Translating Ecocriticism: Dialoguing With Michel Serres, Stephanie Posthumus Apr 2007

Translating Ecocriticism: Dialoguing With Michel Serres, Stephanie Posthumus

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Since its humble beginnings in the Western United States, ecocriticism has grown under the banner of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment into an organization of over 1000 members with international affiliates in Australia-New Zealand, Canada, Europe, India, Japan, Koria and the UK. At first sight, it would seem that ecocriticism has achieved global status. But as Ursula Heise remarks in her assessment of ecocriticism, this process of globalisation has been mainly a process of becoming known internationally. In truth, ecocriticism has remained strongly rooted in Anglophone literary studies even as it has been exported to …

The Invention Of Traditional Knowledge, Madhavi Sunder Apr 2007

The Invention Of Traditional Knowledge, Madhavi Sunder

Law and Contemporary Problems

Sunder argues that the failure of intellectual property to recognize the contributions of traditional and natural sources cannot be rectified by mere payment and she posits a non-monetizable, non-utilitarian benefit in terms of worth or dignity in having one's contribution as the subject labelled of an intellectual property right. Foregrounding the important role of "raw materials" in the process of innovation, cultural environmentalism helped provide a theoretical and political basis for recognition and recompense for the purveyors of those raw materials-often indigenous peoples who have cultivated the earth's biodiversity and who hold "traditional knowledge" about that biodiversity. Moreover, focus on …

Naming Horror: Legal And Political Words For Mass Atrocities, Martha Minow

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

We live at a time when journalists coin phrases like ‘‘compassion fatigue’’ to describe failures of ordinary outrage and human action against massive killings, famines, and plagues. Our is a time when mass media and the Internet offer unprecedented connections among people—and when the top ‘‘hits’’ for Internet searches of ‘‘atrocity’’ and ‘‘nameless crime’’ each produce the Web sites of rock bands,1 even as the ongoing and vicious brutalities in the Darfur region of the Sudan escalate and Rwanda, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and still other regions stagger to recover from the legacies of their own mass atrocities. Other nations participate …

Higher Education On The World Stage Of Democracy: Overcoming An "Anemia Of Deeds", Nancy Cantor Mar 2007

Higher Education On The World Stage Of Democracy: Overcoming An "Anemia Of Deeds", Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

It is no exaggeration to state that higher education always has understood its most fundamental mission is to prepare people for their civic responsibilities. Even the first academies of ancient Greece were self-consciously convened for this purpose. So, when university leaders met last June under the auspices of the Council of Europe for the International Conference on the Responsibility of Higher Education for a Democratic Culture, it was not an abrupt departure from tradition, although many of the traditions of citizenship have changed significantly since the days of the Greek polis. Rather, that meeting in Strasbourg last June was a …

Agenda: The Climate Of Environmental Justice: Taking Stock, University Of Colorado Boulder. School Of Law

The Climate of Environmental Justice: Taking Stock (March 16-17)

On March 16-17, The Climate of Environmental Justice: Taking Stock conference gathered 125 academics and practitioners from around the country to consider the pressing issues facing low-income and/or communities of color that continue to be subjected to a disproportionate share of environmental maladies.

"Some people are more equal than others when it comes to bracing ourselves for the impacts of climate change," said conference organizer Professor Maxine Burkett. "Whether it's because poor folks lived in the lowest areas of New Orleans when Katrina floodwaters rushed in, or are less able to afford the cooling bill during increasingly frequent heat waves, …
