Providing Lumber For The ‘Sawed’ House: The Repeal Of The Southern Homestead Act And Euro-American Settlement Of The Plains, David Nesheim May 2007

Providing Lumber For The ‘Sawed’ House: The Repeal Of The Southern Homestead Act And Euro-American Settlement Of The Plains, David Nesheim

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Within five years, two separate homestead acts became law in the United States. Congress passed the first during the Civil War, which applied to public domain lands primarily in the western half of the U.S. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed settlers to claim 160 acres of public domain and receive title after a period of residence and “improvement.” It also featured other methods to gain title, including cash purchase. Following the war, the Southern Homestead Act became law in 1866. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi collectively held nearly 47,000,000 acres open to claim as a result, although in …

Technology Bridge To Employment: A Community Technology Initiative, Rosalind Bain May 2007

Technology Bridge To Employment: A Community Technology Initiative, Rosalind Bain

Theses

As the economic gap continues to widen between the rich and poor, we will continue to see people (primarily the poor) experiencing a number of social problems, including being cut off from accessing modern technology. In many small cities and rural areas throughout the United States, there is sufficient evidence that shows poor people are not as connected to or knowledgeable about modern technological advances and their application within the wider society. This puts them at a disadvantage and hinders their chances for both professional and economic growth. The author involved in the capstone served as the volunteer lead instructor …

Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston May 2007

Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Pleistocene land bridge islands in the Aegean Sea make an ideal natural experimental system for testing how island age, area and isolation affect genetic variation. My research focuses on the population genetics of the Aegean wall lizard Podarcis erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), which because of its wide distribution, and poor dispersal abilities is a sensitive indicator of fragmentation history. I predict that genetic diversity will be positively correlated with island area and negatively correlated with age. I also predict that island characteristics, host genetic variability or grazing may impact parasite prevalence. Findings showed that larger islands maintained more genetic diversity …

Smart Growth Initiatives And Their Ability To Enhance The National Security Of The U.S., Donald Letterle May 2007

Smart Growth Initiatives And Their Ability To Enhance The National Security Of The U.S., Donald Letterle

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The beginning of the 21st Century has presented the United States with many new challenges. One of the most significant challenges we face are domestic and foreign security issues. Though traditionally the U.S. has relied on military and law enforcement agencies to address security related matters, in the wake of new pressing concerns such as terrorism, foreign fuel reliance and environmental degradation it has become apparent that other alternatives must be examined. One such alternative is the implementation of smart growth initiatives into current urban and sub-urban planning processes. The implementation of these initiatives into existing and new development will …

Planning For Chaos: Cluster Strategies Of Economic Development, Lisa Brosnan May 2007

Planning For Chaos: Cluster Strategies Of Economic Development, Lisa Brosnan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With this thesis I will attempt to demonstrate the value of using chaos theory as a framework for understanding the emergence and development of clusters as a strategy for economic development. The application of the principles of chaos theory will be used to judge the relative success of specific clusters through a case study approach and historical analysis to determine the change agents and other significant factors influential to the growth of economic clusters. Because clusters are turbulent, non-linear systems that are sensitive to endogenous and exogenous triggers, chaos theory may provide the conceptual foundation appropriate to the study of …

A Study Of Arkansas' Implementation Of An Elementary Art Program, Angela Harris May 2007

A Study Of Arkansas' Implementation Of An Elementary Art Program, Angela Harris

Education

The purpose of this case study was to describe how Arkansas was able to mandate and implement their elementary art education program, as well as the possibility of using Arkansas' program as a model for implementing art education at the elementary level in schools in other states. Based on what I discovered through interviews and publicly available documents, Arkansas' program was mandated and designed in such a manner that other states could modify the process used to create an elementary art program to fit their own individual needs. The findings from this study of the elementary art program in Arkansas …

Exchange And Interaction In Western Aleutian Prehistory: The Efficacy Of Geochemical Analysis Of Lithic Raw Material Procurement On Amchitka Island, Nicholas P. Jew May 2007

Exchange And Interaction In Western Aleutian Prehistory: The Efficacy Of Geochemical Analysis Of Lithic Raw Material Procurement On Amchitka Island, Nicholas P. Jew

Anthropology

There are two main objectives of this thesis; the first is to evaluate the efficacy of geochemical techniques for the identification of lithic raw materials used to make stone tools in the Aleutian Islands. The second objective is to use the data set acquired from the analytical methods to generate hypotheses pertaining to exchange and interaction on Amchitka Island. Looking at Amchitka's geology using x-ray fluorescence will provide the basis for examining the elemental characterization for identification of basalt materials. From this analysis, I compared the elemental concentration of basalt artifacts between six archaeological sites found on Amchitka. Through the …

Transport Of Dungeness Crab (Cancer Magister) Megalopae Into Glacier Bay, Alaska, Heidi L. Herter May 2007

Transport Of Dungeness Crab (Cancer Magister) Megalopae Into Glacier Bay, Alaska, Heidi L. Herter

Fisheries

Areas of high Cancer magister larval recruitment and transport mechanisms were identified in the lower portion of Glacier Bay, Alaska. Megalopae were collected at three sites in 2004 and 2005 using light traps positioned within 1 m of the surface and bottom at 10 m depth. Surface traps captured 96.5 - 99.4 % of megalopae collected. Megalopae abundances were highly pulsed and decreased with increasing distance from the mouth of Glacier Bay. Spatial variation was similar between years with significant differences among all sites in 2005. Half of the total annual megalopae supply occurred over just two nights in September …

The Kandik Map: Cultural Exchange Along The Yukon River, Linda R. Johnson May 2007

The Kandik Map: Cultural Exchange Along The Yukon River, Linda R. Johnson

Arctic and Northern Studies

The Kandik Map drawn in 1880 by Yukon Indian Paul Kandik and annotated by French Canadian fur trader François Mercier and U.S. Census Agent Ivan Petroff is a unique record in the documentary history of Northwestern North America. It traces the Yukon, Tanana, and Kuskokwim Rivers from their headwaters to the Pacific, showing trading posts, trails, and place names in several Athabascan languages, as well as French and English. As one of the oldest maps of the Alaska-Yukon borderlands it documents indigenous knowledge and the dynamic cultural exchange between Native residents and non-native newcomers along the Yukon River prior to …

Using Gis-Based Methods Of Multicriteria Analysis To Construct Socio-Economic Deprivation Indices, Nathaniel Bell, Nadine Schuurman, Michael V. Hayes May 2007

Using Gis-Based Methods Of Multicriteria Analysis To Construct Socio-Economic Deprivation Indices, Nathaniel Bell, Nadine Schuurman, Michael V. Hayes

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Over the past several decades researchers have produced substantial evidence of a social gradient in a variety of health outcomes, rising from systematic differences in income, education, employment conditions, and family dynamics within the population. Social gradients in health are measured using deprivation indices, which are typically constructed from aggregated socio-economic data taken from the national census--a technique which dates back at least until the early 1970's. The primary method of index construction over the last decade has been a Principal Component Analysis. Seldom are the indices constructed from survey-based data sources due to the inherent difficulty in validating …
