese firms. For Europe, which is commonly considered as the greenest of the three major developed economic markets, similar research is lacking. This paper seeks to fill this gap by empirically investigating the business and financial characteristics, stakeholder pressure and public policies distinguishing companies that have implemented the European Eco-Management and Audit System (EMAS) and those that have not using a unique firm-level dataset of European publicly quoted companies. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First of all, the decision to implement EMAS …

Out Of The Bottle: The Genie Of Direct Democracy, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The initiative process is out of the bottle, and it is unlikely citizens will try to recork their genie anytime soon. While the process has proven to be subject to the same corrupting influences of money and special interests as the legislative process, citizen voters are motivated to begin using the initiative itself to regain its integrity.
