Scholarship In Action And The Expansive Mission Of Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Jan 2007

Scholarship In Action And The Expansive Mission Of Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Syracuse is a place for talent, desire, and opportunity to flourish, and that is what is at the heart of “Scholarship in Action”--the vision and agenda that emerged from our university and community-wide exploration of the Soul of Syracuse three years ago. As a concept and as a program, it is already giving us a high profile in the national search for ways higher education can address the accelerating changes in knowledge and technology and the seriousness of the challenges ahead for our society and our world.2 It is also the basis for our ambitious fundraising campaign, which is off …

Natural River Restoration In Urban Ecology: The Bronx River, Samuel P. Loor Jan 2007

Natural River Restoration In Urban Ecology: The Bronx River, Samuel P. Loor

Student Theses 2001-2013

Environmental science is the systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. A relatively new field, environmental science is highly interdisciplinary, integrating natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities in a broad, holistic study of the world around us. In contrast to more theoretical disciplines, environmental science is mission-oriented. That is, it seeks new, valid, contextual knowledge about the natural world and our impacts on it, but obtaining this information creates a responsibility to get involved in trying something about the problems we have created i.e. environmental science is an applied science. For this study the environment that …

Imagining America; Imagining Universities: Who And What?, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

We have come together to collaborate on our campuses and in our communities on our common dreams of democracy and social justice. The region in which we meet has a rich history of passionate efforts to create and enlarge democracy. The Syracuse area was a station on the Underground Railroad, a seedbed for abolition, and the cockpit of the struggle for the rights of women.

Title Vi And The Warren County Protests, Bradford Mank Jan 2007

Title Vi And The Warren County Protests, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

One part of the 1982 civil rights struggle against building a Polychlorinated Biphenyls ("PCB") landfill in Warren County, North Carolina, was a suit by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ("NAACP") under Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Although the suit was unsuccessful, the Warren County protests led to a 1983 General Accounting Office study and a 1987 United Church of Christ's Commission on Racial Justice (CRJ) study, both of which found that hazardous waste facilities were more likely to be located in minority communities. The Warren County protests and the two studies helped build …

Are Public Facilities Different From Private Ones?: Adopting A New Standard Of Review For The Dormant Commerce Clause, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

On September 26, 2006, the Supreme Court granted certiorari in United Haulers Association Inc. v. Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority to decide the important issue of whether local governments may require that all waste in their jurisdiction be sent to a publicly-owned waste facility and thereby discriminate equally against both local and out-of-state private firms. The dormant Commerce Clause doctrine (DCCD) grants federal courts authority to invalidate state/local laws that discriminate against foreign goods/firms. The Court has adopted an overly broad per se test that invalidates any local law that theoretically discriminates against foreign firms, even if there is no …

Incorporating Multicultural Education Criteria Into Project Learning Tree Curricula, Alondra Marcela Blandon Jan 2007

Incorporating Multicultural Education Criteria Into Project Learning Tree Curricula, Alondra Marcela Blandon

Theses Digitization Project

Many environmental educators have realized that in order to effectively teach environmental sensitivity and literacy, they must approach their audience through a cultural context. Thus, environmental education lessons need to incorporate strategies used in multicultural education in order to be more culturally inclusive. This project includes the identification of multicultural education criteria and the application of these to three lessons from Project Learning Tree: PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide.
